too fuckin bad, dwayne. not your world, not your business 💅

Damn, everyone laughing… I don’t like what’s gonna happen to this woman.

Keep trying to make that look kill, Duane. I believe this is an interesting parenting duality here. Duane is pissed because Sette was hurt, but I think Nary is only pissed because his orders weren't followed. Even his quick 'sh' isn't him soothing Sette. He's just softly telling her to quit whining. Though I could be wrong.

holy shit why the fuck are they laughing?! Why’s he punishing the sister?? The fuck are Shartes on????

A lot of us thought Nary'd either do Cleet in himself, or make Sette do it. Getting a real look at Da's people management style here

Be interesting to see if Nary was telling this kid specifically to not mess with Sette, or to somehow subdue and kidnap her without hurting her? The former would be pretty standard crime boss stuff, second is "Nary-A-Care Frummagem is a land of contrasts".

[whistle] Gotta appreciate some lateral thinking in an on-the-villain-spectrum character. I don't want to ever meet Nary; I do find him consistently interesting! And the laughing crowd, damn... has anyone ever grown up in this side of town with half a chance at normal u.u

Panel 5 does redeem Nary quite a bit to me, given who he is and where he comes from; that wasn't necessary, and yet I feel it came truly. He's not at liberty to be kind to her, either - if he's clear he cares for her she becomes a weakness to be used against him. And he can't let her be too weak, or it'll be worse for her. But even in this moment, I genuinely feel he cares for her. In his own psychopathic way.

I know there is probably a real-world example of "what if an organized crime family ran a country" but I can't think of any rn. But this does seem in line with expectations

I love the detail of Nary picking up Settle by the back of the shirt—it also looks like a cat being carelessly picked up by the scruff of the neck. And! Sette's legs curl in, not unlike how a kitten's limbs curl in when being picked up by the scruff of the neck.

To me, Nary's "sh" gesture only has the thinnest veneer of fatherly comfort, and none of the substance. It's a great moment to me because it feels like it's meant to tug at readers' heartstrings, but in the same way that Lady Ilganyag looks like she's crying when she's really just washing her face with khertwater. It's intentionally misleading. It helps us understand why Sette adores this man, because it's a moment of... imitation tenderness, almost. From Sette's POV, this is a moment Da stood up for her. In this moment, in this memory, we stand in her shoes. I'm seeing a lot of readers grasping at this as a moment of genuine care and tenderness from Nary, because the bar for him is so low. When you're in a desert, the barest, bitter drops of water seem to be ambrosia. I ain't falling for it, though. I think that "sh" was just a way to tell Sette to stop blubbering and making whining noises so that Nary can get on with the business of punishing Cleet for his disobedience.

ya hurt one o' mine, I hurt one o' yours. Justice, such as it is.

Man, what a page, Duane's face in panel 2 is amazing. Also Nary is such a cool character. An awful bastard, but he owns the stage.

SET

Particularly nasty

Noxae

Duane's face! Also his closed fist in contrast to Nary's grabbing hand...

SET

whats up with that faded word ballown in the 6th panel next to narys head?

I kinda love gang crime politics! Can't have your authority disrespected, but also can't be too merciless, both lead to mutiny. If I had to guess, now Nary has to show the 'merciful' side, but in a way that won't lower his criminal authority. So he can't just submit to Cleet's pleading, that's showing that Cleet gets to cross Nary and then tell Nary what to do. But Nary can make like a really a shitty "counter offer" to Cleet. This way he can both show a bit of 'mercy' and have Cleet publicly submit to the boss. At least that's what I would expect from a crime lord... I wonder what he'll do!

While being "a lesson", this Nary's action reduces his functional, battle-ready (task-ready) minions by -2 instead of just -1 from having cleet primary arm disabled. Not very wise resource-wise & long-term wise. Unless this is also wrapped into misogyny and he doesn't consider the girl much of a resource, worth anything more than a tool to teach the boy & others. Also, I see other comments mentioning "hurt one of mine, i hurt one of yours" which also ties into thinking about this girl as cleet's "property" and not a stand-alone rogue.
