Hello listeners. We’re back, and talking Cuba of course but also: Instagram, the words designed in a lab to drive you insane, big tech art style, and infographics.

Deleting social media was the best decision I've made. Don't miss it.

Will Marino

i am certainly one of the most handsome young male listeners

sage j.

such good timing on the last line

Harley

Finally.

O

love to 169 with my wife and my wife’s Memphis Corporate boyfriend

Andrew Owens

I enjoy the shoutout at 3:19

Joshua Baker

THANK YOU!!! I know y'all needed a well deserved vacation but I'm so happy you're back! Thank you!!!!

Zachary White

Samantha Powers like Austin Powers

Jessica S

You were missed! I felt like a teen again, checking my Patreon feed as if it were the answering machine: did they call yet? are they back? lol.

Jessica S

When Brace said to open a private browser session to search for corporate Memphis art style, I was expecting something NSFW. Instead it was like being at work. :/

Jessica S

Super Shady Social Media? Social PsyOp Media? STFU Social Media? And my Among Us-obsessed kids would suggest Kinda Sus Social Media.

J P 3

"Foreign Fidel trick riders are going around gaslighting Cubans," she said in perfect American inflected English. Of the social media propaganda channels Facebook is the only social media site that can really lay claim to a genocide. It is the closest thing there is to an all consuming cable news channel. The BBC's international news coverage is also pretty ham-fisted propaganda at times.

I think TA had an episode on Smart Cities and they mentioned the exact rent thing you noted, where it would just lock your door if you were nominally late. No interpersonal context, or even human contact, needed. As a long time renter by necessity, it’s chilling to imagine. (Housing prices are unreal in our area but our school district provides A+ support to our insanely bright ASD kiddo. I mean, how the heck to prices keep rising amidst a pandemic? There’s not a single listing in a 40 mile radius that’s under $1 mil. So depressing.)

Sandy

What's the ending secret? I'm too lazy to look it up

Gulb

The social media part of this is really good. I mean, the Cuba part is good too, but actual wisdom is dropped in the other part.

mrakobesiye

Instagram psychological warfare is so awful. I (as a total outsider) found myself following the Artsakh war on Instagram last year. The fact that I got sucked into following a war that had nothing to do with me, basically as entertainment, was disgusting. My awareness of the war also did literally nothing

Sparrow

Link?? My search powers are failing me :-(

tazz

so happy y’all are back although this could be my mental disease speaking :(

K Barlas

I see Maoist Brace making a comeback at 46 mins. still waiting on that Belden program

otis

inb4 salamanders are amphibians

Chinaman Jones

Excuse me, sirs, but Joey “Coco” Diaz has made it clear that the Cuban subaltern *cannot* speak and he and his weed-cookie boys are coming with shotguns to liberate ¡la Cuba!

crunk

LMAO THE TIKTOK SOUND AT THE END

Andrew

The music this episode is very reminiscent of crystal castles. Very good mr yung chomsky

Brian

Am I on the list

Kasz

It's true. John Travolta died in Pulp Fiction because he was constipated on the toilet due to his heroin habit and because he left his gun out for Bruce Willis to pwn him with

Brian Long

Not to be “that guy” but I got off Facebook and Instagram in 2020 for all of these reasons, but especially because, like Brace said, I felt myself going absolutely insane. Unfortunately I’m still on Twitter because I’m a masochist.

Gavin Farrell

Good commentary on media consumption becoming a brain worm driving us insane. What we restrict our consumption to limits and can distort our perception of the world. There is no innocent media. I recently read Don Quixote. First literary recognition that the media we consume to excess can literally drive us crazy.

zora.crawfish

Anyone else think Jacobin's art is a wee bit too Corporate Memphis ?

Hazzy

nice little snippet at the end, shit killed me when I initially saw that vid lmao.

Adam Edwards

Poor Lukacs getting regurgitated 479 times through the rotted western university grapevine for corporate marketing speak

natalie

glad you're back! this one is worthy of an unlocking - there's so many "leftists" with dogshit views on cuba

FamilyGorgeous

brace is very worried the corporate bisexuals will make him gay

natalie

and not to be that person but I don't think it'd be impossible to get bo burnham on the pod to discuss the fomo activism and dangers of crazy making social media ur discussing at the end here - reminds me a lot of the vibe of his most recent specialé

Burat

Brace you really gotta get some español pronunciation lessons from mike judge

Jimothy Realname

this is a good podcast and its very disrespectful to compare it to the Greater Toronto Area

Sam Zeng

Im going to email Bhaskhar to hold him accountable.

Woke Batou

Good ep! There were some wild ass takes on Cuba on left gun IG

titi_kb

Man y’all should look at Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” re: the mechanics of how infographics reproduce propaganda and circulate it without temporal or geographic context. Or just watch the first ep. of John Berger’s Ways of Seeing.

Bingo Bongo

i don't know half of the internet references you made, but i do like memes. i am eating at the trash can with all of you

Alexis

That discussion around Instagram, social media, and the internet was really good. I would love to hear an episode completely on a leftist critique around those topics.

Doug Cartel

That's what gets me about propaganda, most of the people spreading it aren't even getting paid to do it!

Gabe Dieguez

the Ukrainians of the Caribbean

Jake Innis

Stop gaslighting Cubans guys! (Also Brace, my gay friend thinks you’re sexy and I wanna set you two up on a date, dm me)

Reverend Carter

i only go the corporate part of memphis when i have to. otherwise i stick to the more same parts like orange mound and binghampton.

Abby Brown

brad troemel mocks the instagram infographics so well

Javier

169 is obviously marilyn manson sucking his own dick, come on

A S

Disappointed to hear the pod subscribes to the regime's propaganda. I on the other hand am taking direct measures to support the Cuban people by sending them condoms for their pizza.

Zakir KH

thought this would be related to memphis (either tn or egypt). Unsubscribed.

Aisling

I'm only like halfway through the episode, but before I forget, I wanted to let you know that it was a Colombian company that canceled the Cuban part of the shipment of Chinese medical supplies they were delivering to South America.

Jason

I was really struggling with mental health as a young guy and just sort of lucked out realizing Instagram was making me feel miserable. Never looked back since, that shit is scary.

Welfare state

Why the fuck would you subject yourself to listen to that

Jessica S

Those sound really good. I love this shit.

Sparrow

thank you!

lin hou

I gave up FB in 2020, use Twitter a tiny bit mainly read accounts I'm interested in & don't really scroll. Maybe scroll thru IG & TikTok once a week but life is definitely better without a large diet of social media but the messages still filter in. For the most part I'm happy to be ignorant of what people think of a given topic.

Brendo

Salamanders are amphibians

(Noah J)

So wait - you guys are saying Russia actually did influence the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election with twitter bots? Weird180 degree flip.

feelfreeto

I call the social media activism fads ‘trendy empathy’

Claire Simon

THANK YOU liz for bringing up standpoint epistemology! More people need to familiarize themselves with that term imho

rolfesam

David Rudnik quote oh yes

fjfffffddd

Russiagate as presented wasn't real, Russian influence in the alt right online culture is probably real

Rai

yes! like obviously, if you have experienced something, you probably know more about it in some ways than someone who hasn't, but that 1) doesn't make you automatically right/moral and 2) doesn't make your points above criticism. there's nothing inherently wrong with taking people's lives experiences seriously, but this is weaponized a lot and folks should be aware of that.

Rai

"never look at IG" is a pretty good rule of thumb

carl

salamander are amphibians... maybe

uleg0

if were going to have mediocre comedians on, id just rather have nick mullen and they just can talk about anti pedo shit like the franklin scandal

Nathan Forman

Where can I find the original vid please share??

Hazzy

just google word for word & it'll pop up on trueanon's twitter

Danielle

Instagram is a useful reminder of how unattainable internet anonymity is.

Brick Hardrock

Really enjoying the recurring theme of political economy of the web.

Some Guy

Finally got an office job and I've seen so much corporate Memphis already Jesus fuck it's terrible
