Not at all. The hooked cross has been an ubiquitous and extremely common symbol worldwide (including in the US) for thousands of years - it's probably even the earliest "intentional" symbol we know of. It was almost as present in european culture as it was in the East. The first documented contact between H and the cross is when he was young and studied at the Lambach Abbey, a benedictine monastery. He was not the one who designed the specific nazi flag (colorway et al) although he claims the opposite in his book, in which you'd be pressed to find any real link to Hindu schools of thought. What the cross means varies in specifics depending on the culture and location but in essence it's a representation of stillness and movement - the two most basic potentialities in the majority of religion/spiritual and occult currents. As such, the orientation is usually meaningless, and you'll find examples of it facing both directions in eastern culture as well as on nazi regalia. The swastika/sauwastika theory was proposed by an ethnologist kind of out of thin air in the late 1800s if I recall correctly. With regard to H and his minions' interest in the occult, most of it was directed to the apocryphal neo-germanic paganism which was en vogue in their circle. In the early days of nazism, they tried exploring several mythical trails (and this trope has been used in pop culture for a long time) to find proofs that the german nation was the true heir to the "hindu-aryan" civilization, and to the Holy Grail itself! They even tampered with archeological sites to bolster their claims, one example that comes to mind is an expedition they did in Cathar caves in the South of France in the 1930s. H used the occult scene to get traction for his campaigns, the influence of intellectuals on german politics was precious to him in that way, but when he became an established leader a lot of it was put aside and several of those guys were ostracized. He became very critical of all of it later and even mocked Himmler's obsession for it on occasions. Make no mistake, his true interests were hatred and antisemitism, and his goal to obtain a very earthly kind of power.

I think it’s worth noting how Militant Zone and M8l8th market themselves. The merch is very similar to a lot of Gen Z YouTuber style - pretty high quality from the looks of it. The music videos have a very cinematic look that you wouldn’t typically see from Black Metal. With “Le Dernier Putsch” by Peste Noire looking very similar visually to a rap video in America and you don’t really get any of the typical BM corpse paint stuff. Even the footage I’ve seen from Asgardsrei has a very cinematic look “TikTok” fascist aesthetic. A very clear and concerted effort has been put into marketing this material to younger people and not shying away from the mainstream which is something we haven’t really ever seen in the NSBM scene.

I would quibble a little with the description of black metal as all being the same song a little bit, but to the degree that I think this is also true of middling bands in a lot of different scenes and styles. Like i've heard handfuls of death metal bands that were indistinguishable from eachother or track to track, I've heard equally unremarkable and underwhelming grind bands, or hardcore bands. The big difference with black metal would be that I think there's more of a militant adherence to a very narrow sound as being the only "true" black metal, but there's still interesting things happening outside that narrow band. But I also totally get not wanting to bother looking for any of it.

Also the only reason why Azov is seen as better trained and equipped is because the corrupt Nazi sympathizers in the Ukranian army make sure to funnel the best equipment to them, while the Nazi fucks that run it happily send all their fresh conscripts to the front to die off while keeping the best equipment and support for the "ideologically pure" old guard fascists. It's actually a huge problem, to the point that the Ukrainian army has had to release statements admitting that Azov units actually function at worse efficiency than other units because they just shove anyone who they don't think is a good enough fascist into the meat grinder as a way of purifying their ranks. That's why they've had to basically break up Azov and spread it around other units in the Ukrainian army so it stopped functioning as a gang conducting their own mini holocaust of their fellow ukranians by way of making their undesirables go die on the front. In a better world, I think some sort of Climate Corp would be a useful project. Giving people a sense of purpose and participation in society; building infrastructure that can prevent (or forestall) mass casualty. Absolutely, the US government could not implement this in a way that would not result in mass murder; but places like Switzerland that have high/mandatory service and virtually no combat do reforestation work. Even Canada in the 90s used to use our army to shore up riverbanks ahead of major floods and control forest fires. Idk wtf they're doing now, but I know a couple guys who served. They just hung out in rural Quebec until they got brain injuries/their first psychotic episode.

Coming back to this, I'd have to disagree that there's necessarily some agent of outside influence between "sad teen hates his/her life" and "start killing people." Clearly there ARE such agents, and they're prolific enough to have compiled a rap sheet, but the position of any young lower-than-middle-class American – and there are a shitload of USED-to-be-middle-class Americans who have been newly exposed to sub-"real people" miseries and constant shameful sense of powerlessness that they managed to avoid for most of their lives, often without knowing they were avoiding anything (cos they were kids); this seems to me an overlooked and possibly crucial subject, not just arrangement of behavior or voting or whatever by economic class, but the specific ideas and convictions of people who WERE solidly middle-class before 2008, and are nowhere near that now, and especially kids born in the timeframe to experience "childhood" as economic solidity and "adolescence + incipient adulthood" as everything fucking falling apart – anyway, the social and economic position of any young American below a certain buffer zone of perceived stability is intensely fucking grim, there's no indication that we should believe in anything getting better, ever, and even if the economic brunt of the last 20 years hit their parents much more directly than them, it is a fucked-up thing to watch your parents lose, one sliver at a time, the privileges they once enjoyed as members of Society. The people at the bank go from friendly to loansharks, the creditors are less and less afraid of any consequences if they fuck you up too bad, the general office-level presumption that it would be a net negative for someone like your parents to get humiliated in front of "peers" melts into steam. That leads to a familiar litany of bad shit: drinking and drugs, or related domestic violence, or hopeless get-rich-quick bullshit, or sudden religious zealotry, or dubious "prescriptions" of what may or may not qualify as "pharmaceuticals." (I know a case of a middle-aged woman buying what I guess were called "supplements" as part of her newfound Christian fervor, and at least one of the "supplements" turned out to be like 40% ethanol, getting respectably wrecked every morning for some padding against every awful day.) All this same shit can swing toward the crypto + "blockchain" + general internet bullshit side of the river system, and increasingly THAT world is inextricable from the "somehow scam a political body while retaining just enough faith in your own scam that perhaps it isn't wrong?" estuaries – but, at least anecdotally, it seems unusual for young people who have no sense of "connections," or even "a connection," and whose most immediate material and familial circumstances have been getting steadily more fucked up for a long time, to end up in Bit Vegas. A "connection" might well lead them there, but on their own, they've got no reason to believe that they can "just do" anything. Clearly there is at least some degree of internet architecture, whereby some of the biggest pieces of shit on Earth do some of the worst things anyone could do, and clearly it's been a major factor in this Failed States Index-level awfulness – but I also think there are a lot of young Americans who are locked into the sense they have nothing to live for, and who may decide to do the only thing they CAN do that America will ever pay any fucking attention to, and if nothing changes afterward, at least they join the host of martyrs who will be remembered and revered by every future American to discover that life is bullshit. And THAT, when your whole life has been a demonstration that you're nothing, THAT – as the man once sang – sure looks like Something to Be.
