-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it is safe to say this episode blew my mind! XD But WHAT a great idea to give our antagonists a soul searching episode! Amazing!

And I just can't believe we FINALLY met Ruon-Jian and Chan!!

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

Probably the best "beach episode" ever made!

This episode is a stand-out amongst a lot of the fan-base. It truly is a special kind of decision that the writers took to give all of the antagonists a backstory episode that shows more context about who they are and how they got to the points they are all at now, along with how their worldviews have been shaped. In particular, I think the best thing about this episode isn't even the bits about Zuko, but rather Azula. This episode portrays her in a way that almost makes you pity her, but never quite goes far enough to make you think "hold on, is Azula actually a villain, or just misunderstood?". They keep it clear that Azula IS inherently a bad person, and are able to show that even a character like that still has human qualities to her. We all have imperfections, flaws and insecurities, but it's how we choose to deal with those struggles that show who we truly are; I think this episode illustrates that point beautifully.

Ive not watched buffy on the channel but i love that hoodie. Such a creepy episode that was

Everyone always assumes this is meant to be a filler episode, and nothing could be further than the truth. We learns o much and it expands the character backstories so much! Not to mention the metal guy attacking the group + them learning someone ELSE is after them now as well. Amazing reaction Veggie! Always the highlight of my Monday =)

Love this episode so much too, we get to learn so much about all the baddies. In the picture with iroh holding a baby, I think thats baby zuko and lu tan is the boy playing in the sand. It shows even when he was little iroh loved his nephew and spent time with him, all the pictures and flashes of zuko with his father theres no happiness, but there is clear happiness in the image of iroh with him, just love that so much. Book 3 always makes me miss iroh cuz hes just not able to be in it enough

Cordelia in "Reptile Boy".

Oooh! That is probably what I was thinking!!

Just a clarification on the scene from Django. While Leo did really cut his hand open, they stopped filming in between that scene and the end of the scene where he wipes his hand on Kerry Washington’s face. So that scene they’re using fake blood. It would’ve been SUPER problematic and probably illegal if he smeared his real blood on her face.

VeggieGamer

Thanks Eric! That makes a lot more sense! XD

Tim H.

this is one of the episodes that made this one of the best animes even tho its a cartoon

Veggie, your ATLA reactions are absolutely the highlight of my Monday! They really give me something to look forward to after a hard day of work. Thanks as always for your wonderful videos.

Fun Fact: Zuko and Katara are the only bullies who call poor Ty-Lee a “circus freak”! Zuko said that in this episode and Katara called her that in The Drill episode.

In my opinion, when Azula says to Mai: "You had a controlling mother and if certain expectations weren't met you were shut down" is her projecting her feelings of her own mother. Azula makes a lot of subtle remarks during that scene that say A LOT about her character.

mizu

a small detail that often goes unnoticed is how skinny zuko has gotten over the course of “zuko alone” compare him to the beginning of the story and when he takes his robe off

That's where my brain went as well!

"My mother thought I'm a monster... I mean, it's true, but it still hurts!" cracks me up everytime! Such a perfect delivery by Grey Griffin!!! Right now I'm also watching a therapist watching Avatar for the first time and I can't wait for him to get to that episode. Everything in it is just fodder for him to analyze what is going on in their minds and how they got where they are (also, will he agree with their own assessment?), but especially that line? I feel like you can talk about just that one line for an hour!

Lukas

Ty-Lee is actively fighting with Katara (or trying to, in that particular scene). It's not bullying to say some slightly mean things to what is essentially an opponent in a genocidal war. It's also not bullying to be emotionally loaded and lash out once. Bullying requires a pattern of a weaker victim being attacked for the fun of it.

Stan Flamey

The baby in the flashback with iroh is actually zuko. The older kid is lu ten, irohs kid and zukos cousin. Iroh was always more of a father to zuko than ozai

Madikuma95

I love a good villain episode. XD It's cool seeing this new side of Azula! On the battlefield she's in her element, but when it comes to normal teen girl things she just doesn't know what to do.

STAYoung

I guess we can change "the show only gets better from here" to "the show only gets even more fever-dream from here" (especially with one episode in my mind). A great character episode and hilarious too. A little easter egg, but Chan was actually foreshadowed in the first episode of this Season with "Admiral Chan is on leave" said by one of the fire nation sailors. Also all your theories about women in the Fire Nation military are great

Embran

Which means the girls would have either threw themselves at him or fainted for comedic effect when seeing Zuko´s body first season? ^^

Diego Zenhäusern

Uhh, that sounds interesting. Whats the reactor called? I might have to check that one out as well.🤔😊

Off the Script Therapy. On youtube he is getting to the end of book 2, on patreon he just started Korra a couple of weeks ago. I'm actually watching both simultaniously. I could binge his Avatar on patreon, but I kinda like the weekly thing XD I'm not as harsh on Korra as many Avatar fans, but I actually got a new appreciation for the characters through his reaction!

itz_Cherise

Thanks, it wasn't a serious comment about bullying, just a little joke about characters who said the same thing.

Logical Dreamer

Say what you want about this episode, but I lowkey love it.
