Perfect summary in the description! There was a reason why we told you to do it in one go. Pay attentions to the details while you're editing. Your questions will be answered. And I at least agree with you on "Nightmares & Daydreams" and "Avatar Day". Enjoy your weekend!

Amazing episode so much happening, so much lore! The Zuko stuff is so heavy and its so nice to see his progression. I really like the writers' choice to have Zuko change after he gets everything he ever thought he wanted. Zuko turning his back on his father because he realizes how toxic it all is and how horrible the fire nation is is so much more powerful than if he had changed back in season 2 because he had no hope of going back. Also super cute that it seems like Mai is what he finds hardest to leave. But also Veggie when you said 'and to grow a moustache???' in response to seeing Haru I genuinely burst out laughing. Fun fact Sokka actually directly mentions that Haru is growing in a moustache during his rambling speech right before his dad cuts him off.

Aang is from the Southern Air Temple, that’s why when he runs away, he ends up in South Pole waters- near the Southern Water Tribe. The Gaang meets Teo and his father the Mechanist at the Northern Air Temple, just before they arrive in the Northern Water Tribe. Guru Pathik is atthe Eastern Air Temple, which is near/in the Earth Kingdom- not too crazy for Aang to travel to while staying in Ba Sing Se. Now they head to the Western Air Temple, near/in the Fire Nation- a close enough place to retreat following the failed invasion of the Fire Nation Capital city.

These should have been called "the day of black sun: everyone is here." and Haru's dads voice actor also voiced Gantu from Lilo & Stitch :)

Faces from the beginning returning is something SO many shows and games are missing

jolt45

I'm pretty sure Ming isn't the one that delivered the scroll for Iroh. My guess is that it was an unnamed White Lotus member.

Cinnamon troll

There it is. Zuko confronting his father is my favourite scene in the entire show. Like you said, it's simply perfect and gives me chills every single time. "It was cruel , and wrong." the amount of self-reflection and emotional work it took to state a fact so obvious to a mentally healthy person. So bittersweet.

PumpkinSparks

I think it actually worked out that this upload is "late". Since it is a 2-parter and we would have to wait an extra week anyways for the next episode, this way it's not that long a wait ;) The detail that Azula can lie to Toph is so fascinating. Toph just shrugs it off and it's kinda played for laughs, but the implications to that are enormous. When you lie your body has a physical reaction (faster heartbeat, temperature rising, sweating, eye darting, etc) and depending on the person and the circumstances those will be more or less obvious. It's also something you can train not to exhibit as much. But sociopaths don't have those symptoms, lying comes natural to them. Azula with her zero empathy and her Toph-fooling lying abilities is a true sociopath!

Alex Hopps

I believe the scene with iroh and zuko beneath lake laugi was much more powerful personally but this one is definitely right up there

James McCarthy

Woo epic two parter, love all the inventions in this one but all seem curtsy of sokka and the inventor the firenation has the monopoly on inventions and progress but that is because the other nations are stuck in the past while the fire nation is obsessed with pushing forward. Goes to show the other nations could do similiar if they were more open to change the nations really would be better working together

James McCarthy

It is a difficult decision and adds a lot to the tragedy of Aang that they lost again. But they made the right call, they have no chance against Ozai he would have turned them to dust. Bare in mind they struggle to fight Azula and she is a young teen but was so confident and happy with telling them where to find Ozai once he has his powers back since there is no doubt in her mind he could crush them. We do not see much of Ozai's power but notice Iroh and Azula both take time charging lightning but Ozai instantly dual cast lightning as soon as the sun was available again. As we have seen in this show lighting is death there is no resisting if it hits you.

James McCarthy

While i would say Ozai is very evil and people bring up Azula being evil only the result of trauma being raised by him it is worth noting that Ozai's father Azzulon seems to have been even worse so Ozai's personality is likely also due to consistent terrible parenting. Ozai's father ordered him to kill Zuko his own son just to teach Ozai a lesson. That is horrifically messed up to do to your son but even worse the callous emptiness towards your grandson which you see as a tool to discipline your son's ambition by dying. Weirdly Sozin is immensly chill compared to his son and grandson.

James McCarthy

Yeah i think because it is technically a childrens show they gloss over it but definitely sociopathic tendencies, makes her a great villain though (:

Tower control, we have hit PEAK. Please fasten your seatbelts and remain in an upright position until landing.

Embran

The only time a Blind joke made as a jab, as expected by Azula. And it shows the only time Toph not giving an ironic retort, instead actual anger.

Ruins of Wonderland

I waited til now to watch so I could pretend I got a PERFECT birthday surprise from Veggie 😂😂 what a treat, as usual👌💜💜

Damn this is some peak Avatar. I'll try and condense my comment but I haven't seen a lot of my opinions aired in the comment section already. I was wondering what you were expecting from the invasion being only halfway through the season. It's a testament to the show that you figured it wasn't unrealistic that half a season would be an epilogue tying up all the loose ends. Seeing you organically piece things together was better than asking earlier and ruining the story. Great reaction to the cast of Books 1 and 2 returning, especially The Boulder. BTW Serena Williams plays Ming, the prison guard who Iroh told not to come to school today. You connecting the dots between The Mechanist returning, to remembering his incredible engineering, to remembering the balloons, to "maybe we'll see 'em here", to unfortunately being right. As you said, it's good to see that the other nations have modernised too, not just the Fire Nation. The Fire Nation have the industrial advantage with their bending but the water torpedoes and earth tanks let you know that everyone has adapted. I wonder if Sokka has said the most "yip yips" in the show? He started in episode 1 anti-Appa, then sceptical he could actually fly but ultimately the one to get him airborne to save Aang. Real dad who didn't want a family pet energy. Also, little thing, but when did the Gaang learn Azula's name? She and her trio started as "those three girls from Omashu" but did they learn it off camera while they were in the Fire Nation or did they say it last Book? CHARGE! Great battle tactics on display instead of the usual mass wave assault we see in media but I wonder how things would have looked like if the Fire Nation wasn't prepared for this. If Azula hadn't overthrown the Earth Kingdom it probably would have been two massive armies battling it out waiting for the eclipse to do the massive attack. Guess we all know what Veggie means if he ever says he's "communing with nature" You seem excited when Zuko opened the door to meet his dad, just a hunch. Given what Ozai did to Zuko, do you think Aang would be ready for that? There was something you said in your analysis after the reaction that I won't spoil but made me laugh and applaud. You'll find out soon

VeggieGamer

Oh wow, this is amazing of you, Ruins! Thank you!! I don't know if they have been snapped up yet, but if they aren't it may be also mentioning it on the previous episode (which is currently still free to view) as only people that have pledged can see this comment, I believe (I could be wrong)

felipeluzz

On your question about if the gaang knew that Azula knew of their plans or not, they didn't, but they could. The earth king discussed the plans with her when she was disguised as a kyoshi warrior. He never told the gaang this on-screen, but they did rescue him at the end of book 2, so there was plenty of time for him to have shared the news and warned the gaang. Then again, he is an imbecile do maybe he didn't even connect the dots that those were fake kyoshi warriors (Azula in disguise) even after ba-sing se fell.

Margarita Pizza

Zuko's baby face turn is so satisfying because it is so EARNED! It would have been unrealistic if he had permanently changed last season. He had to get everything he wanted to realize how hollow it was. And his growth comes from within; it isn't just Iroh's influence. Iroh in season 2 was basically encouraging Zuko to forget the war and his place in it. But Zuko decides to confront his father and help Aang. Then, he redirects the lighting, which Iroh said "is not fueled by rage or emotion" and requires "peace of mind". Zuko, who has always been so angry, finally achieves peace of mind when he accepts the truth and takes real responsibility.

hopefulSith

I will say, it's not just non-sociopaths that are "divergent" in those symptoms. Toph's lie detecting is fun in the show but not really realistic in terms of how it work. When people lie, there can be a physical reaction, but that reaction isn't always the same for people, and it's not only sociopaths that lack such a reaction. On top of that, a lot of people have such a reaction even when they're telling the truth. Really, what toph is measuring is the degree of nervousness. That's the same thing a polygraph tests. Some people don't get nervous lying, and being a sociopath can definitely be a reason for that. But there are other reasons. And some people get nervous from the idea that somebody is checking if they're lying. This is why Polygraphs are inadmissible in court (afaik everywhere?)

hopefulSith

Oops I didn't mean to send yet. I wanted to add hope I don't come across too argumentative, this is just a topic that I happen to know much about and be fascinated by. Anyway, getting sidetracked aside... Your comment definitely outlines and interesting possibility, and I hope I wasn't too know-it-all, and I hope you have a lovely day :)

PumpkinSparks

Oh, no worries! For one, even if I wouldn't agree with you, that didn't feel argumentative or rude or anything to me. Just a very polite way of adding to the discussion. At least that's how it came across to me. But I also know that I oversimplified. There are a lot of other reasons why I think Azula is a true sociopath (as far as I'm aware that isn't a hot take either...), the lying thing is just one aspect to that argument. And yeah, there are a lot of kinds of people and situations where Tophs lie detection wouldn't work. I believe lie detectors have like a 50% accuracy because of these factors - it's just as effective as just talking to them in person and trying to suss out if they're lying. Funnily enough, someone like me with severe social anxiety would probably also be able to fool Toph. Just being confronted with others would make me so nervous, that lying wouldn't spike XD

Logical Dreamer

I genuinely can't wait for the next episode...and I'm going to say that until the finale. lol Zuko standing up to his father was so earned. So good!

Jake M

Finally! I've been waiting for Zuko to turn face (I think I got the right one?) ever since Aang was unable to find a fire master XD but will they even let him join the gang!?

Maia Brodsky

Regarding the characters aging - I recommend going back and listening to Aang in Book 1. The VA was an adolescent, and his voice in Book 3 is drastically different compared to Book 1, but the change is so gradual due to his natural aging that you don't really notice how different he sounds until you go back and listen. Also, I think everyone from the main Aang Gang has grown taller, except maybe Toph, but we haven't known her as long.

Joseph_Darke7

guru Pathik was at the Eastern air temple, the western temple has yet to be seen

Lukas

If Azulon ordering Ozai to kill Zuko as punishment for suggesting to betray Iroh is your only "proof" of Azulon being a particularly bad parent, I'm not sure you have much there. And that is the only detail I'm aware of that we get of him in this show. It's a motiv as old as the bible to ask a father to kill/sacrifice his son. And at least in the biblical original there was no actual danger to the son. It was only a way to see how far the father (Abraham in that case) would go. It's not clear from what we've been shown whether Azulon actually intended for Zuko to die or not, but I at least don't think it all too likely. If Azulon had been anything like Ozai and Azula, he'd probably have agreed to Ozai's plan, if not outright come up with it himself. But he chose to be honourable and not betray Iroh. Based on that, he doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who'd deliberately burn half of his son's face off for speaking out of turn, much less to actually want his grandchild dead. He clearly wasn't a great guy for the rest of the world, as it was likely under his rule that the southern tribe was continually raided and deprived of benders (e.g. Hama's bloodbending story). But even there, he seemed to focus on ending the war he inherited from his father, by taking away the "enemy's" strongest fighters and trying to take down their strongest defences (Ba Sing Se breached by Iroh). Sozin chose a genocide (Airbenders) and Ozai ... well, we'll get to that. But we know from Roku's warnings in Book 1 that it won't be good. Inbetween those two Azulon really seems to be somewhat better, both as a parent and as a monach.

Lukas

Arguably, needing two hands to produce similar lightning to what others produce with one hand (and which importantly Zuko is able to receive and return with one hand each) doesn't seem to be much of a feat. If anything it explains how / why seems to be faster than Azula and Iroh. And where please have we "seen in this show light[n]ing is death"? It's just as much a natural element as any other, not some magic "Avada Kedavra" death spell. In fact we know it can be redirected. A shard of ice or rock hitting you in the right (or wrong) place is easily as deadly, and I have not seen a human yet that works without air/oxygen.

Lukas

Small point, but the peace of mind thing is about *creating* lightning, not redirecting it.

Lukas

Sorry, but that sounds like some pretty bad victim blaming. The other nations could do a lot better if they had hundreds of firebenders to easily work with fire and heat. Fire was a key driver in industrial revolutions, from the first cooked meat all the way down to mass steel production and (mobile) engines. And while the other nations certainly make use of fire, it's much easier to use and control when you can bend it. And let's not forget: Both our IRL industrialization and the firenation in the show had a harsh toll on nature and the "small people". The capital sure is a nice city, but that fishing village in "The painted lady" was firenation as well. Did they seem to do "better" due to the firenations "progress"? All nations are somewhat stuck in their own traditions that are not always helpful, and may become less so as the world around them changes (after all, traditions don't just "happen", they start because they make some sense at that point. None of the other nation's traditions seem to have such a negative and long-lasting effect on others, though, as the firenation's tradition of "progress" and "sharing it with the rest of the world".
