It's another 'Late Night Release' of the Harry Potter Review! This time covering what feels like almost a... contained story! XD

These chapters are SO GOOD! I can completely understand why they are among many people's favourites.. but can also understand why they are VERY frustrating with all the... Teenagerness! XD

Btw, I feel like I get the chapter numbers wrong through out most of this! Luckily I DID cover the right chapters! XD

I have to admit... the colour of Hermione's dress is not something I thought would be a major topic in this! But it is always so interesting to hear your passionate opinions on details like this! At one point I inadvertently see a pic of the Patil sister's outfits, and honestly... I realise the frustration!

Love reading your comments, guys! I 100% is my favourite part of doing these review, even if / especially when we disagree! So sorry if I seem to 'speed read' the last few, as I realised how little time we had before hitting the 'dreaded' 6 hour mark!

Enjoy~!

Snowspeeders and Space Shuttles

By the way, my comment about the ladle was a reference to A very Pottter musical as the ladle in the punch at the Yule Ball is the portkey that takes Harry and Cedric to the graveyard

VeggieGamer

AAAH!! I am so sorry, Snowspeeders!! I KNEW I had heard the reference but just couldn't place it!! My bad!

Wow your PC rendered in record time!

Hi Veggie! I'm glad I managed to sneak my comment in. It was really at the last minute :) Little dismayed that the updated version didn't make it but it's my own fault and I'm afraid it was too long anyway. (I promised I would write shorter comments - I really need to do better.) Severus is undoubtedly the most polarizing HP character, readers tend to either love him or hate him. Yes, there are people who are somewhere in the middle, but they are few and far in between, at least in my experience. The majority of the fandom is divided into Sev's fans and haters (for lack of a better word - I don't mean it pejoratively). Unsurprisingly, these two groups rarely agree on anything. But I think one thing everyone can agree on is that book Snape and movie Snape are two very different characters who have barely anything in common. We won't agree on which one is "better". I find book Severus way more interesting, relatable and likeable than Alan Rickman's character. Plenty of people will say that the exact opposite is true. That's okay, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I think everybody can agree they're two different characters.

I always hate the way the movies f up the Ron/Hermione argument. The moment in the movie not only makes Hernione seem like a devastated sad sack and Ron seems like he is malicious. In the book it is the argument doesn't happen until the ball is over and they have an equal shouting match that shows Ron is insecure and a bit clueless rather than malicious or vindictive This is always something that the movie series completely butchered is the reason for Ron’s character flaws. This moment is another huge example

Jo Winters

I think in the movie, Rita says that Hermione is into Krum because Krum gets angry when she is in the tent and tells her to leave after she calls Harry and Hermione 'young love'. The photos used in that article are from the tent and if you remember, after Krum told her to leave they took a photo of him, which would indicate that this was the plan. Maybe she sensed that Krum was interested because he got annoyed when she called them 'young love' or it was a lucky guess when she tried to make up some drama for the article. I think in the first book, we are told that Binns died in the teacher's room and then just got up as a ghost and went on teaching his class. Could it be that the way they always repeat 'wizard' is not as if they were saying the name of a species (like humans) but more like bringing up nationality since they are a minority of magical people in the majority of muggle people? Like 'Polish shop' would be equivalent of ' wizard wheezes'?

Tiegan

Fun fact: Hermione uses a potion to style her hair for the ball called ‘Sleekeazy’s hair potion’ that was created by Fleamont Potter, one of Harry’s ancestors!

On your point about Harry not seeing Ginny in a "new light", he didn't really see Parvati in a new light but he still asked her to the Yule Ball. I think if Ginny hadn't already been going to the Yule Ball with Neville and if Ron hadn't already offered her to go with Harry, he would still be willing to ask her even if it's just as a last resort. Granted you could also make a case that he would be too afraid to ask her because she's Ron's sister and Harry would worry what Ron would think about that (assuming that Ron hadn't already offered Ginny to go to the Ball with Harry). I also think that a lot of the comments in the book club are being too hard on Ron in these chapters. It's fine to point out or call out his flaws, but I think they are being too harsh about them and even exaggerating them to an extent. I don't think he ruined Hermione's time at the Yule Ball in the book. I also apologize that I don't add paragraphs for my sentences but I'm typing on a mobile device and when I press the enter/return button it just posts/saves the comment. There is no way for me to add a new line.

John Phillips

There are some Snape haters that hate Movie Snape because they think the movies made Snape too "likable". The same ones also accuse Snape fans of only liking Snape because of the movies or Alan Rickman. It really grind my gears how that is such a popular assumption because most Snape fans (myself included) from what I've seen prefer Book Snape over Movie Snape. The movies might have removed some of his flaws but they also removed a lot of his heroic moments and complex backstory.

i chock up Rite knowing about Hermione and Viktor to the movies leaving things out and getting things out of order. regarding Harry and Ron assuming Hermione does not have a date. you have to remember Hermione is meant to be the "ugly duckling" (not Emma Watson) that is why the reveal on the stars was meant to be a big deal. the makeover moment. makes Viktor asking her a bigger deal in my opinion, he saw pass the occword and nerdy shell. i think house elves can do the laundry as long as you do not give them the clothing. put it in the basket of to be washed clothing then the elf takes the basket and cleans it. well or your close never stay dirty. you just clean with a spell. i think JKR put many things in that make no sense if you have magic to make the charicaters "relatable". yes a crime of passion is a lesser charge, but killing someone because they are cheering on you would not count. it is about the circumstances. if you walk in on then and kill them on the spot that is a crime of passion. if you leave, go get a weapon, then come back and kill them it is premeditated. crime of passion = you lost control in the moment. my opinion there is no way the deathly hollows where planed in book one.

said it in your comment. I loved Alan Rickman years before he was choosen tp play Snape. I think he was to old to be Snape like 35 year old Alan would have been brilliant All in all, I adore Alans performance BECAUSE he makes people love Snape. I know Alan read the books when they came out AND he was very upset about some directors choices for his character. That went so far, that he as thinking of NOT coming back after film 4 or 5 and it took some while for him to settle that he'd continue to play Snape. Not sure hw much influence he had, since in his diaries you can read how frustrated he was about some of Snapes backstoy getting cut for teenage drama. I prefer book Snape, Even though he is way more flawed, he is also way more intersting. I am not a fan of his teaching behaviour - BUT I now he did not choose that position and I know how hard it is to work with people, even if you like them XD But then - I prefer I think amost all characters in the book (maybe Luna is the exception) since ALL characters lost so much to their screen counterparts. The same goes for Draco (and Tom Felton) for me Tom made Draco way to likeable.

Dara Jeeling

that's going to be a happy and calm sunday, then me a cup of tea and listening Also Rita Skeeter is so good in the books Her and Umbridge... *sigh* and yes, Rita picks up on a lot of something XD Wishing you a nice weekend

This is why I am okay with the attempt at a tv show, because it’s a chance for accurate characterization and missing plot to be brought to the audience. I don’t care how “iconic” the movies are they were being created before the book series was even done and it is utterly ridiculous for purists to assume that they can't tell a better version of this story which I felt should have been a tv series in the first place.

Hi Love your teacosy hat The "pre-Hogearts" presents are relatively normal. The "post-Hogearts" presents are the Dursley equivalent of the Deathly Hallows Tissue - cloak Toothpick - wand Coin - stone Also, here's the link for MovieFlame's channel I can't find the specific video I was referring to though. https://youtube.com/@movieflame?si=E8ZRlxnB-sxErfdB

So excited for this! By the way, it is stated in book 1 that Binns died while sat on a chair in front of the fire and simply got up as a ghost and continued teaching. So Harry's comment about his death not getting in the way of his teaching is pretty much bang on! He was a teacher, he died, and he continued teaching.

rreowenn

Also, the dress robes were on the list they get from the owl over summer so despite not knowing about the competition, all students would have known to take the robes. Mrs Weasley also bought some for Harry at the same time so he's had his since September as well!

Shiby23

2:54:00 I've got plenty i'd like to post but theres a lot to go through. I just found this the best thing to comment on so far. Getting dobby a really really good pressent "like a broom".... You free the clean slave elf, just to give him a broom as a gift!!!! I'm sure you didn't notice it when you said it but that was a pretty funny accident. One last edit about the ball. Tri-wizard schools host a ball/dance every year so the Flauer / Viktor would've 100% known a dance was occurring. If Potters class was so young, they probably wouldn't have been taught to dance. Since Harry was choses maybe that class was forced.

Dara Jeeling

So after finishing it (with a little Nap from my side - your voice is actually soothing) I was able to manage to get a few things for Halloween done (mainly drawings I now need to get onto Shirts or smallish bags)... THANK YOU! I know it can not be easy to do this! Can not wait for the next one XD Made my sunday it really did. Take care, you all!

Simon audsley

Thankfully I've now just finished the book club so can cleare up everyone's mistake that has been driving me mad all the time I've been listening the movie ball scene did not change the colour of any of the girls dresses from the book because none of the girls are wearing dresses, in the book everyone at the ball was wearing dress robes, these being smart formal robes for special social events, the the muggle equivalent being a white tie event.. Quote was from a sci-fi 80s movie.

Hey Veggie! So excited to watch this review and it couldn't have come at a better time since it's a stormy Sunday afternoon over where I am. This + hot cup of coffee = the perfect way to cure the Sunday scaries! As for the HBO/Max question - they just recently announced that the Harry Potter tv series will be considered an HBO Original and will air on the HBO channel on tv and on the Max streaming service. I think there is an age restriction for the Yule Ball to mimic the prom. The prom at most high schools are restricted to either juniors and seniors or just seniors. At the high school I attended, it was actually 2 separate events. There would be a junior prom one weekend and then senior prom the next weekend. Freshman and sophomore students (or students from other schools) could only attend if they were going with a junior or senior. We also had homecoming dance every year around thanksgiving time (coincided with the homecoming football game), but that was open to all four high school grades. Some other high schools also have Spring Fling, Winter Formal, and Sadie Hawkins dances.

You're definitely a book reader now Veggie. Your increasing frustration with the movie is a joy to watch because it is such a bad adaptation.

Neellohit Basu

Liar Liar. You were referencing the Great Jim Carrey.

Jacqueline Chaiton

We hear that Binns died and his ghost got up and continued teaching in the first book 🙂 Probably should have waited until I was done watching to comment, but oh well. Editing to add more thoughts. I guess the 50 pence piece would represent the resurrection stone because it’s round? I agree with you that Snape would probably be a good dancer, although I imagine he’d be pretty reluctant to actually dance. Side note, I have the Blue Jays game on mute (Toronto’s baseball team, my hometown team) and if you ever wanted to cheer for a team that will infuriate you 99% of the time but it will be so satisfying if they ever do the thing, choose a Toronto sports team. I’ve always assumed that Beauxbaton is closer to the Mediterranean side of France than the Channel side, so I can understand what she means by the food at Hogwarts being heavy. Mediterranean food is so different in comparison. I never really clocked anything weird about Hermione and Krum’s relationship, maybe because I was so young the first time I had it read to me and then when I really remember reading it again I was the same age as Hermione and I’d seen grade 9’s (freshmen for the Americans) dating grade 12’s (seniors) so it just never phased me. I don’t remember there being that much stigma about it, then again this was a decade and a half ago. If Krum was older and Hermione was less emotionally mature I would be more concerned about it. I must say I didn’t get your Richard Wilson joke but I did understand it was a joke so you’re all good there 👍 I never thought about Sirius signing his letters as Padfoot instead of with his name in case the letters got intercepted. I guess maybe because Padfoot was a well known nickname of his? Seamus and Dean are one of the more popular fanon couples out there, it would have been cool to see them together at the ball. One of my favourite things I’ve ever seen was someone making a post about Harry waking up in cold sweat in the middle of the night and floo’ing Ron being like we could have gone to the Yule ball TOGETHER! And Ron being like oh my god I can’t believe we didn’t think of that! I haven’t seen the post in a long time but it made me giggle. To quote Jane Foster quoting I think Arthur C Clarke, magic is just science we don’t understand. I went with my best friend of now close to 30 years to prom, it was 14 years at the time. He’s gay and I’m bi and neither of us had our natural hair colour at the time 🤣The way Give Me Everything has been brought back into popularity because of Bridgerton has brought me right back to that time because when that song was new was when I was graduating/going to prom. I’ve thought for a while that Krum was drawn to Hermione because she did not care that he was an international quidditch star, and just treated him like a normal person, which makes me sad. Daniel’s Tony was for his role in Merrily We Roll Along 🙂 Belle wears yellow, I think my point was just that it wasn’t blue, haha 🤣 although I think her cloak is pink? I’ll admit I haven’t seen Emma’s version of Beauty and the Beast. We’re Not Gonna Take It is Twisted Sister! That’s pretty much the only song of theirs I know. Since I’ve been old enough to think about these things, I’ve always assumed the Patil’s were at least half-bloods. You should definitely wait until you’ve read all the books before you watch any Movie Flame videos, they’re really good though and they can go quite in depth. Super Carlin Brothers are another channel I’d recommend once you finish reading the books. They’re actually doing a podcast going through each book chapter by chapter but from the perspective of people who have literally read the books hundreds of times. Where would Harry have seen anyone in top hats and tails? I looked it up and the only royal wedding he would possibly remember, if somehow Petunia let him watch, would have been Sarah and Andrew and that was 8 days before his 5th birthday. The Dursleys have committed to the bit of terrible Christmas gifts, you’ve gotta respect when someone commits to the bit. Honestly until people brought it up in this book club I never thought about Moody’s eye and how creepy it could be. In the right hands it would be fine, because the person wouldn’t take advantage of it. But is it in the right hands right now? I feel like at this point we need to just make a blanket statement that the actors in the movies did great with what they were given. Was what they were given as good as the books? No. But they did great work with what they had. Ron hasn’t laughed at squibs, he’s laughed at Filch. Like in general I don’t think he finds squibs funny and he did say something to that effect, it was just that it explained why Filch was so miserable all the time. Not to say that I think he should had laughed at Filch for being a squib, just pointing that out. You are saying heteronormativity correctly, btw 🙂 I’m 100% calling it the 16th chapel from now on, that is hilarious. Apparently Hermione is a name in one of Shakespeare’s plays, I think A Winter’s Tale? One popular head canon is that the Grangers were Shakespeare fans and that’s why she was named the way she was. Hawwah and I disagree on many things but one thing we will always agree on is how different book Snape and movie Snape are. I also prefer book Snape, though I do love Alan Rickman’s portrayal as well. I think because he was never my favourite character I’ve always been able to enjoy both.

Hairy Pothead

1:39:29 Hermione actually interrupts Harry's reading of the letter to exclaim "That's what Krum did!" right after he reads the part about the Conjunctivitis curse :)

S1lm4r1l

I thought the 50p piece was a reference to Charon the Ferryman from Greek Mythology. You have to pay him to cross into the Afterlife.

Jacqueline Chaiton

You could totally be right, I’m not really knowledgeable on mythology.

Just for your information Veggie, McGonagall says in the movie that "The Yule Ball has been a tradition of the Triwizard Tournament since its inception", so it shouldn't have been new information. She also says it's on Christmas eve. All of this information is given at the beginning of the dance scene, you just missed it.

Music Here

About the Wizarding Wireless Network, "Wireless" is an old name for radio; it was actually used more before the term radio took over. Therefore, it's really just saying Wizarding Radio Network. Whether it uses actual radio waves is irrelevant, though, since they're really just interested in copying the result of the muggle technology, not the method. Basically, 'wireless' is an anachronism here.

Alias93

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my comment about Krum, I agree with you that he probably wasn't coming to the library to ask Hermione to the ball from the beginning. He might have known a ball was coming (as it is tradition in the triwizard tournament, and like the Hogwarts student they would have been told at the start of the school year to bring dress robes), but it would have been weird to ask her before the ball was officially announced. I think he was going to the library to get a chance to talk to Hermione and get to know her, but with the Harry/Ron situation, she was usually hanging with Harry at that time and Krum probably wished to talk to her in private. I guess it was only after the first task, when Harry and Ron started hanging out together again, that Krum finally got the chance to approach Hermione, and eventually asked her to be his partner for the ball.

Jo Winters

I agree with you, I don't think they were planned. I don't think even the third book was planned in detail during the first on. I would guess that the 7th was planned during writing of the 5th
