yay, something to do after work today. :) and the best timing for my checking

LETS GO, GONNA BE AN ALLNIGHTER

Wayne Joy

I'll check in after I finish watching this in a few days.

Liz

Oooh yay won't be able to watch it all tonight but kids are in bed so this is perfect 👌

S1lm4r1l

My spider sense tingled at the right time. Yippee! Edit: Veggie starts the video off with "Hear me out." Oh boy! :D Edit 2: I've never considered that Tonks can change her physical appearance at will, but can't shake the name her parents gave her. That's hilarious.

K

re: orphanages, it's certainly possible they exist, but my assumption has always been that in the tiny insular wizarding society children in need are normally taken in by family or friends or even strangers with some tenuous connection to them. I can't imagine that there are enough kids with no one at all for there to be numerous orphanages. Presumably some halfbloods would end up in the muggle system, depending on their situation.

Jake M

Just a reminder- Hedwig is a she! He moved to Dudley's spare room in the first book, as his second letter is addressed "Harry Potter, the Smallest Bedroom". You're confusing it with the movie, where he's not shown moving until the second film. The catflap was installed after they locked him in his room following Dobby's mischief, so food could be put through twice a day.

Briana

SO excited to watch this, and to know I finally got a comment in the book club, really needed this today :)

Madikuma95

Love the thumbnail 😂

K

The only reason I can think of for why they excluded Lupin from the scene at the Dursleys would be that they wanted to give the audience a minute to get to know Tonks as a new character without distracting them by reintroducing an old one. The book has all the time in the world to make sure Tonks gets her moment to shine, but in the minute-long movie scene at the Dursleys the Lupin reunion would completely overshadow the new character. I personally think they might as well have cut Tonks from the movies for all they did with her, so I would've preferred Lupin, but that's my speculation.

Jake M

"What kitchen appliance would wizards like Arthurfind most intersting?" That's the Veggie we come for! XD

VeggieGamer

So true, K! I think in that case, I would prefer Lupin over Moody being there. That way we could of got the banter between him and Tonks right off the bat! I think that could have even improved the moment and her introduction! But then again, I am a Lupin mark! XD

VeggieGamer

Considering how obsessed with my rice cooker I am, I am going for that!

K

One last thought now that I'm through with your review portion. I find Harry's relationship with Fred and George interesting, because I often get the sense that he is very impressed with them in the way that kids often are by older kids who are funny and popular. It's one of the little things in his character that makes him feel like a real teenage boy to me. My read on the scene where they interrupt the yelling has always been that he's embarassed to be seen mid-tantrum by his friend's cool older brothers. Thanks so much for the vid Veggie, I enjoy these so much and they make my day when they come out! Can't wait to go for a long walk and start working my way through the book club comments. :) edit: One other burning thought I can't hold onto! As a certified Percy fan, I do think it's important to remember that he doesn't always get the short end of the stick from his family. While we certainly see the twins bully him a bit (which they also do to Ron, more harmfully IMO since he is younger than them), we also see his mother constantly singing his praises and berating the twins for not being more like him. He gets gifts like being the only kid in the family to have his own owl in recognition of his achievements. The Weasley family dynamics are complicated, but while he might be a bit of an odd one out among the brothers I don't see him as a perpetual victim. I don't think that's your take, but it's certainly one that I've seen from my fellow Percy fans.

Garfnob

taking bets as to when Veggie will need to make two videos book review and book club so it will be under 6 hours. yes, Percy would give the ministry whatever info he could. would he go sneaking around to get the info? i do not know, but if he was living in the house he would over hear things. o, ya, Percy thinks it is his ability that got him the job. that does not change him being a git. you just add dense to it.

Gareth Rasal

I liked your take on Percy trying to see it from his point of view, something you only do as an adult reading this for the first time. A sign of a great character is if people interpret it differently than the author initially intended. (I am assuming there) Couple of things to bear in mind on the Percy front. There is a mention during the discussion that Fudge had already been investigating people like Arthur for having links to Dumbledore and Percy had got into trouble over Crouch, so Percy not at least suspecting why he was promoted is possibly naïve and blinkered. Plus he has clearly been thinking what he throws at Arthur for some time I don't see it as something he is saying just purely in the heat of the moment. A great set of chapters for introducing major new characters, emotions all around and building on the relationships with Ron, Hermione, Fred, George and Ginny.

PumpkinSparks

It was quite evil of you to post this about the time I thought about retiring to bed 😈 Did I decide to start it right away anyway? Yeah. Did I watch longer than I wanted? Yep. Did I fall asleep to your musings about Lupin and that kinda intertwined with my half asleep sorta dream? Maybe? Did my brain decide to create a Veggie voice to narrate my dream? Possibly. Was that confusing as heck? Absofuckinglutely! Well, at least now I know what I'll do tonight 😬 I have no idea where I lost you though... pretty sure they were still in Privet Drive...

Methanoutput

Okay here are my five cents on Percy: I think we are really missing a lot of context of the actual argument between Percy and his father. My not so hot take is, that Arthur was probably exhausted and maybe even harassed at work for being a "Dumbledore Supporter" and Percy is coming home with this big great news (This is of course speculation, as i said, we miss context). I also think that Arthur is not getting heated about the other shortcomings from his children, because in his eyes, they are not THAT important, but this matter (being on the "right side") is very important for him and i think, that is also why he gets so heated. I also think that Arthur gets so heated, is because he expected better from Percy, because Percy is certainly not stupid and was always a "good son" in the sense of, sticking to the rules etc. But this is also where things do go wrong. Certainly Percy know's, that his father has tinkered with muggle stuff, which is supposed to be illegal, maybe that was the first time, he was kind off questioning the authority from his father, because he is not as good of a man, as Percy thought he was. This role is then overtaken by Fudge for Percy to idolize. I guess it really depends in the situation on the wording of both, how they deal with this argument. Both get heated and therefore it goes to a really bad situation, where i also think, Percy deep down knows he said really bad things, but he is too proud to apologize. I think Arthur is not to proud to apologize, but he thinks, if he apologizes, then its bad parenting.

Jo Winters

I think they see the house, Harry doesn't. I do think that Percy has a right to complain to his father and even be resentful about the poverty. Especially seeing as Mrs Weasley, who is intelligent and capable, stays 'at home' without kids to look after, while they barely manage. I think that parents have a duty to provide a good life for their kids. Financially too. Their constant issues are what made Percy the way he is. Of course, he will be a victim of propaganda, because the only thing that he wanted, the thing that got him through growing up poor, is entangled with it. It's hard to give up the most important thing for you, for something you are not sure of either (Dumbledore's revelations). He chose what is closer to his dream, the reality closer to that.

Jo Winters

Kreacher is one of my favourite characters in the whole series. And I mean it and not just because he has some comedic scenes. I think Fred and George say before this book that NOBODY likes Snape, and he is mean in general. I think Snape is an unpleasant and a mean bully. That doesn't mean he's all evil, but this man joined Voldemort before and is an ex-death eater. I think he has a good side, but many pretty bad people do, and that bad side makes him useful. Considering that Snape is close to my age here, I actually see him now differently than I did as a kid. That's because I know how much growing up people in their 30s have to do haha

Alias93

Hi Veggie! I agree with your take on the Percy situation, he 100% believed that he got the promotion because of his hard work, and that's why he got so hurt by what his father said. And to be fair, I don't think he's completely wrong about that. It's very likely that Fudge did give him this job in hopes of using him to get information on Dumbledore and the order (without telling him of course), and I wonder what Fudge's reaction was when Percy announced that he just cut all ties to his family to prove his loyalty to the ministry, making him completely useless for that purpose. If Fudge didn't need him for anything else, would he have kept him after that? I think Percy is actually pretty good at his job, he got his first job as Mr Crouch's assistant based on his own merits after all. I don't remember the movie being particularly quiet when I watched it, maybe it depends on the version you're watching? Sorry if my comment didn't make it clear, the thing hidden behind curtains Kreacher was talking to in that scene in the movie was Mrs. Black's portrait, and it talks to him too (much quieter than what we got in the book of course). They had the setup, they even included Tonks tripping on the umbrella stand, but nothing ever came of it...

Alicia P

Thanks for the great discussion, Veggie! Re: Percy, I believe Ron says Percy expected Arthur to be 'impressed' about his promotion, which has a different meaning than 'glad'. This could just be Ron's take, but it's not necessarily wrong. Percy's feelings about being promoted are ego-driven, which is understandable and normal, especially considering his age and inexperience. However, if he had taken a moment to consider the wider context of what was happening at the Ministry and within his own family, he could have seen what was going on. It would be disappointing and it possibly would have shaken his world view, but Disillusionment (a major theme of this novel) can be a painful but necessary step toward viewing the world and one's place in it in a more realistic way. That being said, it sounds like Arthur could have been way more tactful in his conversation with Percy. He clearly mishandled it.

PumpkinSparks

I wanna throw in my take on Percy as well. I always sorta understood where he's coming from. He must have been SO PROUD when the minister himself wanted to hire him after working at the ministry for just one year (and even landing a job with Crouch as the entry job and how quickly he got more meaningful work was quite an achievement - so he certainly is good at what he's doing and is rightfully proud of it) But the Weasley in general are quite emotional people. All of the reactions (parents AND Percy) probably weren't worded carefully with calm emotions and intend, but said in the moment as they were felt. Which usually results in emotional and irrational responses. If Arthur would have said that the promotion is an amazing achievement but has he considered the political aspects. Percy might have been a bit hurt but might have taken it into account. If Percy wouldn't have blown up but told Arthur that he thought his father would be proud of him, there might have been a discussion of the different viewpoints. It probably would have still been a blowout to some extend (in the end Percy is a teenager with hurt feelings) but there would have been a path of reconciliation. With the bang that it was? Really bad things were said, and honestly Percy probably vented about his unreasonable parents at work where they happily steered him into the ministry way, and I feel that Percy now feels like he has to double down on his decision. At least that is how I read the situation... BUT Percy was wrong in one major thing he threw at Arthur. The handful of people on top might think poorly of him, but we see in GoF how connected and liked and respected Arthur is in the ministry. My hot take? He might not have been the career (because he genuinly loves his job) but he has way more influence in the ministry as certain people think!

This will be explained in chapter 6, Veggie isn't supposed to know about it for now. @Annette I'm replying here because apparently you can't add a reply to a deleted comment. Tbh I thought so too (or maybe just after they got inside the house), I only realized it happened later when reading some of the replies in the book club, and when I looked it up I was surprised it was explained so late, I was sure it would have at least been brought up during the dinner conversation in chapter 5.

Annette Elliott

Crud. I thought it had already been explained in the square outside the house.. maybe I should delete it.

Simon audsley

The irony savgekim gave you a reminder on wand safety right after you did a live demo of possible injuries a wand can cause. Have just listened to the tonks fry voice and can only say in my best dulcet harry tones I TAKE GREAT UMBRIDGE THAT ANYONE THINKS THAT THAT IS A YORKSHIRE ACCENT AND I SHOULD BLOODY WELL KNOW WAT ONE O' THEM SOUNDS LIKE. He seems to be trying to do a west country accent and failing badly there seems to be a combination west country, Leeds and something else going on I think he should just stick to his Jeeves voice personally that or lord melchett. would have made more sense if it was 13 grimauld place as everyone would expect that to be missing. Veggie youtubes answer to Barry white

VeggieGamer

So sorry about saying the accent could have been Yorkshire, Simon! I am awful at identifying them!! XD Now all I want in the would is for Tonks to be voiced in full Melchett voice - "I'm a Metamorphamagus! BAAAAAH!"

Katie

I really appreciate your Percy discussion. I've read the books many times and I'm used to just hating on Percy but it's good to hear a fresh perspective. Thinking back to the scene at the beginning of book 3 where the Weasleys plus Harry and Hermione are having a meal at the Leaky Cauldron, the twins are making fun of Percy and everyone but Molly laughs, meaning Arthur was laughing too. I can image moments like that happened quite often and that must have felt quite isolating for Percy. There are also moments where Molly is praising Percy for his achievements and then being cross with Fred and George for not taking school seriously. As a mother, of course Molly should be proud of Percy, but the way she compares him to the twins just exacerbates the situation. I can imagine it must be a lonely feeling for him to be so different from his siblings. Percy absolutely thinks he's been promoted based on his merits. The problem is his naivety and that he's not listening to his parents concerns. Based on Fudge's behaviour at end of book 4, Percy is working for the enemy now. I think Percy is ashamed of his family's status and wants to be better than his father. Arthur is trying to protect his family and Percy's promotion is a threat to that. I'm not sure how else Arthur could react though. He's worried for his family's safety, and worried for Percy being used by Fudge. The promotion just can't be something to celebrate. Percy is very young though and at the beginning of his career. I can understand the situation from his perspective but the way he treats his family after the fight is awful.

Katie

I think the reason Tonks is able to perform magic at Privet Drive is one of three reasons: - She is an Auror who is with other high ranking members of the Ministry, like Kingsley and they likely informed The Ministry that they would be at that location. Them being at The Dursley's wasn't something they had to keep secret from The Ministry, it was the destination that had to be secret. - Tonks is a powerful Auror and probably has the ability to perform magic undetected. - Harry was already in trouble with the Ministry due to performing underage magic so it's unlikely he'd receive any more letters at this point because he already had a court date set.

Grace S

Thank you for your defense of Percy, Veggie! I really like him too, and I relate to him a lot, being a very ambitious and work-driven person who puts a lot of their worth in professional achievements. I know I would have been devastated if either of my parents had reacted like that to me getting promoted at a job I am passionate about.

Psykotik

Absolutely zero sympathy for Percy at that point in the story. Firstly for believing the Prophet/Ministry/Fudge's propaganda over his family, Dumbledore, and Harry's word whom he knows personally, and yet he decided to chose a side without even having a conversation hearing out Harry's version of the story. Does he think Cedric died of natural causes at the end of the previous book? Does he think Crouch Sr. just fled the country? Does he think his parents and siblings just moved to Grimmauld place on a whim? It just doesn't make sense unless he literally didn't think about it for a second, which in the context of the ending of the 4th book just does not hold. Hell Harry literally saved his sister from being possessed by Voldemort not even three years ago in Chambers. And secondly for valuing his career and ambition over his relationship with his own family, and the safety of the magical world. If he'd rather deny the fact that pure blood supremacists might be rising up once again because it might cost him a high ranking ministry job, once again not even trying to join or find out any info about the Order's role in this war, then yeah that's not a good look in my book. Expecting his father to be proud of a promotion doesn't excuse any of that for me, especially considering his parents were alive during the first Voldemort wars. They know first hand how bad things are about to get, and he doesn't even trust them enough to either explain this to him, or believe them if they did. He'd rather just disown his family and keep trying to stay in Fudge's good book. Either his ambition is blinding him or he's just too dumb to realize the state of things IMO. I just don't think that he acted like a decent person there considering how he was brought up. But then again I tend to really dislike people who put importance on their position in society, or the on power their jobs gives them, so I'm as biased as you are, just in the other way. If he wasn't a Weasley and didn't know Harry, or if Ginny didn't have her little Chambers escapade, I would more inclined to forgive him for falling for the propaganda. But as things stand, there's no excuses for him IMO.

Ziro the Hutt

Both Dumbledore and McGonagall, are half-blood interestingly, since you ask about the blood status of the teachers. And alongside Harry himself (and Tom Riddle of course), it just goes to show that being pure-blood doesn't guarantee power, when these four, are extremely powerful magical people. The only pure-blood I would say that is up there with these four (in the modern era excluding the Hogwarts Founders or someone like Merlin), would be Grindelwald. If you are worried about the length of the vids, then just split them in two, no? One for your notes, one for the Book Club? I personally prefer the note reading and hearing your reactions to the books, over the Book Club, though sometimes of course I watch that too. There is no need to rush Veg, imho. I've called Percy a "git" quite a lot of times, and I do stand by that; however, I can see where you are coming from Veggie about Percy's promotion. He didn't deserve to be investigated as a junior for the Crouch fiasco, when more experienced Ministry people didn't see what was going on either; and of course he would accept a promotion to be nearer the Minister. Now, Arthur is also right for the reason why Percy is promoted, to keep an eye on them and anyone who is in contact or friendly with Dumbledore. HOWEVER, Percy is then wrong to start laying into his family and back the ministry wholeheartedly, when he hears his father's opinion; he isn't stupid. He also knows Harry and Dumbledore, and is being disingenuous as he knows neither would lie about Voldemort coming back; so keeps his head in the sand and is putting his career ahead of his family and friends. This is my issue with him; its alright to be ambitious, and we do see how he is kind of the loner of the Weasley's (though I would say that Ron gets it worse because he's the least unique sibling he feels), but to blindly pursue your own career, and drag your kith and kin through the mud - is wrong. He is hurt by what Arthur says, I agree Veg, but how he gives his family the cold shoulder, and Harry is awful. We are only just starting this so will see how you react later. Its good character development, but it also stinks.

Ziro the Hutt

However, they have been proud of him and supported him as best as they could each time his name was brought up in the previous books; they understand his drive to push on to pursue a successful career and make his mark. Yet this is how he responds, when his father pushes back at his promotion, telling him exactly why he's been promoted? He isn't stupid, so to bury his head in the sand, to disown his parents and believe the obvious propaganda, especially when the Ministry was more than happy to reprimand him over the Crouch fiasco, is poor.

Ziro the Hutt

Yeah we hear later that Tonks is the only new Auror took on by the ministry in the last three years, so to become one is a hell of an achievement, despite her clumsiness.

When is it said that Dumbledore is half-blood? I'm pretty sure both his parents were from the wizarding world. I know the notion of "pure blood" is open to interpretation, and while I would technically consider Harry to be pure blood (since both James and Lily were a wizard and a witch), some characters in the story do not (Voldemort for example, who even calls Lily a muggle, even though she technically is a muggle-born). I guess Dumbledore could have some muggle ancestry, but not as direct as Hermione or Tom Riddle for example.

Ziro the Hutt

Dumbledore's mother Kendra was muggle born. It gets covered in DH, which I just finished again the other night - though admittedly skipped past all that, as its the least interesting stuff in the book. I agree about the notion of "half" and "pure" blood is just semantics as well, as the first witches and wizards would have come out of an evolution of humans - muggles - anyway you'd think. Its just gatekeeping and stopping social climbing, as we have seen for countless centuries across the word as "nobles" and "royals" shut the door for meritocracy, in order to keep the status quo.

Isis Peoples

Imagine a 19 year old being the Right Hand Man to the Prime Minister of the UK. Percy is not qualified. Point blank period. Percy is smart. Some would argue smarter than Hermione. Not just a 19 yr old, but a 19 yr old who fumbled his job being Crouch's secretary. Make no mistake: Fudge is using Percy. Even if he didn't "see it" beforehand, Percy refuses to consider the possibility. Refuses to listen to his family. Considering the possibility would mean Percy lowering his own ego. He is a child, and teenager. Throwing a temper tamptrum. Propaganda is not always an excuse for ignorance. There's a point when you walk into willfull ignorance. Percy has an abundance of information, access, and intelligence. I think its insulting to imply he's too gullible to be swayed by words in a newspaper. Like I said, Percy is choosing ignorance.

Sara

I can't understand people who hate on Percy for this argument between him and Arthur. Some of the stuff he does later, fair, but this argument was 95% ARTHUR'S fault! Percy is a 19-year-old teenager who's just been through a traumatic event of losing a person he respected, and then being blamed and sent to inquiries for the death. And then he comes home with good news, and what does his father do? Accuses him of being willing to spy on his own family for career advancement. Oh, and did I mention this accusation happened IN FRONT OF THE FAMILY IN QUESTION! So, Arthur, the adult man, can't be arsed to take his traumatized son into another room for this conversation? He feels entitled to air out the fact that he doesn't trust or respect Percy while his siblings and mother are sitting in the same room? Also, I think it's very telling that we never hear Arthur's side of the argument from the Weasleys. The fact that the twins don't even want to repeat what Arthur said speaks volumes. I think the closest we get is the "I've never seen dad that angry before" line, which, considering we've seen Arthur in a literal fistfight before, doesn't exactly make me think that what Arthur said to Percy wasn't just as or more vile than what we hear Percy say.

Silas Adler

Tbh I agree that Percy thinks he is only being promoted for being a a great employee BUT I also think that he is so obsessed and arrogant that he won’t consider anything about himself that isn’t positive. It is quite obvious that he normally wouldn’t get promoted since he is investigated for being bad at his job. And I also believe that he despises (strong word I know) his family for not being ambitious and blames them for everything.

Jacqueline Chaiton

I obviously won't say what this is in relation to but there have been so many times during the series in general when you say something that will be relevant later and, if I were on The Office, I'd be looking straight at the camera. I wish I had been keeping track! Also I am totally the same way with working all day then realizing you haven't eaten, I wonder if that's a common ADHD/Autistic thing we share many similarities (I have ADHD).

CR Ash

The thumbnail has me in tears ngl haha
