We take a long look at the rough life and weird death of Elliott Smith.

Autopsy report here.

Ryan Carroll

Scrolling past this looking for episodes while listening to the episode on the Cash app murder RIGHT as Brace says Elliot Smith. Brace oughta do an episode on Robert Anton Wilson (wrote a lot about synchronicities, which I don't believe in, but he's so fun to read) and his Illuminatus trilogy. Influenced a shit ton of conspiracy culture. He intentionally tried to induce insanity in himself as a lark in the early 70s and came out as agnostic about everything. His pet hypothesis was the original Illuminati started by throwing orgies so good they telepathically made contact with the Federation from Star Trek. Also one of the notable examples of a libertarian pre-Rothbard hijacking the term from left. So basically an anarchist. Acquaintances with Philip K Dick.

Lulu

I'm an Irish listener why are you always dissing Ireland like genuine question? Of all Western countries, arguably the least problematic.

D G

Ibogaine?!?

Lars

Going through the catalog & oh my God, I had no idea yall did an Elliott Smith ep. So sad & happy rn. 💜

Dan Z

Woaah

kaicycle

Haha what the fuck

Travis

You sons of bitches you did it!

Miroslav

This brings me back

Max Chow-Gillette

brace said elliott smith sucked on a livestream last year…. how the tables turn

B

The GOAT

Hannah

Embarrassed at how excited I got lmao

joshua emery

Ffs... I'm gonna have to get ready for this one

hannah mihulka

Man we are smoking the same shit because all ur music episodes have been my shiiiiit

MoldyTolge

The next escalation: episode on the inventor of Polymerase Chain Reaction.

pepto_azymuth

My crazy neighbor says she regularly communes with the ghost of Elliot Smith and he visited her immediately after his death.

pepto_azymuth

Also I enjoyed seeing da gay pussy eatah in the new channel 5 vid on qcon

Mike Brown

the absolute mad lads they actually did it

NYCM&AHole

My roommate listened to Elliot Smith and as far as I care both he and Elliot deserved it

Dan Z

Wait why are you guys even talking about this if you don't even care about the music and sound totally dismissive when Elliott Smith is actually extremely talented

Sam

Trip hop is also portishead and tricky. Britpop is Radiohead, bluetones, menswear, ocean colour scene, suede. Urghh embarrassed and disgusted with myself.

orc

Yess

Busdriver112

i have never heard of this man. Super interested. Keep up the good work

Jimothy Realname

Ah, fuck, you can't drink on antidepressants?

Matelda

This just broke my heart for no reason

Kevin Stanley

Read the report just now; I'll listen to the episode but if the report is saying only one of the stab wounds hit the pericardium and the right ventricle; he mighta killed himself on the 2nd stab after a failed first stab

steve

man this really is so brutal I cannot finish the episode. sad and horrific beyond comprehension.

Dean Watson

Maybe don’t talk shit about the Irish

swervegriffin

When your favorite podcast shits on all your favorite music 😔

NYCM&AHole

Am here for the KISS episode

Mickey Soltys

Brace, if you haven’t checked out Nick Drake’s music and story then you need to do that.

Nicolas Thirion

loved the little brace interlude at the end of this one. sad story, heavy topics, great episode. you guys did well. ❤️

yotter

Thank you, Yung Chomsky. I was yelling "Portishead" too.

the crazy guy

Many correct truths in the first 25 minutes of this episode!

Matthew Wood

Omg cackling loudly at the bright eyes bridgers watch

Gulb

My biggest regret as a middle aged former band dude is that I was never murdered by a girlfriend.

Adam

Thanks Brace, I needed your suicide talk today. It’s almost a week clean from junk. Here’s for some resemblance of autonomy.

Gulb

Also, Melvins are not grunge. They are fucking metal. Jerks.

Yup

Thank goodness you're not a music podcast

Alaric

That was a very unexpected and touching ending. You know, before the imposter Criss talk. Thank you Brace (and chomsky for the music behind him).

Dean Watson

Also goddamn great music this episode YC

Faroose

So what’s the verdict?

Antifaith

wagon christ is luke vibert's trip hop name

Jonathan lees

Everybody has a good song in them somewhere over the rainbow

Jordan J

So does Andrew Cuomo do crack?

BethBow

What’s Wheezer doing on Twitter?

Garfield Compton

Suicide is comforting, having that type of control is comforting. There is no lack of courage involved, pain is only subjective when we are outside of it, remember it’s hard to kill your self. If you can hold out, do it. Calling someone selfish is a shit thing to do.

jules

what does Liz have against the yeah yeah yeahs haircut cmon

JD

listening to you guys talk shit about genres and bands made me ill

Tara Acharya

I appreciate how hard these guys work to keep churning out episodes but what was the point of this ep? Any salient takeaway apart from the unrelenting tragedy of it all?

Jeremy Silver

Have you heard the recordings of him shit talking fauci and saying how cycle threshold should never pass a certain point . Very convenient him dying before the pandemic

Evan Gomez

got 50 minutes in before i realized this episode wasn’t about elliot rodger

RM Brown

is it possible he asked Chiba to kill him?

James Bradley

Solidarity it gets easier as time goes by. Best thing i ever did was get clean.

Liam

You guys should really do a Phil Ochs ep

TrueAnonPod

I brought up Nick Drake right after we finished recording -- YC

Sam Sal

Boston is cool and gangster

elle

for reasons totally unrelated to elliott smith this one got me. thnx 🖤

Mickey Soltys

Sweet. Good to know some of you youngsters know some real music. Also, don’t become a music podcast and may I present Amy Winehouse as another way to view singer/songwriters. Some of them can actually sing and write.

John Harwood

I once lost a pinball game to Elliott in PDX when I was in high school. He was very nice about it.

Renee Leath

I really appreciate the transparency about the tragedy of depression and unhealthy coping mechanisms, completely unromanticized. This isn't an easy listen, but it's a good one. Thanks guys.

jhplayer0

You guys should do a regular sub series on celebrity deaths. I'd love to see you guys look into Robin Williams Michael Jackson and David Bowie.

hater

i went to the green day concert a few days ago and weezer opened for them, rivers cuomo was so painfully corny. thanks for letting me know he went to harvard so i can hate him even more

lkmewqa

"President Chaos" just makes me picture Brace as Butters from South Park with a shitty tin foil mask.

Ian Ritter

Great job on the music for this one, yc

Dara Higgins

Gotta say I was pretty disappointed when brace and liz said they don't like his music. Great episode nonetheless. Props to my man Yung Chomsky with the awesome synth waltz #2.

Jessica S

1. Goddamnit, now I’ll have that sweater song stuck in my head all goddamn day. 2. As a knitter, I find Weezer’s song akin to a hate crime. I have, in fact, witnessed both a cat and a young child destroying a sweater-in-progress while pulling the thread. Not cool, man.

Mark Owen

Way to differentiate Olympia labels starting with (or wholly consisting of) K.

Jessica S

Say it ain’t so, Liz ! If Weezer is too old to be listening, then I only have another 6-8 years of listening to y’all left in me. You’ll have to break up the band before then, lol. Ok, I did not realize until after writing that, that I was referencing another Weezer song. I was never a fan; how do I know so many of their songs?!

Evan Scott

depends on what it is. drinking on lithium and tricyclics will kill you i think. I started an SSRI (zoloft) at the beginning of quarantine (big drinking times anyway) and just realized now that I've finally weaned myself off that it was making me super impulsive/over drinking, getting drunk really fast, and being like bedridden til like 3pm the next day if i got like, chill party drunk. shit sucked

Evan Scott

doesn't effect everyone like that tho

titi_kb

Brace lets no man steal his thyme.

Jessica S

I believe that if anyone is worthy of admiration, it’s those who deal with addiction, who live this struggle, regardless of their success. They never stop trying, even if they never beat it. People that never experience that level of undoing aren’t less than but there’s no way they’re better than, not by a long shot. I guess what I mean is, shame is poisonous and is a lie. You’re the strong one, even in your weakest moments. It’s ok to be proud of that at any point in your life. Sorry if that is super corny, just move along then, lol.

jess

Y’all need up to date goss, Phoebe Bridgers is dating actor Paul Mescal

BryceSprungstein

I'm a little confused to be honest. I'm not really sure what this was about or why it was an episode at all. Either he killed himself or was killed by his girlfriend and she got away with it? This just seems like True Crime stuff (if there was even a crime). I thought things were going somewhere when Geffen came up (I was like 'he did it'). It seemed weird especially with some Epstein and Maxwell drops as well as VickyWard's podcast about it and the fact that she wrote an article suggesting that Epstein may have been a spy.

Brian

Was looking for this comment 👍🏻

TrueAnonPod

First week clean can be toughest—then it can get tough around a month or a few months, because the memory of withdrawals starts to fade or you get impatient at how you don’t feel happy (if that’s the case) etc etc etc. The trick to getting off junk is to just become psychotic about it, excise it from the list of options, become fanatical in avoidance. I am very glad to hear you’ve kicked dope and if you need to talk about it DM us on Instagram or Twitter because I always forget to check patreon messages

dawood

liz saying she was into mineral is obvious bait to get sad losers like me to ramp up my sub to $50

Chris Dertz

Man, Elliott's music has changed/saved my life on multiple occasions and I was very very hesitant to listen to this but I'm glad I did. I got that bullsh bug in my brain that struggles w suicide attempts/ideation my whole life and kinda concentrated recently and I needed to hear Brace unload on all that in the outro. Thanks y'all

Sam

Fuck fighting ISIS. Brace robbing the killers is the most honorable and righteous thing he’s ever done.

Baron

Did Phoebe help you with the research?

Bent Mind

LIZ. I’ve thought about jLo’s ass A LOT since I was 13. I don’t think she had ass implants removed, that’s her real all natural ass 100%. but rather, I think she had Lipo from the gut and love handles in her “love don’t cost a thing” days when she first became THE butt girl. Now that she’s in her 50s, butt probably started to sag. So she works out like a MF and now there is no fat on her ass... which was the nice part... just pure muscle butt now.

Mary

“El scorcho” is ***allegedly*** abt Jennifer Chiba

Char Kelly

Brace finding out that Conor Oberst is dating Phoebe Bridges — I felt that! (I knew it already but still) solidarity Brace

Max Chow-Gillette

i literally said “what about portishead????” to myself one second before yung chomsky said it lmfao

BIG VIBES

what the hell was this episode about?

Nuan Sonar

I also wanna know; I looked at their Twitter but didn't see anything especially sus...

Nuan Sonar

Life, love, and the meanings that lie therein.

will michel

enjoyed this episode even though it seemed like y’all were repeatedly tripping over yourselves to prove that you never liked elliott smith’s music. think that’s honestly a bay area thing. my wife is the same way

Julie Hass

Uh what's going on with weezers twitter

Rene Saller

I loved the way that Yung Chomsky incorporated riffs from Elliott Smith songs in his interstitial music this week. By far the best part of the show.

otis

Jesus Christ, Brace. Thank you.

otis

You really should though

Vincent Utah

Brace’s monologue near the end… that shit stung a lot. Been feeling that sting for almost 10 years now since my mom also took her life. I can attest to the strange fixation you encounter when someone close to you has committed suicide. It’s like being a fly moving towards and banging itself against the burning hot incandescent bulb. It hurts the more you dive into these stories and investigate—opening old wounds, reminding you of your own losses, empathizing with the pain of others, etc. But (for me anyway) part of you keeps dragging the rest of you into the curiosity of it all because maybe this one story about this other sad case might shed some light on why your loved one checked out completely. Of course it never really does. I’ve noticed suicide, and especially suicide due to depression, is strange in that the darkness and pain doesn’t really die with the individual. It metastasizes like a visceral explosion—a dirty bomb of dark emotional radiation rupturing and passing into everyone around the deceased, the bulk of that darkness channeling especially into those closest to them. But thank god, Brace said the one mantra that still keeps me going: Emotions and feelings don’t last forever. What you’re feeling now—good, bad, indifferent, whatever—will always fade into something else in due time. Learning to roll with the flow of it is how you keep going. (And yeah, getting sober helps a lot too for those who need it.)

TrueAnonPod

Change your Twitter avatar to a hot young girl and find out

Emily Myers

Was feeling weird about this one until Brace’s monologue at the end (thanks boi). I also lost my mother to suicide, in a way that makes me believe entirely that Elliot Smith took his own life. She was drunk and manic (idk if she was on her meds or not) and she plunged a carving knife from our kitchen into her abdomen - twice. The second plunge was more powerful, deeper, more deliberate, did the most damage. So I personally, don’t think it’s far fetched at all to conclude a person could reach a state where they could bypass whatever reflexes we have to keep us from harming ourselves so severely. I’ll acknowledge that it may be easier to disembowel yourself then it would be to stab your own heart in half, and it would be so nice to think depression isn’t powerful enough to bring someone to that point, but people who have been to those depths of sadness know exactly how that illness can consume you. Knowing just how far it can go makes you realize people who fight depression every day are deliberate survivors, and their victories lie in just continuing to exist every day

Julie Hass

Ugh, I liked weezer too. Just another disappointment this podcast has brought to my attention.

JD

All 7 of the major Elliott Smith albums are masterpieces. This includes the posthumous 'From a Basement on a Hill' and the odds & ends 'New Moon'. Brace listen to 'Fear City' from 'New Moon' it's pure quiet rage and unforgettable in its simplicity. Also 'Distorted Reality is now a Necessity' & 'Don't Go Down' 'from 'Basement'. 'Cupids Trick' from 'Either/Or', 'Tomorrow' from XO and all of 'Roman Candle' are also favorites. Also 'Plainclothes Man' from the final Heatmiser album! I wouldn't really know how to get someone younger 'into' Elliott but those are good starting points. Also nice job Yung Chomz!

a clash of purple

This episode was very heartfelt and all, but I don't get why you made it. Is it some dumb California thing? This is like some weird PSA. Like, I had never heard of Elliott Smith before in my life, and now having listened to the episode I wish I hadn't... I don't care about this guy...

a clash of purple

It's either some kind of girl thing or some kind of California thing. Oh well, there's bound to be a few duds in 170 episodes.

YukiNukem64x

It's revenge for having to deliver on the multiple requests to do an episode on Mcaffee.

Ryan Hoover

Is the TrueAnon fanbase all Zoomers like Chapo?

BruceInAdelaide

never go vegetarian! In it's struggle for power the working class will need every ounce of first class protein it can access, subject only to the scientific guidelines of Australia's CSIRO, commonwealth scientific and industrial research organisation a world class research body. The CSIRO diet research over many decades, and begun by vego's, involves more participants than ANY other in the world, Increasingly as more decades pass and more and better data comes in, it includes more lean animal protein and less carbs. Do not argue with me, argue with the CSIRO and hard science! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSIRO also CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, https://www.csiro.au/en/research/health-medical/diets/CSIRO-Total-Wellbeing-Diet-Online

Yup

That they hate Elliott Smith's music

Jessica S

That last part you wrote, spot on. My mother attempted suicide many times when I was young, and it messed with me, and still does in ways I don’t understand, but it’s hard to imagine having lost her. I’m so sorry you, and Brace, lost your own. ❤️

Journe

Im from the bay and saw heatmiser's last show at Bottom of the Hill. love Elliott Smith!

Journe

there's protein in just about everything ffs, I've been vegan for 10 years and have run in multiple marathons, I will out live you and your demonic flesh eating ways!!

Jimothy Realname

nope, i'm 30 and i feel so much older. so much older.

Andy Pust

I asked you to go to the Green Day concert.. you said you never heard of them.

naplanx

Brace I love you please be less shrill

bill

Random but have they ever done a Gary V ep?

Sam Sal

What an episode. Instant classic

Alias Dan Davis

I initially thought it was kind of random to find this addressed here, but then it hasn't really been seriously addressed anywhere or at length (that I'm aware of) - so why not here, right? - - - Truth be told, I was never a huge fan of the guy, but then when he was (most likely) murdered & then the investigation f#cked it off as a suicide, it more than pissed me off. Thanks gang for even looking into this.

Bingo Bongo

as you can probably tell, from how funky and goofy i am, i like the talking heads

gen~

omg yung chomsky i was literally about to write a comment saying "but what about portishead?"

Alias Dan Davis

... also, I'm over 50 & calling Liz out as "ageist" - & yes, I know it's a "bit" - yes, I'm still listening to/supporting the show. But, bad look. Really.

Abby Brown

really appreciate brace for talking so openly about everything

Dallas

Tough one to listen to, but I appreciate how you guys handled it. I'd also be interested in an ep on Aaron Swartz. The circumstances around his death always seemed a little weird to me, but I've never really looked into it in detail.

Preston

brace 🥺 phoebe britches 😳

Yevka D

Damn I don’t give a shit about Eliot smith but this made me cry like a little bitch

Shiv

Keep going, Adam!

Shiv

YC hope you see this—once an irish rando at an SF bar told me he was Nick Drake and I let him bc ppl are weird (he def wasn’t and I did google in case)

Jimmy Cookman

OK you lil chomskyhonk hosts, there was a third trip hop artist: Tricky. And it was good. That was the day the music died, with your chickletshoe level immersion. yall got me riled

D.K. Wilson

REALLY interesting show. Honest portrayals of personal foibles by podcast hosts are not the order of the day (Dave Navarro comes to mind as another who has & that’s about it). Never listened - consciously at least- to an Elliott Smith song. His life was definitely fucked up. It’s odd - or not - how many guitarists have traumatic experiences that lead us to finding solace in the aloneness of that instrument. What’s also odd is how musicians’ deaths seem to be treated so cavalierly by the police. It seems like every death I’ve read or heard about is accompanied by a snap, on the scene determination of death. Almost always it’s “drug overdose” or “suicide.” No nuance, no true examination of the scene, no deep questioning of anyone at the scene... fucking strange.

Hector

shut up no one cares

Hector

ok then dont listen stop whining damn

S

Same effects as Evan described for me on Zoloft and drinking

Claire Simon

Very important question for Brace: Basket of Light, Reflection, or Solomon’s Seal?

Jarrod Noah

how can you say you don't like Pearl Jam? Have you even seen the YouTube lyric video for Yellow Ledbetter with the Lord of the Rings font? smh

S

With all due respect, completely agree. I kept saying, what's the theme, what's the point, not that I'm looking for a "bow to tie it all in" but this episode sounded banal and off-putting -no deep dive or new info- it just sounded like a too good for school music genre and Smith dissing ep

S

Been listening to you guys consistently for a whole while. When i listen to episodes such as this one, I dunno how it flows from the topics/themes/Epstein_style/ dives you guys were originally putting energy into

Austin Gandy

Great episode y’all. This was heartbreaking and hurt to listen to but was also super eye opening. Thanks

Sarah

Big true anon fan AND Elliott Smith fan and had never heard of this contentious theory. My bet is that he asked her to help him with this. That dude did not want to be on this planet. Loved the Figure 8 interludes though

Brian Bonnell

Brace’s message at the end of this episode snuck up on me, I wasn’t expecting that sort of sincerity and sentimentality. A close family member is right now in the thick of it trying to get clean from dope. It’s hard to watch and harder to know how to help, especially not having any frame of reference. Brace gave a little clarity. Not what I was expecting from my Epstein podcast.

Marston Bicks

I worked at a certain university label based in Illinois that distributes a certain Japanese woman appropriating polish culture and I must say... something is up. Also every zoomer who likes this show probably ended up in a psych ward after listening to too much Elliot much like myself.

Bess C

as someone who’s a long time trueanon listener, relatively new elliott smith listener, has a (far in the past) history of suicidal tendencies, and as someone who finds his death extremely weird and has intended to look into it more….thank you so much for this episode. was just expecting it to be mostly informative, but this might be my favorite episode ever

Sean S

Thank god you don’t have a music podcast.

Sean S

The only good thing about this episode is the YC Elliot mixes.

Anna

That's what I thought. Maybe they're confusing conner oberst with that guy who played conner in normal people.

Max Steinberg

They made an album together i don't think they dated

Dan Greene

You guys acting surprised that a guy named President Chaos is into punk rock

HATERSLAYER420

great episode, i did not expect this. i appreciate the vulnerability shown by brace, especially at the end. sincerity like that is a big reason why i love trueanon. also - and i say this as someone who loves elliot smith - there's so many fuckin crybabies in the comments. im embarrassed just reading this shit lol.

Chris Wood

You guys are the best music podcast

Lay off the booze lady

Every time brace talks about his past drug use you can hear a sense of superiority, like he's cooler than you for being addicted to drugs in the past. It's really obvious and annoying.

HATERSLAYER420

lol what the fuck are you talking about? did you listen to the episode? what a ridiculous and shitty thing to say. he makes jokes about his drug use though it was clearly a traumatic part of his life and he talks all the time about how being addicted to heroin is the worst shit he's ever experienced. if you've ever been through drug addiction or anything similarly bleak and life-altering, you'd know that sometimes joking about it is all you can do. taking something terrible and turning it into laughter, into something positive, or at least establishing a sense of control over what feels uncontrollable. shit, having a sense of humor about trauma is endearing to me (and i'd bet most people). if that isn't your thing - sure, okay. but even then i don't understand how you could come to this conclusion. i mean the last like 5 minutes of the episode are brace detailing how drugs ruined his fucking mind. about how awful it was and how it isn't romantic at all. arguing in the comments is corny but i cannot comprehend how you wrote something this stupid on the specific episode where it makes the least amount of sense lmao 🤯🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Lay off the booze lady

I understand that. Perhaps I made an insensitive comment for that I apologize. I just think he has a cavalier tone about it that makes it seem like he's indifferent sometimes. I respect brace and everything he does.

Jimothy Realname

i don't know if i got that impression, but having defeated the ultimate pleasure drug is certainly a thing to be proud of. If you're insecure about it, you can start shooting up heroin and then quit (but this is a bad idea)

Lay off the booze lady

I never experienced what brace went through with heroin, but I imagine it's pretty sweet. Which makes it so hard to quit in a life so full of shit and misery. It takes alot of strength to conquer that demon.

Mike White

I was really excited when I saw this episode because I love Elliott smith and this show. Yikes- skip this one if you have any feelings about the music being dear to you.

carl

my friend Emily and I (c. 2008) found the house he died in somewhere near or in echo park. the current tenant, a guy came out of the house with his trash cans and looked at us like "I know why you're here--go away".

Cosmetics with Kiki

What a shitty thing to say. Let us know how your own addiction and treatment go, will you? Because if we don't like your tone, we'll be sure to let you know.

Syd Beretta

Hate to break this to y'all, but Zoomers definitely know and listen to Elliott Smith... And The Smiths, but don't fuck with the Cure enough with Robert Smith the best of Smithy's

fjfffffddd

Punk and indie culture is unbearable. Dustbin of history now.

gatito

Stick to mitski kids

Marston Bicks

Look up the ariel school incident and think about how she was born in a cia (finders?) Family in Zimbabwe. The ultimate pill

Michelle C

Shes practically your age so dont take it to heart

Don Workman

The trueanon and Xavier fandoms are one big circle right? God I hope ao

Don Workman

What? I love them both and I don’t need the hosts to enjoy his shit to make a good show about his death. Very weird take.

Don Workman

Everyone should be a little more like brace in that regard

Don Workman

Did they hurt ur little feewings

Don Workman

You must possess a very fragile constitution

Don Workman

Would slap if they were tbh

Don Workman

Cry bout it LOL music sucks

Don Workman

Not really? Listen to the ep

Don Workman

Because they’re not a fuckin music show-it’s not relevant nor is anybody obligated to like or appreciate the same shit you do LOL

Don Workman

Lol what u gonna do throw a potato at em??

Don Workman

The joy of loving music should be its own reward. No need to get pissed off and whiny because somebody doesn’t like what you like. The only way to “win the game of music” is to like as much of it as possible.

Dan Z

It's a music show

Null_null

Watched bright eyes do a v drunk set the other night and thought about those famed dopey, nodding off Elliott smith (and cat power, too) shows I was just too young to witness.

Richard

Eagerly awaiting an episode that definitively proves Phoebe Bridgers is an industry plant.

em

Fuk. Yes.

Casey

I always liked his music but Heatmiser as a hardcore punk band 🤣 it’s definitely softcore punk

Kirstwb

i always forget there’s a comment section i just like to hear my stories from the californians bless their hearts

Cody perez

The electronic Waltz #2 was so sick! Good ep guys!

K Barlas

@Yung Chomsky the music was dope in this one, Michael Nyman vibes, good shit man

Sour

The Brace monologue at the end of this episode is one of the best moments in TrueAnon’s catalogue. Props to YungChomsky for the Blade Runner-esque synth he put under it, it was really fitting. I appreciate that the story doesn’t need to have a cut and dry answer but the transparency about his experience with drugs, suicidal family/friends and being low was really moving.

Jorge Michael Stefan Lima

come on guys, trip hop is nice af... listen to endtroducing by dj shadow and tricky's maxinquaye, it'll change your mind

Nk Pdlla

Really appreciated brace’s rant at the end. It was so sincere and heartfelt and cathartic. Recently lost a good friend and he perfectly captures the bafflement, anger and sincere tragedy when someone takes their life.

Matthew Webber

I have and probably always will be a huge Elliott Smith fan. Yeah I know, that makes me a dweeb, but I don't even care a lick. Elliott Smith was a musical and lyrical mastermind, super potent and subdued. This episode made me take the plunge in becoming a Patreon.

IHaveHemorrhoids

DJ Shadow is another obvious trip hop artist. RDJ2 (sp?) is one. Trip hop isn't bad, but it's a little too minor key for me all the time

Michael S. Judge

Elliott was the greatest songwriter of his generation & it's a crime that the unlicensed quack "doctor" who put him through hell, rather than being investigated and arrested, went on to convince evangelical Christians to drink bleach until they started shitting out their intestines, then told them that they were expelling "rope worm" parasites, and that this process could cure anything from the common cold to AIDS. The world of sham "rehab" and MMS (variously Miracle Mineral Solution, Miracle Medical Solution, etc.) is a one-shot case study for the necessity of universal healthcare, so that, if nothing else, pieces of shit like William Hitt won't be able to prey on vulnerable, scared, desperate people like Elliott anymore.

Michael S. Judge

And he appears to have spelled "Elliott" with two Ls and two Ts after a street in Portland, I think Elliott Avenue?, where he lived in a crusty band-guy house with Heatmiser.

K H

Sort of annoying episode. People always try to project some logical reason behind depression or other mental illness. It's true that abuse seems to cause it but it's not always so. The drive to explain the illness logically leads to puritanical blame even from the sick person. They think there must be a reason for the feelings beyond being sick and there does not need to be. Severely mentally ill people have also mutilated themselves in incredibly horrific ways, so if you're examining statistics, take that into your accounting. I have no idea if this guy I never heard of killed himself or not, but the mental illness discussion I felt warranted a response.
