14:30 - Chest-size jokes are a common trope in Anime. That's why Frieren commented on having the same diets. Not particularly tasteful, but luckily Frieren doesn't make it a repeating joke.

Indeed, it's... not my favorite. Fortunately the show has plenty of other character gags and doesn't get hung up on that sort of thing. I only noticed the joke on recognition of the trope, so it's relatively unobtrusive compared to... certain other shows that can't seem to think of anything else.

16:30 Correct, you can read "mana" as essentially being "magical energy," and saying someone is "out of mana" is like saying they're "out of magical stamina." The term "mana" is one of those genre-legacy terms that comes from fantasy settings in games, shows, and probably a number of books too. I *believe* it first appeared in a tabletop RPG, borrowed from a polynesian language where it meant something like "spirit." (There's a great video on YouTube diving into the term's origins, but it's been a while since I watched it 😅). Through a long history of getting adopted under various fictional magic systems, it's become a standard term for magic energy in fantasy settings, just as much as elves and dwarves have become standard races thanks to authors like Tolkien and his derivatives.

Episode 1 grabbed me emotionally. This one, Episode 3, is what grabbed me *intellectually.* I love it when fantasy doesn't pretend that its world is in some kind of technological stasis. If a world has scholars that investigate magic, there *will* be progress made and shared, and the bout with Qual was a great way to introduce that idea. It simultaneously introduces ideas of offensive and defensive magic, tradeoffs in mana cost, magic as a communal study amongst humans, *and* the idea of time as progress. Cuz that's the thing, right? It's not just "they did a cool thing in this fantasy setting with magic scientists" or whatever -- this is yet again an expression of Frieren's major themes of time, memory, and legacy. It's a mechanic of the show's action scenes, yes, but it's *also* relevant to the deeper ideas the story wants to explore with its themes. That kind of resonance between action and themes is *so* tasty!

10:50 Eisen says his favorite food is sour grapes. In the previous episode Fern mentions that Frieren learned a spell to turn sweet grapes into sour ones.

The countdown continues 11 to go 🩵🩵🩵

IMHO, I think the joke was put there to show that despite being so old Frieren still has a little bit of a immature and vain side to her. Even though it's mostly overshadowed up by how stoic she comes off as being for the most part.

Vincent

My rule is 1 intro/outro per session of episodes but frieren's themes are magnificent so i wouldnt hate seeing it every time Did you catch that Eisen's fav food is sour grapes and one of the examples that Fern used as random spells Frieren collects is a spell to turn grapes sour?

GhostPhil

Yeah basically as an Elf she still is a bit immature. And yes Anime in general has some jokes and fanservice that I often just call "Anime-isms", because it gets so normalised that I don't blink an eye at it anymore ^^

GhostPhil

Qual really was on another level. The fact he figured out the defense spell this quickly is frightening.

Daniel Pitts

The immaturity does fit, but the joke still feels out of place because Frieren never shows any other kind of vanity. Either way, it’s not a huge deal, my only intention was to inform about the trope, but I let my personal judgment slip in.

About Mana: it’s another common thing in a lot of fantasy anime. Usually it’s some sort of renewable energy that some/all people have that gets expended when magic is used, and slowly replenishes over time. Many shows just take for granted that the basic idea of mana is enough, and don’t try to explain it in any detail.

Dingo

Sour grapes, was his favorite. SH found and learned a spell just to make them for him. She didn't realize it then but she started to be more apart of the people around her and having an effect on her. She starts to realize thru this journey how much she grew from them

As you progress in your exploration of anime you will see recurring uses of seasons and their attributes, i.e. winter and snow, spring and sakura blossoms, fall with leaves fallng and summer with beaches. Also you'll see the time of day, mostly the late afternoon into evening, golden hour as its called. The scene is awash with golden hues. Enjoy your ride.

I'm going to cry again 🥹 I know I pick up on this w the grapes and it connected mid-ep somewhere for me as I reacted, might be the next ep... But these little spells that Fern is like what are we doing here, they have so much meaning in terms of who Frieren is as a person and what is really valuable in our lives. I know I love remembering the littlest, 'insignificant' things about my friends and family.. bc it shows how much I see them, and the same goes for them with me. It is almost more meaningful when someone remembers a random, tiny fact about me versus this major life event that everyone knows in my life, you know?

aloekayeANIME

I agree, this was incredibly thought-provoking for me and caused me to think about it the rest of the night. I hadn't seen a portrayal like this before in a show I don't think. I really appreciate how the writers explore so many different themes like this.

Someone in another comment asked this, I think it clicks for me in the next reaction maybe (ep 4)? Even watching back as I'm editing episodes I'm like I didn't even notice this detail the first time!! I could watch this show over so many times and find something totally different each time, at different stages of my own life too

I knew about this trope, but at the time it didn't occur in my mind. It's funny tho I saw this comment in the last few days, and then I went back through editing ep 3 frieren for YT, I saw that at the end of that scene they even show these stacked rocks that look like a woman's chest which was funny to me now that I got the joke. So I will say, super nuanced even in how they do that type of joke. Had to come back and comment
