Season 1, Episode 15 | 'Smells Like Trouble'

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

*The intro is longer on this one, ~6.5 mins 🙂🙃. Since I was sick for my initial reaction to ep 14, I processed that episode much more here in the intro. 💛✨💫

thanks for your reactions, always fun to watch!

Sometimes you definitely ask questions that I know are about to be answered in the next couple episodes (if not in the very next scene 😋) so for those I hope comments continue to not answer and let the story do its thing

Travis

you may have missed it when Frieren was explaining priest magic, but they have a strpng resisrance to curses because of the "blessing of the Goddess".

I love a good rotoscope

EHelström

I'm really looking forward to the next episode. It's my personal favorite.

aloekayeANIME

Oooo you're going to cause me to go down a rabbithole lol this is my first introduction to rotoscoping 🎞️📽️ Where do you guys notice it in this ep?? Just curious

aloekayeANIME

So glad you're here and happy you enjoyed!! 💛🫶💫

bukuwawa

During the dancing. A really good example of it in classic use is the character of Wendy in Peter Pan, the original cartoon from Walt Disney.

bukuwawa

And I just checked, they did not actually use rotoscoping. My bad. It is a pretty old technology.

aloekayeANIME

No literally I feel like this has happened too many times to count lol esp recently. I'm just so curious/think out loud a lot. But tbh I haven't seen any spoilers, you guys have been great, sparking my brain with the lore/conversations without giving me any hints 💛😊 I appreciate it sm I will say too tho, my brother has been a sleuth in here, aka monitoring the comments a bit (he does have the ability to delete anything in here he deems spoiler-esque) so I know he's been checking most of the time before I even check comments myself lol

Just a heads up for when you finally finish season 1. In anime sometimes there are post-credit scenes. With Frieren the very last episode (28) of season 1 has a post credit scene. So when you finally reach episode 28 you should watch that episode until there is nothing left to watch. Lastly, if a season is long enough there will often be a second new intro and outro to denote the mid-way point of the season. Since you've almost hit the mid-way point of this season you'll be in for a treat with the intro and outro with episode 17.

New aloekaye lore dropped: Vedic and buddha scripture enjoyer. The scene with Orden talking about thinking he saw his son when he first laid eyes on Stark made me think of Graf Granat saying he thought his son was coming to see him when Stark broke him out of the chair. Something about those lines of dialogue, so small, just make me tear up. These great men who lost something so precious to them getting to see their children again even for just a moment hits really hard. I also think that the fact that both Orden and Granat's sons looked like Stark and died fighting bravely in battle. Orden says "ill teach you the Orden family sword technique" and when Stark holds the sword he immediately thinks about abandoning his brother at his home. The sword is tied to trauma for him but it keeps coming back into his life. I believe these scenes are subtle foreshadowing for how Stark will become the hero who pulls the sword of the hero and faces down the calamity. Stark kneeling to Fern like Himmel to Frieren last episode is incredible. At the party, Sein looks great with his hair down and Fireren looks great eith her hair up. I never moticed the Sein/Heiter hair/eyes thing and its my 30th time rewatching this series. See you learn something new every time. Regarding character classes, thats a topic i think a lot about and will come up more in the next few episodes.

You can think of priest / cleric magic as divine given by a deity and mage/sage magic as arcane and more book learned. Though, a number of magic systems have that mages need to be born with the ability, too.

Westy

It's understandable to think that, though. It definitely looks like the old Disney rotoscoping. Probably done that way on purpose.

Gabel is lowkey one of my favorite super minor characters.

Billy Dancel

Fern and Stark took a peek at each other in a different light. Don’t you wish we got them looking into each other’s eyes

#Stern The ship is sailing.

Would there be any chance of a Duokaye sitdown for post finale to see you two talk together about the whole experience and what brought about this whole adventure with you making this reaction and his involvement?

Tommy

I thought it was rotoscoped too, I guess it's just 3d. If anyone wants to see some agressive rotoscoping, check out the 1978 Lord of the Rings animation.

Kyle Taggart

Highly suggest the reactors LM Reacts. Two girls and once they get to this episode they lose their minds lol. The animation was beautiful, the music, just chefs kiss. I always tear up at the parallels between Stark and Mut. Also even the name "Mut", it's like how dare you name him that?! then you find out he loves him and shows it, huge sigh of relief.

Kyle Taggart

Also, shout out to Sein's battle magic, homie used "Three Spears of The Godess". I had the same reaction, so so sick lol. Also something I wanted to touch on, the group, mirrors like a D&D "party"! Dungeons and Dragons! So we have Stark the Barbarian - the front liner or "tank" who has a ton of HP and can take hits, but he is susceptible to spells/magic, Frieren & Fern the Mage/Wizards - not good at hand to hand but devastating from long range, and Sein the Priest/Monk, good at hand to hand and healing. The other episode Fern suggested they add a thief, which would be a rogue in DnD. When I started the series I screeched bc it reminds me so much of DnD and Lord of the Rings, and JRPG's.

Otaku's Finest

Another thing of note with the lotus designs between Fern's & Frieren's jewelry, Fern's is bloomed and Frieren's is not. An eternal love yet unbloomed. I love this show so much.

3:56 My read on most of this series is that whenever we see a flashback from Frieren's memories and there's no explicit commentary on why she's recalling this (e.g. she's not telling Fern & Stark "this one time, Eisen did..."), we're seeing it because Frieren just realized something new about that memory and the people around her. In the case of the "on the knee" scene, that doesn't really clear up how much she now understands Himmel's feelings, but I interpret it as her starting to get a view of the big picture, at the very least.

HalcyonSerenade

You thought you could make it through an episode of Frieren without crying? NOT A CHANCE 😥😢😭

DoktorEvil

They didn't rotoscope the dance, though, they did bring in a pair of professional dancers to use as reference for the waltz. They do something similar for a certain part in early season 2. Madhouse (the animation studio) has an animator on staff that is super-skilled at animating fabric, and they show that off with Fern's dress during the Soiree.

This was all so lovely to read!! 💛 I'm smiling at 'the new aloekaye lore' rn haha 🥹😂 I'm never sure how much to go into my own stuff, but thought it was pertinent here w the lotus being personal for me thru my spiritual practice of yoga. Glad you enjoy these tidbits 🧘 Your observations around Stark/Orden/Graf Granat have me thinking deeply rn about their interconnected themes of strength/fear/trauma... What I will say for now is I agree I think it's so beautiful and kind of gut-wrenching how Frieren encapsulates so much depth to these men, like you said these incredibly strong powerful men and their vulnerabilities that connects them.. I'll have to keep reflecting on this one 💫 Love all your other observations as well, v sweet to read tysm for the insights ✨
