Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

"Have you ever cried..." Yeah, only like every episode and every opening and every ending lmaoo

HalcyonSerenade

Seriously, "Anytime, Anywhere" may as well be describing the times and places that Frieren will cause me to shed tears

Not Eric Talbott

Everyone here knew it was coming and we were all waiting for your reaction. I'm so glad it wasn't spoiled.

HalcyonSerenade

It should be noted that the word "highway" has been used for high-traffic public roadways since at least the 12th century (1100s) so its usage is period-appropriate still for a medieval fantasy setting 😅

Cronshaw

So the scene right in the beginning when they are all sitting together is really thematically important but subtle. First you get Stark agreeing with Himmel that the bodies of the dead should be treated with respect. Parallels between Stark and Himmel are a really common thing in the show if you look for them. Then you see a quick soundless flashback of when Aura said "but Himmel is long gone" and then Frieren says "that's a normal reaction." What she means is it's a human reaction, as opposed to a demon's reaction to the dead, like Aura's. Frieren is mostly speaking to herself here; confirming that Himmel and now Stark and Fern's views are right and good.

"Its the little things" definitely is a strong theme through this series. About how a moment of kindness, or sharing in prayer, or taking care of someone can have huge impacts on their future and how they are as people. Frieren mentioned not getting to know Himmel after he passed away, and yet every episode she reflects on a life-lesson/experience from her time with the hero, and how it affects her future (now) behaviour. All wrapped up in music that transports storytelling to higher levels. You definitely chose a doozy as your first time into anime.

WanderingBecauseLostLol

We don't know how old Kraft is, but he has the beginnings of "aging" lines on his face, which generally starts in the late 30s in humans, so maybe whatever that equivalent would be for elves 😅. Frieren, despite being over 1000 years old, had Fern saying she could be her older sister when she was 16, so Frieren could be looking as young as 15 to humans in their world. Maybe it's a hint of Kraft being more than twice her age?

HalcyonSerenade

The finishing line "I'm whispering a lullaby for you to come back home" got me the first time I ever heard it, and it has gotten me every single time I've listened to it afterwards 🥲

EHelström

Lol. "A heads up would have been nice." When talking about episode 10.

HalcyonSerenade

Usually the little "end whisperings" are just previews for the next episode -- the voices are usually clips of voice lines we're going to see next time. I personally don't find "next time" hooks very useful because I like to be surprised by what the next episode has in store, and I don't really need the anticipation fuel to keep me hooked or anything... like, you've already got me, I'm gonna watch the next one already, so no need to give me breadcrumbs and spoil dinner 😅 But to each their own, just so long as their decision is informed 🤷‍♂️

Travis

cant wait to see your reaction to the upcoming episodes haha

Travis

The Frieren ED might be the only ED to where i read the lyrics, I get sadder cuz it relates so much to the show.

Silver

Big fan of ASSC, glad to see you support mental health.

george

i don’t know if you’ve been told this already but season 3 of frieren comes out next year in october

gram

I love next S1E12 very much, enjoy!

aloekayeANIME

This is so true 🥲 Even when ppl comment new things I didn't see before (ie I just posted S1E4 on YT and someone said 'did you notice Flamme's earrings?' and once I saw that those are the earrings Frieren wears now... and then saw Flamme's va passed away in 2024...) it's just so easy for me to start tearing up on the spot. This show stays with you into your life 🤍💫

aloekayeANIME

I truly had NO idea lol I had to log off for the night it was so insane to me... I was just stunned trying not to think about it when I was in bed fr hahaha I know you guys have heard me say this, but I am trying to stay as genuine/uninformed as possible which is hard sometimes bc I want to look up everything about the shows, but I know I can do that once I finish and you guys have my back in the comments to keep me informed ✨💫 I WILL however start being better ab looking up pronunciations bc we can't have another Flamme/Ufotable debacle for 10 episodes lol

aloekayeANIME

So happy I have my teachers in the comments 💛✨ I think I was thinking more 'interstate' being interchangeable with highway, but looking it up you're right I actually didn't know that the term 'highways' has been used the past century. Super interesting!! More so than this point tho is kind of the greater theme/what you were discussing in the aloekaye posse chat recently around the 'world-building' term -- the discussion of the term 'highway' in this video was kind of a jumping off point for my brain to be like 'wait yeah what kind of world IS this that we're in, magically/fantastically as well as historically in relation to our world, culturally what plays into the world (Japanese, German, etc.), what are the constraints, what are the possibilities' -- such a fun thing I'm going to put more of a lens on moving forward is the world that is being build in different animes, bc Frieren has deeply immersed me in their world I know that much 🌎🪐💫

Otaku's Finest

I think that's Kraft's question, "And before that?", really details the life span of elves by expressing that one elf can live so many Stories and Human lifespan that cary those stories. If he doesn't know her by the hero story, what was her story before that. Flamme's Student. And before that?

aloekayeANIME

Thank you for this perspective! I think actually in next ep maybe (if I recall) I do start to notice/speak on more of the interwoven parallels between the OG foursome of heros and our current heros, bc you're right there are so many that pop up in all these different ways not just between Eisen+Stark but then Himmel+Stark then Fern/Frieren and Frieren/Himmel and the parallels go on and on... I do remember specifically being confused as we see in this reaction ab when Frieren says "that's a normal reaction" -- I think now how I see it, I know we've seen that demons don't have connectedness amongst each other/with anything, so a human who's passed has no meaning to them. So I suppose like you said Frieren was acknowledging that even though he has passed, Fern and Stark are right/good in their thinking bc as we can see Himmel still has such a profound, lasting impact on Frieren's life and choices even after he's gone, he's in everything that she does to this day ('what would himmel do?')🥹 Lmk if this is how you guys are interpreting this point 🤍

Otaku's Finest

I caught that this time too! Such fantastic writing in Frieren! I'm sure Frieren even feels some kind of eternal creature connection to Aura's statement, and they're words help to reaffirm the intentional belief she shares.

Munnin

I'm glad you rewatched the OP and ED! Although it's definitely not necessary to watch every episode, I feel like the OP and ED are a part of an anime's identity. Kind of like The Office and it's jingle. There are a bunch of anime I can't think or talk about without mentioning the OP.

Vincent

I loved seeing you piece together the parts of the intro that link up to the episodes you watched. The lyrics are really beautiful so im happy to see a full react come back into play. Im sure others have prob said this but the song from the first part of episode 11 was originally supposed to be the ending theme for the 2 hour movie (s1e1-4). I like that they made use of it in the series even though the movie didn't end up happening. I think it fits rather well as the background music for the montage at the end of our time in Granat. The "normal reaction" Frieren refers to while Stark and Fern are praising how well Himmel trained her is about a human reaction to still obeying Himmel's wishes to treat the soldiers bodies with respect vs what Aura said which was basically why do you care what Himmel thinks he's long dead. It's basically highlighting the complete difference between humans and demons. The sure fire way to tell If the character is an elf is if they have those big ears. If so, they are for sure an elf. Did you notice how matter of fact Kraft was when he spoke about Aureole? He says "Aureole, huh? You're traveling to heaven then? Good on you for being so pious." He knows it exists and treats it like they said they were going to Außerst or Granat or Ende. That feels important to me that an elf as old as Kraft treats heaven as a location on the map rather than a mythical possibility. I really want a dreamy jumbo berry special Eisen tattoo. My interpretation of Kraft saying "i mean that we are elves" is that elves live ridiculously long lives. In e7 Frieren asks that one merchant about if the town will be celebrating the party of heroes 100 years from now and he responds "yes, as long as this town still stands". Then she says "how about in a thousand?" and he responds "well, im not sure." Humans don't live that long. Its over 10 times their lifespan. Its like 50 generations of people. Humans dont think in those increments of time but Frieren is over 1000 years old and she has seen this happen before. Flamme the legendary mage was from 1000 years ago and now Frieren thinks she is the only person who remembers her as she was. Most only know her name and the fake books attributed to her. All this to say that elves live many lives. Frieren could have been the killer of Basalt the Throne 1000 years ago and 100 different things between then and now but Flamme told her to live in obscurity so she could kill the demon king. I imagine Kraft was not told the same and has had many heroic deeds over his long life. There is NO amount of crying that is excessive when watching Frieren. Especially considering that the next episode is my favorite episode of the entire series and i go through a pack of tissues everytime I rewatch it so looking forward to Thursday.

TheToweringOTK

I'd love to see you react to Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. It's a single season and the story is excellent. Doesn't get enough love, frankly. And if for any reason you're looking for a show you can watch the dub on, Moribito is a strong contender. Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, and Cowboy Bebop are also strong dubs. They're good either way, of course, but these are a few from that era when the dubs were still worth a damn.

WanderingBecauseLostLol

For pronouncing many things and names in anime the Japanese way, strangely enough they tend to follow the Spanish (ah, aye, ee, oh, oo) pronunciation for vowels pretty consistently when transcribed to our alphabet. Maybe this will help? I don't think most of us care if you don't say something right straight away though 😅

DrakonFirestone

After al lthose emotional episodes I think you would really enjoy anime called "Violet Evergarden", I tink its right up your valley, pls consider watching it - its pretty short but very beautiful and gives much to think about :D

In most fantasy settings, including this show, a monk is like a priest in regards to being part of the clergy. However a monk's adventuring abilities are closer to that of a warrior. They are focused on martial combat even though they do have some minor spell casting abilities in the form of healing/support magic. Whereas a priest in a fantasy setting is considered a dedicated spell caster that is primarily focused on healing/support magic rather than physical combat or offensive magic which is what most mages focus on.

When Frieren said Stark’s and Fern’s response (Himmel telling Frieren to use restraint when fighting the headless puppet soldiers) was a normal reaction, she was comparing it to Aura’s cold heartless response of why hold back since Himmel’s long gone. I think when Kraft was asking Frieren what about before she was in the hero’s party, he was referring to the other 99/100ths of her life. The hero’s journey was only 1/100 so far. Since elves live an extraordinarily long time, Kraft’s like what did you do before 80 years ago?

Not Eric Talbott

Flamme literally means flame so you weren't actually wrong. Frieren=Freezing Fern=Distant Stark=Strong Himmel=Sky/Heaven Eisen=Iron Heiter=Cheerful/Merry/Bright Kraft=Power Flamme=Flame

John Masteller

I second that and cannot recommend it highly enough. Speaking of tearing up, even just hearing the theme song will get me now.

Eric Loesch

Apologizing for tearing up during a Frieren watchalong is so dang funny.

DapperDad

28:14 I feel like that's the value of good storytelling, though. To me, when a good story places you into different perspectives, it's like they can inspire you to reflect on areas of your own life or self (even if the takeaway isn't 1 to 1).

Havbris

A lot of names for characters and places in this anime are German words, if you want to translate their meaning and how they fit.

Robbie Kelsey

Heiter in the flash back knew frieren was suppressing her mana and said it would be good to know incase he had a child that became a mage (aka fern) so it's implied here that he taught fern to suppress her mana like frieren, which would explain back in episode 1 why frieren had a difficult time finding her and she's practically invisible Because fern has been doing it from such a young age it's helped her have extraordinary control of her mana and magic.

AshTechnix

exceptional recommendation... Ep 10 ;-;

In Japan, when people hear the word “highway,” most think of toll expressways. The Japanese term “kaidō,”「街道」 as used by the Count, refers to major land transportation routes and roads that have been in use since ancient times—roads that connect major cities, settlements, shrines, and temples. If you get the chance, I highly recommend checking out the *Freiren* manga. The artwork has a different feel from the anime, which is also great.

GardeninTool

Does that go for lore posting too when it comes to being uninformed? I love talking Frieren lore 😭

BC

Make sure you have the tissues ready for the next one. 😭

aloekayeANIME

For some reason missed the comments under the og one I responded to, so leme respond to all these fun ones -- > @Not Eric Talbott These are all super helpful, I might have to do a mini deep dive into the German connections in an upcoming vid, love me some symbolism and so many ppl have commented on the meanings of Frieren names/proper nouns in relation to German roots. > @WanderingBecauseLostLol I grew up learning Spanish in school so this is good to know, v interesting! I was going to look up more ab Japanese pronunciations when I had some free time but this is a good jumping off point for me to kind of sound out the phonetics. Definitely helps tysm ✨ > @GardeninTool As long as it's not spoilers GIVE ME ALL THE LORE I live for it haha if you can't tell by how much I look at all the comments on here. I love me some lore, you all teach me so much it's so fun 💫

Anthony

Excellent choice for your hairstyle 👍

**Frieren lore and fun tidbits** > "Excluding during the age of mythology, the Goddess of Creation has not shown her face once" Surprisingly, Frieren herself says this despite her not believing in the goddess herself. But she does acknowledge her existence. Its very likely that the Goddess did indeed descend upon the land. Based on her appearance. The goddess was an elf. Does that mean there could be witnesses of the goddess still alive? Was the demon king one of them knowing their lifespan? These questions are not meant to foreshadow. But to promote thoughts about the potential of the world we were given. > In the flashback, Heiter mentions that suppressing ones mana could be useful. Recall to episode 2, where we first meet Fern. That means she has been practicing mana suppression since she began training. And in the montage, you can see Frieren drawing a circle around her. Telling Fern what level her mana should be sustained at. This anime has incredible rewatching power. Tons of little details that initially seem meaningless. Get recontextualized to something even greater. A sign that the author has conviction in their writing.

This anime hit me pretty hard on my first watch. But for some reason the second watch and every watch after hit harder lol. I think it's because of the attachment to the characters and noticing a lot of the smaller things. As a person who has watched anime for nearly 20 years, to me Frieren is genuinely one of the best I've watched in all that time.

meguca

sometimes I think the end song is almost making fun of me when it starts with "and I'm alright" while I'm crying lol

Conzi

I’m not a big cryer, but I started tearing up in episode one of Frieren and basically every episode after. The music, themes, dialogue, and art direction just hits so hard. And yes, the outro hits every time <3

RegorLu

Every time “And you all right?” Me: “I’m not all right….”

Actually, there's proof that they had highways in South America WELL before the Inca - in fact, they were well overtaken by rainforest by the time the Inca even existed as a people by that name, proof we have via satellites / LIDAR / other technologies, that there were literally highways running throughout the Amazon rainforest in ancient times - connecting massive cities made of stone (and obviously wood and the normal stuff) - and they even had elevated highways - as in, they were raised to go over natural formations. In fact, there's definitive proof they also knew of the wheel there, LONG before it's alleged "introduction" - and almost everywhere, far before what you were likely taught in school. I said DEFINITIVE proof - as in, they discovered children's toys buried that were carts, with a hole for an axle - meaning wheels existed, and were commonplace - when conventional history says everyone was too stupid to realize you didn't just have to walk everywhere. Archaeology comes to some really stupid conclusions because of lack of evidence, when human nature is obvious to most humans. Obviously the wheel would have been "invented" the moment some caveman learned to roll a rock. It was DEFINITELY "invented" over and over again, throughout human history. Just a matter of time - and they were far more advanced than mere cavemen a couple/few thousand years ago. Archaeology likes to act like it's high science - but it's actually just natural assumption and human ingenuity. If they had indoor plumbing back then in places like Pompeii and even far more ancient cities, they probably had the wheel hundreds of years prior EVERYWHERE - we just can't PROVE it because it's rare for things to actually survive thousands of years and be recognizable. - I'm passionate about that particular subject, archaeology... I suppose. Ancient history too.
