Over a week late... HERE IT IS, GUYS! What a couple of chapters we cover today, in the Harry Potter Book Review!

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER! - By the end of the video, I am pretty exhausted and a lil stressed about getting everything in. I am sorry about this and hope it doesn't affect your enjoyment of the video (I think it is ok, but I just want to make sure I declare it just in case. :)).

Also, I have only just noticed, that in the thumbnail I have become one of those people that point at words (unintentionally, I kinda find that sort of thing annoying XD).

As usual, even though we have a LOT to discuss in the chapters, we also discuss water flossers, Ringu 0 (/Birthday), Nectarines not being oranges, me not knowing what Poldark is, and me spending a lot of time and money trying to track down something that doesn't exist.

We ALSO meet 2 excellent characters here, which I had heard of but never expected to actually meet in the book!

Love you, guys! I am so sorry for the delay. It is partly because of the chapter lengths, but also life got in the way a lil too. I'll be sure to try and avoid keeping you waiting in the future!!

Badger Kat

I kept thinking I forgot how to access it!

VeggieGamer

VeggieGamer

SORRY GUYS!! THE VIDEO IS NOW THERE! XD I linked to the thumbnail by acident!

Badger Kat

I’m sure you’re exhausted now, get some rest and take care of yourself!

Cari Ann

Its still not coming up for me 😭

Badger Kat

Odd, it did work for me, maybe try closing out of patreon and reopen?

VeggieGamer

Please refresh again. It IS there. If the issue persists after a few more minutes, let me know, but it is there on my end.

Badger Kat

Good job on getting the video in under 6 hours, I wasn’t sure if it would happen!

Cari Ann

Yes completely closing the app down worked, thank you!!

Sam-I-Am

Yay! So excited for this video and to hear your thoughts/reactions to Ch. 23! The St. Mungo’s scene not being included in the movie is one of the things I’m still genuinely upset about

Madikuma95

Don't worry Veggie, I got your Sirius joke, mostly 'cause I also thought of that while re-listening to the audiobook. 😂 Alliteration is when words in a phrase all start with the same letter! Hey scrambled eggs can be pretty good, especially with ketchup! :P I'm always so curious whenever Fry's voice for Tonks is brought up because I've never heard it. The crossed wand and bone is the symbol for St. Mungos. I don't think it's that Harry wouldn't mind if the Dursley's were hurt by Voldemort, more that he doesn't think Voldemort would target them, as they aren't part of the magical world. Poison would be something you eat, while venom is injected through fangs or stingers!

Cari Ann

Fizzing whizbees are a magical candy that make you float. You may have eaten them in hogwarts legacy, I do by accident thinking it might be an item all the time lol

Dara Jeeling

the words you are looking for Sirius reaction is 2not being recless" which he never learned and now he has to make others see it is bad!

jolt45

St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies is alliteration. Thats the word you were looking for at the beginning.

Garry (Not Jerry)

“I Swear” is coming to Netflix on Tuesday! I shall be watching it for sure!

I knew this one would have been difficult to keep under 6 hours when I saw you were doing both of these chapters together. Next month should be much easier, chapter 24 isn't even book exclusive. I focused on Chapter 22 because I knew people were going to beat Chapter 23 to death in the comments. A lot of people really turned on the movies for doing absolutely nothing with St. Mungos. Chapter 22 was a lot more stressful if you hadn't seen the movie first, especially with JK Rowling announcing that she would kill off an established character before the book was released.

jolt45

You were talking about people putting items outside their house to be picked up by anyone around 1:05:00. That is a common practice in many US cities. In my hometown, (Fargo, ND, USA), there are two weeks every May the city has designated as "Spring Cleanup Weeks" which encourages residents to put anything they might have trouble disposing of out on the boulevard in front of their house and the city will come by on their usual trash/recycling day to dispose of it. They haul away anything from construction debris, to old furniture, or even vehicles/appliances like refrigerators or lawnmowers. The whole thing is free of charge and heavily promoted by the city. It wasn't until I moved away that I realized many places don't have that. I suppose if you were to visit the city during that time though, it would probably seem like a dump 😅

I feel like I tend to comment on all the things that don't make sense to me and therefore seem to not like the books, so this time in bookclub I made the concious effort to focus on stuff I love that hadn't been talked about yet. It did help me to do an actual short-ish comment (woo-hoo!!!), but I do agree with you that portrait logistics are incredibly inconsistent and St Mungos location (and actually the ministry as well) doesn't make sense at all! Portraits/Photographs: There seems to be a difference between photos and paintings. Photos for the most part seem to be more like snapshots in time. Paintings have more of a personality, can converse with people, and have more autonomy? And then in Hogwarts the portraits can interact with each other and go into each others frames etc (does there painting style switch accordingly?) So far so good. BUT! In the first book Dumbledore vanishes from his chocolate frog card and Ron states that we can't expect them to stay for always. But then next book when Harry is in the prophet with Lockhardt his picture tries to hide because he's uncomfortable. Why doesn't he just leave? Then this book Percy vanishes from all the family pictures because of very obvious reasons, suggesting that even photographs understand what changed in their personal life and act accordingly. But at the same time Wormtail is still in the old Order photo, suggesting that it truly is just a snapshot of time! I suspect that the portraits in the headmasters office have an extra enchantement to them? But, everytime Harry was in the office he saw the previous headmasters sleeping, so they were clearly there. Then Dilys, Everard, and Phineas left their portrait to deal with the aftermath of the attack. So they physically have to leave to interact with their other locations. Are the portraits in the Ministry and St Mungos pretty much always empty? St Mungos: Generally I understand the thought that an underground hospital would be a bad idea because no sunlight, no fresh air, etc. But you can't tell me they cannot deal with that magically! And yeah, why does it have to be in the city? I would make more sense to have a hospital somewhere rural, and just like we Muggles have ambulances they can have a healer apparating service helping them to get there. Plus most wizards don't live in London anyways! Same with the ministry, why does it have to be in London? It's incredible. The author did some of the best writing and created an amazingly rich world filled with amazing characters that captivate us decades later and certain parts are SO well thought through. But at the same time she is one of the most incosistent storytellers, who does not think past the 2 scentences she wrote. It's absolutely fascinating!!! Of course, St Mungos has a whole ward for Sirius Bites! Dog bites can very easily lead to severe infections!!! New drinking game? Take a shot everytime Veggie says "this is me getting through my notes"

It's nice to see how much you appreciate and understand the character of Augusta (Neville's grandmother). Some people over criticize her because she is too strict with Neville. They forget that she lived through the war and lost what was most precious to her, and her toughness is simply a desire to make sure the same doesn't happen to her grandson. Yes, she places high expectations on him, but that's because she understands what an unforgiving world awaits Neville and wants to make sure he can survive it.

Cari Ann

I love headmaster black (not trying to spell his name lol) as well so no you are not alone theres definitely people who like his rants too. He just gets better too!

Dobby Delfstoffer

I haven't caught up with the last few book clubs yet so I'm not sure if you already said something about this recently, but I really recommend the new full-cast audiobooks! I don't think it's necessary to make separate video's to review them, you can just listen to them instead of Stephen Fry or Jim Dale. They are literally the same text as the normal books, so you won't miss out on any of the details, and it won't take you extra time. It's just different voices for every character and lots of sound effects, which makes them really immersive. The fifth audiobook will be released on March 10th, so from then on you could just pick it up where you left off with the "normal" audiobooks. Again, I don't think it would make sense to make separate reviews about them since it's still the same text, just enjoy them for yourself!

Cari Ann

Next time you play hogwarts legacy explore the kitchen and you can see where the hogwarts house elves sleep, there is a revelio page there. I do agree with you about S.P.E.W. house elves definitely need some help, but not forced freedom if they don't want it like she was trying to do at first. Her gift for kreacher was really nice imo.

Margarita Pizza

I knew what the line would be before you said it. Poor Neville. He's tied with McGonagall for my favorite character in the series. Also: I can't help it -- I get bloomin' annoyed that people continue to write entire Dickensian novels in the comments despite Veggie asking so politely to keep them short.

S1lm4r1l

I will not stand for this Scrambled Eggs slander! They're great. Little bit of butter, stirring constantly on low heat, bit of salt and pepper, maybe some spice if you're feeling adventurous. Lightly toasted, buttered toast, beans. Scrumptious. Venomous = It bites you and you die. Poisonous = You bite it and you die. Re: the length of the video stress. I think the significant factor is that people are not keeping their comments short. I can understand first comments and wanting to express oneself. But there are a lot of very wordy comments that could've been made 2/3 the length through editing them down.

There is a scene with neville explaining what happens to his parents to harry in the room of requirement. Although the audience is first told about it in the pensive scene in tbe previous film, the scene where he tells harry is in there more to remind the audience and also to build upto the introduction to Bellatrix and to link her to the incident. But the fact he tells harry voluntarily is a change i don't love. I just hate the fact this scene was missing In defence of tonks accent (shes my favourite huffflepuff) the text in the book is written with the accent (letters missing from words) - "wotcher arry, ow's it going?" as an example Also a chomp was 10p, so were space raiders, fudge bar was 15p. Dread to think how much they are now but they are still in the minature heros

Dani Phantom

i’ve never noticed the inconsistencies with the photos sometimes being able to leave and sometimes not. i’d definitely call that a plot hole lol you’re so right about beautiful world building but forgetting what was written 2 sentences ago. the only thing i can think of is the one line in chamber of secrets where colin creevey says if he develops the film in the right potion, the picture will move. i wonder if there are different levels or degrees of that potion? or maybe just more or less successful potion making? it’s a reach, and a head cannon for sure, but it could make sense lol

Alex Hopps

Agreed! Scrambled eggs and toast is my favourite breakfast by far

Alex Hopps

I think hugh lorrie makes such an amazing dumbledore, as much as i enjoyed both dumbledore actors previously, his portrayal of the character makes the new verisions worth it for me. Sound effects are a bit off putting for me though

Alex Hopps

Glad someone said it. I was rather annoyed scrolling through the comments. I nearly deleted my own just to try not to add to it.

That is an awesome system! In german cities it's quite normal to put stuff in front of your house you don't need anymore. Usually you would put up a sign "to give away" (or if they're smaller put them in a box) and if they're not too shabby they're usually picked of before the garbage people come. Anything that is left, they throw away. It isn't really "allowed" but it's common practice and noone really cares. You can't do that with bigger things like sofas or refrigerators though. Those we still have to get rid of ourselves. But it's fairly easy and cheap to ask for them to come and pick those up - I think like 10 to 15 Euros depending what it is. And for a bit extra (where I live 20 euro max) they will also help you carry it out of your apartment. And very important: you're not allowed to obstruct the sidewalk too much. If people complain they can't pass, they will fine you - and that's a hefty fine! So just use your common sense, and it's a really good system! Nothing compared to how they managed it in your hometown though. That is really cool!

jolt45

Yes, the way you describe German cities is how most US towns and cities operate, especially near University campuses. In my hometown, you can also schedule a pick up or take your things to the city transfer station but there's a charge for having it picked up. Once youre used to the system, you just set things out in May and then you never have to pay, even for the larger things.

On the repartition of the chapters for the book club, you mentionned doing 1 – 2 – 1 for the next book clubs, but I remember people saying that chapters 28 and 29 (which come after the next 4 chapters) should be standalones, so it would end up being 1 – 2 – 1 – 1 – 1. If you want to avoid that, you could maybe do 1 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 1? I need to reread chapter 29 but I agree that 28 should definitely have its own video. Tbh I wouldn’t mind you doing all of the next book clubs as one chapter each until they get back to a more reasonable length starting with chapter 32. About photographs being in black and white, remember that in CoS Colin Creevey (who is muggle born) said that in order for the photographs to move you need to develop them with a special potion, so my understanding is that photography in the wizarding world is just using the muggle technology and then adding magic to it. So in that way it makes sense that they would have started with black and white pictures like muggles did. I personally don’t trust AI chatbots (or anything AI) at all, from my understanding of how they work I see them as kind of similar to Trelawney: they’re not giving you actual information, but rather they are trying to predict what you want them to say, and will sometimes just make stuff up or contradict themselves. And when you think they are starting to use them for military stuff too… PS: I think you forgot to put the Harry Potter tag in the new book club post, it's not showing up when I apply the filter. Would it be possible to add it without redoing the post?

Badger Kat

The memory spell that Lockhart would’ve done to others would not be as damaging as what happened to him, I don’t think. Ron’s broken wand malfunctioning is what caused the damage to Lockhart’s memory to be so devastating. Memory modification can be done more gently than that where just the memory of a specific thing would’ve been taken. It is still incredibly intrusive to modify someone’s memory, but those that Lockhart assaulted in this way would not necessarily have had their entire memory wiped and ended up in a permanent damage ward.

Dani Phantom

i just have to say i’m so excited the full cast audiobook for this will be out soon. i CANNOT WAIT to follow along with them from here on out for the book clubs. i know it’s been recommended so many times but they’re very worth it veggie!

Alex Hopps

I dont know that sid viscous story, but my nerdiness forces me to point out he was the bssist in the sex pistols not the drummer. BUT he wasnt really the bassist, he was more the top of the pops fake bassist who was there for image and could hardly play the thing. The actual bass was played by glen matlock who played in various otherr groups including the faces with rod Stewart ( sorry im a total music nerd especially for punk rock)

Garry (Not Jerry)

AI is VERY good at some things, but specific details in books and movies is not one of them. If you tell it to “look it up” it will actually search the web for you and likely give a better answer.

one of my favourite chocolate bars is the Cadburys Caramel. Can you remember the bunny in the tv commercials? Voiced by the lovely Professor Sprout actress

I feel like what I’m about to say is going to come across as rude and I want you to know I REALLY don’t mean it to be. To me, I don’t care one way or the other if you do one chapter or you do two at a time. Mostly because the video is going to be about the same length either way. That being said, you seemed exhausted and a little bit annoyed this video and that’s not what I want this experience to be for you. Yes we are paying for a service, but it’s YOUR service so, at least in my opinion, do it however you want. If someone doesn’t like it, they can stop being a patron. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Personally, I want you to do what is best for YOU in these videos because your enjoyment and experience of these wonderful books is what I’m paying to see.

Grace

Commenting a bit late but I think the video came out well Veggie! You talked about really speed running through the comments at the end BUT honestly, commenters often repeat what has already been said and a lot of the comments in the book club were talking about the same things. So I don't think it's a big deal that you go through some comments faster when they're talking about things you've already dove into. I feel like you should have this approach in future book clubs as well cause it makes sense, although I understand you probably want to give every comment the same amount of attention.

Thanks for the shout out in the vid Veggie about the 70's sitcoms! I haven't been on my Patreons much this month, so only just saw you got back to me with your score! You did better than me anyway, and there is plenty more quizzes on that channel of 70's and 80's shows and theme tunes for your perusal, when you have time! Cadbury's Caramel. Fun fact, I dunno if you remember the Cadbury's Bunny? Well she was voiced by Miriam Margolyes, who plays Professor Sprout in these Harry Potter films! She was going to be a member of the Monty Python team too originally, but John Cleese (also a link to the films of course) and Graham Chapman, were beastly to her apparently, which Eric Idle backed up in a recent interview. He doesn't have any time for Cleese either these days it seems. Miriam was never one to bite her tongue, so probably spoke a few home truths to them also. Shirley Henderson, who you mention in the tourettes film and who plays Moaning Myrtle, is such a versatile actress. She also voices, amazingly, Babu Frik in the Star Wars sequels - the greatest character in all Star Wars! And we'll see him again in the upcoming Mando & Grogu film, which I can't wait for! We do have a version of the scene where Dumbledore and Harry clash in the film. Here its through the Portkey, in the film, due to Harry being constantly angry and frustrated, he shouts at Dumbledore "LOOK AT ME!!!", which works in a different way. Of course this is a section of the book filled with dread, and you can feel the pain of the Weasley kids, waiting all night for information as to whether or not their father will live. I feel for Harry so much here and later though; he feels ashamed, even though he is the one to alarm everyone that will end up saving Arthur's life. He feels tainted, dirty, and believes he doesn't deserve to be there, inflicting his presence on the Weasley's as they go through this; and he blames himself for all of it. And I don't think its self-pity at all; he just thinks with everything he's been through, that he's going mad. Its moments like these, where we see how much Harry suffers with this curse of being connected to Voldemort; and it just increases even more throughout the story. Dumbledore, as Headmaster's first duty, is to his students; so Umbridge can't really do or say anything about that, that the Weasley kids are out of the school. It does look a bit more suss, that Harry is gone too, I agree; yet Dumbledore is looking out for him also by sending him back to Grimmauld Place - Umbridge be damned. The mission in Hogwarts Legacy where you take the Polyjuice Potion and become Phineas, is the best and most fun mission in the game. He is a bit different to Painting Phineas, but he retains that sarcastic wit, even if he himself is a bit of a "dolt" in the game! Yeah I have no issue here with Hermione giving Kreacher a quilt for Xmas, not that he'd accept it, but it doesn't have the same connotations here, as to what she is trying to do with the Hogwarts House Elves. As to the joke about Kreacher dying in a cupboard someplace, and not having Harry's thoughts on it, or whether he laughs or not; I just think he feels he has more on his plate, than bothering about the needs or not, of House Elves. He is not prejudiced, he would want them to be free for themselves, sure - he sets Dobby free after all; but he also feels, I'd say, that Hermione's answer isn't right either. Something comes of this later, which is a great moment anyway; so we can discuss that when it happens. I agree about having a bit of empathy towards Lockhart here still struggling with his memory. Sure, as you say Veggie, he has done this to others and got a piece of his own "medicine" inflicted back upon him; yet memory loss is no laughing matter, it strips people of their own identities, no matter if they brought it on themselves or not. Don't use AI for search. ALWAYS block it, or use another website where they disable the AI search. Its job is to spread disinformation, DO NOT USE IT. Don't be a sheep Veggie. Neville's granny is indeed awesome. She is one of those types, thats sure a bit strict and talks down a bit to Neville; but she will be there for him and be the strong one, as his parents can't be due to their afflictions. She isn't also sad about it either, she is proud of them, and its a very old school approach to these type of serious incidents inflicted upon family members. We'll hear from her again too, she is great. Out of all the scenes in the books though, this is always the hardest for me to get through. You can feel Neville's grief and pain, and he is embarrassed to share it with his friends in case they'll mock him for it (again, like Harry earlier in this chapter, thinking the worst). Yet there is a determination behind all that he hides himself behind; that he also has pride in his parents that they stood up for what's right and it cost them everything. His parents and grandmother have boundless courage, he will find that in himself too some day soon. So whilst the last section is incredibly sad and moving, where he keeps the sweetie wrapper; it also shows that he will stand up for himself one day also and become a Longbottom and Gryffindor to be proud of.

Ziro the Hutt

Indeed. Put some cheddar cheese through them as well (of course these ruddy vegans wouldn't have any of that either), and its delightful. Maybe even a dash of mustard to give it a bit of kick also. Lovely stuff.

I'll be honest. I use AI to help me improve my home work and school papers, not word for word, but just to help me make things sounds more professional. However, I would not trust it for car repair! Too many makes and models.

I love Streets of Whiterun! Please keep it in! And Secunda maybe if you get tired of it ;) Edit: never apologise for your British humor. Half the fun of it is the confusion!
