Duane's brain connected his present request with another time he felt completely abandoned and terrified - the beginning of his marriage and Mikaila's arrival. He had mad ideas of riding off adventuring with Lem then too, but of course that was just a daydream when he felt too in over his head.

But see how Lem tried to tame his hair for when he met Leysa? Part of me felt that panel was maybe a little too cute and incongruous for the heavy stuff going on but it was also Duane remembering what a good-intentioned goof Lem could be and how much he loves him so... that's what we went with.

Anyway, Lem sure did a 180 in response to that suggestion. You shoulda kept your rotten yawp shut, Duane.

Alas! It seems both Duane and I both will have to wait until he shambles his way to Alderode for the revelations we desire.

It's a testament to Ashley's skill as a writer that there are 3 completely different levels to this on a storytelling level. Firstly there is the obvious fact that this is a really, really sad moment for duane, and that it's going to be a defining moment for him and his relationship with his family and country going forward. Duane is going to learn firsthand the lesson quigley learned. that despite his loyalty and piety, he didnt actually matter much to his country even when alive. the second of course, is the sense of catharsis that a reader might feel after seeing months and months of duane being at his absolute worst and all in all being a terrible human being, this moment is a harsh punishment for that on a narrative level. And if im not very mistaken, the next page is going to continue that, as Lem spells out for him that this is nothing more than a raid, an attack to kill crescians behind the lines, men, women, children, which im gonna guess is going to be essential in Duane finally getting his head out of his rotting ass. And finally this is a sharp reminder that there are only 3 people in this world that will not only accept that Duane is who he claims he is, but also will accept him as who he is. Two of them see him as nothing more than a means to an end, and the third is a child who for all her flaws is the only person in the world who genuinely cares about him. Time will tell wheter he learns that lesson, or decide to go with titty bird rather than our little thief. In any case, great job setting up this moment.

"It's been seven years." One thing that I can never wrap my head around: Our second favourite villain Bastion Winalils has been around just seconds or minutes after the assault on Duane. And then we fast-forward a day or two, and he's suddenly in Lem's hands. How did that trade go? Did Bastion sell him to Lem? Or is Lem in deeper than we think?

I always wondered what details were withheld of Duane's resurrection. Particularly Lem's involvement. The fact that he was there when Duane awoke, and I do remember a line about "Leysa's shrieking," implying she saw him; how aware and or complicit are they in Duane's life after death? Also, man, I feel so bad for Duane. I've wondered too how much his son knows.
