Can't wait to watch this one. This is one of my favorite non action focused episodes.

By title alone, I knew of two characters. It wasn't until I saw Voll that I remembered his story. He mentioned the same thing about his wife to the heroes before they fought the Demon King. Imagine keeping that kind of promise to someone who has been gone for that long of time. His promise was important

Ok, time for the theory I was saving for this episode! I verified first that it's not something revealed in the manga later so far, so it shouldn't count as a spoiler, but I did see that it's a common theory in the fandom: We were introduced to Kraft, who told us he had "righteous triumphs" from the distant past that nobody remembers. His life now as a Monk is his effort to connect to the Goddess so he can be praised for that lost period in his life. The next episode, we learn about the Hero's sword, a weapon that belonged to an ancient hero that once saved the world. Here in this episode, we see presumably Kraft, with a companion from an ancient time, as statues erected to acknowledge them as great heroes. Kraft has a sword in this statue, but no longer carries one when we meet him. The theory (as if its not obvious now lol): Himmel couldn't pull the Hero's sword, not because he wasn't worthy (he very much was), but because the sword's owner is still around, and it won't be able to be pulled again until he's gone. So yea that's fun. Anyways thanks for the reaction! Love how you quickly understood what was going on with Voll when he mentioned Frieren being off to finally defeat the demon king.

This is an excellent and somewhat short video about the cinematography in Frieren, and it highlights this episode specifically: https://youtu.be/0GSZpZGZK44

An overlooked part about Frieren's behavior is when she sees her friends off. She always says, "see you later", with the intention that she will meet them again. But with Old Man Voll, it was different. She realized initially that his time was getting close. News of the demon king was already spread across the continent, but because of his decline in cognitive memory. He had already forgotten, and the contradiction between reality and his memories had begun to show. And so, before she left town. Believing they won't meet again, she says "goodbye". Before Old man Voll on the other hand, told Frieren that he had finally remembered his dead-wife's face. Giving Frieren a bit of faith. She corrects herself, "See you later". They will meet again. Atleast, that's what Himmel would've done.

If you watch this you should record your reaction!

Translator's note : for this one we're doing something special, ther subject will be on german and not japanese. Why ? well it has to do with the names in Frieren. Each character name is a german word with a meaning that reflect the characters they are attibuted to. So far for our main cast we have : - Frieren : Cold, freezing (her original demeanor with most thing and people) - Fern : Far, Distant (something I previously talked about in my comments about japanese suffixes and her use of -sama, she puts distance between her and most people) - Stark : Strong, Powerful (simply my goat). - Himmel : Sky, Paradise (the goal to reach) - Heiter : bright, cheerful (a pretty happy and warm guy, altho a corrupt priest) - Eisen : Iron (the ultimate frontlane) - Sein : to be, existence (liking onee-san type women seems to be the peak of phylosophy for the author) For other supportive we have : - Kraft (wandering monk elf) : force, strenght and power (he got that stark's approved body) - Voll : full, complete (he lived a long lived filled with great love it seems) - Stoltz (Stark's big bro) : Pride (he was the pride of the warrior village) - Graf Granat (noble saved by stark and fern) : graf is a title basicly count and Granat means Garnet (fitting his hair colour and the stone he wore as his emblem). - Orden (Stark's fake father for a few months) : Medal, but can also mean order and fraternity (a dutyfull father making sure to keep true to his son's last word and keep order in his lands) - Flamme (the absolute goat of magic) : flame (yhea pretty on the nose for that one). Finally for demons we have : - Lugner (blood dude killed by fern) : Liar (fitting his schemings and manipulations) - Aura : not a german word but a latin one meaning soul. - Qual : Agony or tourment (was a scary dude with a way to powerful signature spell) - Linie (girl killed by stark abs flex) : Line (I guess she copied ability so like line in a sketch or something) - Draht (demon that try to assassinate frieren in jail) : Wire (that's the "weapon" he used).

I do have to wonder what it's like to watch this show as a native German speaker and have all these familiar words as the character names. Maybe it seems a little on-the-nose, like Lugner, lol. I have a teensy bit of German vocabulary (moreso than I have Japanese, anyway) and recognized words like Stark and Eisen (and a few other names that come later) but a few of those are existing surnames anyway ("Stark" in particular is familiar from "Tony Stark," etc.) so they don't feel out of place as names. But I'm not a *native* German speaker, so I wonder if it's odd for them to see these characters named with everday words that aren't usually names 🤔

Russell Gambardella

The moment during Himmel's conversation with Voll where we're shown the closeup shot of his eyes is when I think he decides to never explicitly tell Frieren that he loves her. I think he sees how Voll is isolated, bound, and burdened by his promise (despite clearly having respect for Voll) and he doesn't want Frieren to become restrained from growth and new experiences in a similar way. Himmel's love is so gentle and pure, with no expectation of getting anything in return, as he understands she wouldn't be able to fully comprehend it's meaning and reciprocate it appropriately during his lifetime; his 'proposal' is his way of letting it be known to her at some point in her future, whenever she grows ready to be able to understand it. Their eternal love is so bitter sweet :(

Vincent

Love to hear you are gonna come back to frieren over your life. Its nice to think about. Its very subtle but the dialogue at the end of the party's flashback with old man voll confirms Frieren actually humored Himmel and remembered all the poses he showed her. That look she gives shows she thinks fondly of it now that he is gone and she has changed. The statue of Kraft and his human companion prove that people can change classes. Kraft used to be a Warrior and he traveled with a Priest. Now Kraft is a Monk. Monk is kind of like a cross between a warrior and a priest. I assume Sage is a cross between Pirest and Mage but thats just a guess based on Heiter (and by extension the clergy) having access to the tomb of Ewig the Sage. The classes confirned in Frieren at this point are: Mage, Priest, Warrior, Hero, Thief, Monk, and Sage. Another subtle lore hint is that the statue of Kraft and Goatee Priest is a stone statue. All the statues of Himmel and the party have been bronze. While never said explicitly this seems to imply that humanity was in the bronze age during Himmel's life and the Stone age when Kraft saved the world. It speaks to how old Kraft really is.

Vincent

The hero's sword didnt belong to an ancient hero. The goddess put the sword there and said a hero would pull it to save humanity from calamity.

Vincent

If never thought of it that way. That makes sense. Im not sure Himmel would decide at that exact moment but I dont believe you are right that Himmel decided not to force his feelings on Frieren for fear she would spend her life remembering him instead of living her life

GhostPhil

I watched a reaction on Youtube by a German teacher (I think physics teacher). He speaks English in it, but obviously he could translate all the German words and it certainly is an interresting reaction to watch.

aloekayeANIME

Such a beautiful nuance within Frieren's character that I hadn't noticed before! ✨ I just know I'm going to think ab this now whenever we see Frieren part ways w someone, it'll be interesting to recognize ✨ Tysm for the comment!! 💛

aloekayeANIME

This is AMAZING!! 🙌🙌🙌 I'd seen some of the first ones from comments noting the German influences on many of the names/proper nouns, but this is a wonderfully extensive/complete list TYSM!! I just learned so much✨💫 @HalcyonSerenade I've also wondered this! There was someone who commented on a Frieren YT ep noting they were German and just had so much love for Frieren, but would love to deep dive into their perspective. @GhostPhil I'll have to search this would love to watch once I'm done.

aloekayeANIME

@Russell Gambardella oh my gosh ... the fact that Himmel potentially thought in that way, not telling Frieren bc he didn't want to burden or pain her, even if it meant pain for himself... This hit me hard. Would just be such a testament again to Himmel's character. What you said about his love being so gentle and pure, no expectation of getting anything in return. Whew tysm for this wonderful comment 💛✨ Curious to hear your thoughts @Vincent on this further/why you think differently ab it 💫

aloekayeANIME

Such a fun read!!! 🙌 I def will need to go back and review/ponder on this one a bit more. I know I was definitely left with more questions than answers when we saw our heroes cleaning this status of Kraft + the unknown hero. Love all of the theories always 💫💛✨

aloekayeANIME

I LOVE when you guys drop other fun things (like OSTs, MVs, other vids) to react to!! ✨🙌💫 I guess I would react to these types of vids once I'm fully done w S1&2 ?? Idk lmk thoughts but that's what I'm thinking.. I think it would be super fun, I'll make a list for things at the end to react to tysm 💛

aloekayeANIME

Oooh this is interestinggg (being able to change classes).. I missed them referring to Kraft as a Warrior before becoming a Monk!! That's so interesting bc from my understanding many monks follow pacifism/ahimsa (nonviolence). Something interesting to keep thinking about (how + why he chose to become a monk). Also I'm still a bit unsure the difference between a Sage and Mage bc yeah like you said they've brought up this ancient Ewig the Sage but then also Qual was a Sage and he was evil but from what I know Ewig was not?? ... can Mages be evil? .. can any of these classes be evil (like evil Warrior, evil Priest, etc.)?? Just going on a thought tangent lol something for me to keep trying to figure out. Tysm for the comment!! ✨💛💫

Vincent

Monk as a class in most fantasy settings is usually a bit different from the Monks of our reality. Usually its someone who is part of a religious order and fights with their fists or a non-bladed weapon. Like Shaolin Monks. I think all of the classes can be evil or good. Like an example of a demon warrior would he Basalt the Throne who they refer to as a Demon General or the demon that attacked Stark's village who wielded an axe, was alone and surrounded by his family. Im not exactly sure if Priests can be evil cuz Priest classes in Frieren have some attunement with the Goddess and based on the characteristics of demons I doubt they could use the Goddess's magic

While on the German part, for the city "Äußerst", the ß can be pronounced like a double ss and written like that, too, instead of using the ß character.

I absolutely love this episode, the story of Old Man Voll is beautifully crafted despite being so short. There is a whole playlist I suggest people watch if they enjoy this series, to get a more in-depth look in to it, but I highly suggest watching the video about this episode. It is spoiler free, just dont watch the rest of the videos. This video really shows how beautiful Frieren is from a filmography standpoint, how they frame shots and use standard rules, and breaking them, to push emotional impacts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GSZpZGZK44&list=PL71AwF_Rjh4ltB0yWmvoplpMLZ-LsIRX3&index=29

If you were going to react to it, I think whenever is fine. It doesn't contain any spoilers beyond Old Man Voll, so you could react to it now, but reacting to it after the season is fine, too. Most reactors don't generally do reactions to video like this, but I think it would be a neat thing to do.

HalcyonSerenade

With how reflective Frieren is as a story, it tends to affect people in very different ways (other than shedding tears, which seems pretty universal if the show had *any* effect) and the bit with Old Man Voll seems to vary even more than the baseline. I've even seen people say that they felt the show was merely "ok" until Old Man Voll really changed their mind on how deep the story's meditations really are. (I personally was all-in from episode 1, but I can kinda see why this episode was a turning point in some people's appreciation for the show) Here's my personal takeaway: after we see Old Man Voll have a memory lapse toward the end of his mini-story, where he says something that indicates he doesn't even realize the Demon King was defeated 80 years ago, I think of his introduction scene a little differently. I think that when Frieren first greeted him, he maybe really *didn't* recognize or remember her at first -- he wasn't actually pretending like she suggested. But after she suggests that, he quietly does remember who she is and continues acting as he would, slyly tricking Stark like he does. Like maybe he actually has these dementia-like episodes all the time, but he's good at hiding them. But that might just be some projection. I lost my dad to a brain tumor a couple years before I watched Frieren, and after he was gone and we started looking through his personal spaces, we saw a lot of evidence that maybe that tumor had been significantly affecting his cognition for longer than we realized. It was very visible when the words he was choosing simply didn't make sense, but maybe he was having cognitive slips even when he was speaking coherently, and those slips were affecting his judgements at a time that we *thought* he was fine. Suddenly we're re-interpreting a lot of his actions and statements in the years leading up to the time when we knew for sure he wasn't adequately functional. So I think I'm coming to Old Man Voll with that experience. Knowing now that Old Man Voll is dealing with some major memory issues, I can't help but think that his "ploy" in the beginning of the episode was actually a moment of mental lapse and he's just good at hiding it.

Swiftur

I think it really depends on the "type of watcher" you are. Some people are really invested, have a bunch of thoughts on each scene, think about every line and every name, try to solve every puzzle themselves while they're watching. And others, such as myself, just kind of watch, enjoy and let the author and everyone who worked on it do their job telling the story, invoking the emotions and unraveling the mysteries. So personally, while I'm German, I never really put any thought into the names of the characters and places or tried to infer anything from them, other than the occasional "hah that's a strange word to use as a name".

HalcyonSerenade

Man, just look at all that empty space in the frame at 15:50 (reaction video time)... Frieren looking offscreen to someone not shown, and a great expanse of emptiness to her back. To me this layout is telling us that Frieren suddenly feels very alone in this moment, as she realizes that she and Old Man Voll are mentally farther apart than she realizes. It's always fascinating to see what a show communicates just with unusual or unexpected placement of characters within the frame. Frieren is chock-full of sly framing choices for its vibes and emotions.

Pluto

Just finished catching up on your reaction to Frieren, I'm interested in seeing how much enjoy such a different show as Demon Slayer next!
