The most philosophical episode. I love how the guru's explanation cuts to Toph metalbending for the first time. The timing and the shots are masterful. About the "letting go" thing, I'm pretty sure it means that Aang has to put the world, his duties, above any selfish things like relationships, not that he can't have any. He can have a loved one, but when faced with a difficult choice he should be able to sacrifice them for the greater good. Which is a lot to ask from a traumatised child!

Yeah you have definitely raisesd metal bending as a potential possibility a long time ago, i remember being excited for this reveal

This episode opened my eyes as a kid

I feel confident in claiming that a lot of us internally screamed when you raised the possibility of metal bending forever ago! It was so hard not to geek out about it in the comments!!! But yeah, this show really pushes the limits of its own magic system. They truly think hard about the question "if that thing is possible, how can that possibly be applicable in other situations?" We had that with the vine benders in the swamp (bending the water in the vines), the sand benders, lightning bending, and now Toph inventing metal bending. It really tickles the brain and makes you wonder about other possibilites

Sokka and his dad was so wholesome I loved their scenes, toph was absolutely incredible and is the greatest earth bender ever!

Guru Pathik explained how it works, though it's kind of hard to catch. So when you see Toph use her seismic sense, she is finding the impureties inside the metal. Meaning the pieces of earth within the metal, and that is what she was bending, she was able to discover it due to her seismic sense.

The "chakras" discussed in this episode are based on a real spiritual belief system present in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is particularly focused on in Kundalini Yoga.

1. We have not only an Empire Strikes Back situation here, but also a Revenge of the Sith callback. When Pathik tells Aang to "let go", what he means is the possessive attitude that everyone deals with one way or another when it comes to love. He's not saying that experiencing love is bad, there is a heart chakra after all, but there is a way to love without being attached and letting negative outcomes cloud your mood, or literal energy in Aang's case. It's the same fear of loss and greedy attachment sinkhole that leads to Anakin Skywalker's fall. 2. Notice the difference in how Hakoda treats Sokka versus how Ozai treats Zuko. "You don't have to prove anything to me", "I know you're a great warrior already". Good parents make all the difference.

Did you notice that the eastern air temple (the one from this episode) is the one in the image you always put in these Avatar posts?

VeggieGamer

I half did, but when I started the show I asked if this was a place, and everyone kindly said no, for zero spoilers! XD So it is really cool to now realise it IS a place and everyone was being awesome with not giving info! :)

Rold

Crazy how much pure CINEMA they squeeze in such short episodes

jolt45

Yes, it is similar to the swamp people bending water within vines but way more difficult preseumably.

Ruins of Wonderland

I love how you said you're not meant to watch a show like you're trying to defeat it. It absolutely can ruin reactions, channels or in person with loved ones even, when they're trying to "beat" the answers or mysteries. You have a lovely balance between picking up details and not trying to jump the gun. This episode, man oh man, just beautiful and so, so major. There's so much to unpack in it. Man no matter how many times I've seen it this series has always impressed me. I know, we keep saying it, but it really does JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER 😂 I'm so freakin excited to see your reaction to this finale and the last book. ALSO so surprised you didn't say anything about the onion-banana juice! It's finally VEGAN! 🤣🤣

Attachments are forbidden...is Aang a Jedi, or a primitive email service?

Madikuma95

I hadn't realized how 'Empire Strikes Back' this episode is until you said it but I can totally see the parallels!

Toph is absolutely amazing. She probably is the most powerful earthbender of all time, excluding avatars. I personally have always blamed Aang and the crew for Azula learning about the invasion from the Earth King. They should have made sure it was actually the real Kyoshi Warriors before vouching for them.

Diego Zenhäusern

True! But it is also believable they are still just kids and to pure hearted to even entertain the idea something could have happened to Suki😢

loftypenalty91

Fair enough. They are a bunch of kids.

Rey's Got Plans

No pressure but if Korra comes out bebefore my birthday in September I'll be sure to buy the year in advance as a huge thank you and gift to myself 🥰
