*Decisive* cake-eating! *Insightful* conversation! Nora, you're fired!

Rifter

Interesting advice from Duane. Isn't he basically saying to follow Lemuel's original plan that went awry and got him killed? To create a martyr champion to inspire the soud and other lower castes to rise up and take Alderode in full? Couldn't that catastrophically backfire for Sonorie? Wouldn't it raise Ssaelism as the dominant religion and make the nation rebuff Cresce even harder? Or would they sue for peace if they found Cresce had helped them do it, opposing religions be damned (pun intended haha)? Or is he saying to cause an Aldish civil war that maybe the Ssaelit win and they'll still hate Cresce, but be too weak to fight with them? Or they'll create a sort of new nation, effectively "destroying" Alderode themselves? and Am I making any sense? Forgive me I'm not the lore scholar some other readers are, so maybe I'm just confused by his words.

Kathleen Smith

I‘m curious which characters would be most horrified by this comic, if they could read it —Chief Engineer Nora here would probably have a lot to say about her portrayal! But I love how even the most repellant characters are true to themselves and have their own viewpoints—excellent writing. Also, sucks to be you, Nora!

Fitzy

"Prepare Mr Adelier for travel" - that doesn't seem like an order that involves dissolving Duane's soul and body back into the khert. I appreciate the Queen's ethos here - rejecting doomerism is hard, but it is necessary

Spider

Man no offense to Ufal, but what even was his JOB if Queen Sonorie can orate like that on the spot without a speech written ahead of time, semicolon abuse or otherwise??? Other than be a character we all root for.

Flyfly

It's Cresce, he needs to have a job! Even if Queen's fine without him.

PotentPinion

It's hot how you stood up to your sovereign just now. Hey everyone what's that over there

Flyfly

Duane, certified knower of what he knew, warns Nora about how it goes. Nice of him. Though, I suppose Nora's claim to know what she knows is better than his. Still, I suppose Queen is right. Sometimes it's right to doubt what you know you know. Sometimes, you can even be correct without being *right*.

3 gods? Is he suggesting that Ssael didn't kill Tirna? Is that lore known to the people?

SET

this segment is already begging for a re-read in whole once its completed!

Ashley

Ssaelism teaches that Ssael killed Yerta, Riv, and Baelar, but what happened to Tirna is a matter open to debate and interpretation. She may have fled the universe, gone to sleep, or even become a Counsellor of Ssael's. Scripture doesn't say. But it does say he stayed his hand because Tirna is the one that came to him in life and told him the gods were unworthy. She's probably also the one that helped him find them after death, maybe even told him how to destroy them, though Ssael leaves that part out.

Ashley

These are all fine and smart interpretations. I think front of mind is what he learned Lemuel was up to though, yeah. Duane believes his people are too proud to be led by Cresce, even if it's to their own benefit. Duane thinks they can fix Alderode themselves - they just need a champion. Or in more modern terms you and I might use, they need to organise. They need a plan. They need to be shaped into a force that can take on the overwhelming power of the state. Let my people save themselves, thinks Duane. Don't tell them how to do it. Just find some way to move them to proper and heroic action.

Ashley

It's not so very long. I didn't want it to go on forever and start to drag.

Reed Copperstrand

Division of labour, I'd say. Even if the Queen is a great orator, it would take time and energy to prepare her own speeches for all occasions. Also, Ufal was a liason to the nobles, as far as I remember. I'm confident that he had enough useful work to do.

SET

always leave them wanting more eh? (probably for the best tho Jivi is bound to suck all the air in the room with his acks and thats saying somthing with Duane on the slab) and is that cake eating girl the queens new mouse assistant, thats so fugged up

Jasus

Oh? So he does give good advice. I had half thought he would still remain nationalistic. Give people an alternative to the current state and they might take it.

Michael Stakely

Yes, Nora, I'm sure that trying to argue with Sonorie after directly disobeying her is definitely going to go well for you. Already to the point that the Queen thinks the person who openly admitted that restraints are the only thing preventing his tearing her throat out with his teeth is being the reasonable one here.

Khyrberos

FALSE. 10 more pages please

Khyrberos

Bro how am I just supposed to go to sleep now

Lulululu

My theory is that Ufal wrote this little speech in defense of the irrational on a notecard and tucked it into her tea-tray before she headed here. See how she turns her head downwards in panel 7 to peek at it?

TacNayn

Never really liked Sonorie as a person, but she managed to somewhat win me over with this speech.

vCalavera

Indeed. Its not that she can't do it. It's that her doing it to 27 different nobles and other stakeholders every single day (as a monarch probably can be required to) is a very bad use of her time. Hence, Ufal the Swole Verbose.

Rion Boom Crabhands Keon

Also it's so people can say "You heard Ufal speak? Yeah, he's good, but have you heard THE QUEEN HERSELF. *humble brag*"

jaaama

Well, obviously Sette would be the most horrified. She's the supposed main character but when has she last done anything epic?? Why has the woke mob censored or perhaps cancelled her?? She doesn't even need to read to know she's not here. She must be rattling in her cage so bad right now.

Karvil

Perhaps there's a bit of hope/possibility that a Ssaelit state that's gained safety through independence/dominance of Alderode & and awkward peace (or at least non-open hostility) with Cresce could be more secure in the knowledge that the gods are dead & everyone will know it in time without needing to try and posture & prove themselves, allowing relations to improve in time if the Gefendur (lead by Cresce) could accept that the Ssaelit will themselves learn their mistake in time.
