o

I just realized y'all had the war nerd do voice acting here

Horse Badorties

His voice has a really "vintage" presence.

Kimble

i forget which guest said it, but the way children are totally betrayed by the adults in their lives is kinda the tragedy that brings all other tragedy. so many childhoods consumed by someone else’s warped adulthood and for what? to pass the pain? it’s sickening. sorry if this is too “think about the kids” but oh my god please someone needs to.

Kimble

teach your kid to bite i swear to god

Gibson+Altman is a winning duo. Hes great in Nashville, bob really knew how to use "character actors"

Jennifer

I went to Daytop back in 2005. So many similarities: Confrontation "therapy" "Haircuts" WAM The Big One - the hypocrisy of the leadership, as quite a few were using drugs and behaving badly.

yep

Part 1 made me subscribe, fantastic work. Looking forward to more.

Yung Chomsky is fucking killing it with this music. Best intro and outro music in podcasting

Yup

Okay, Deleuze

Dylan DeLuca

Eartha Kitt in the Synanon film!!

Sacklunch420

A few months ago they had an ongoing bit about how silly the cadence of true crime podcasts are but now they’ve unironically adopted it completely and it fucking slaps

Treppy

all my podcast friends are here… yay.

Justin Hubbard

Is the theme to this series based on the theme from the TrueAnon podcast or am I just nuts

Sampz

Hyped on that intro. I’m sitting in the lab surrounded by bags full of rhizomes (grad student (sorry) studying wetland plants). Appreciate the botanical accuracy and seeing how these wild ass plant organs translate to philosophy.

bill

Let YC cook

John Harwood

In this instance, I think that given we are dealing with anti-psychoanalytic modes of therapy, we are in firm Guattari territory (which, of course, must be deterritorialized, leading to the development of bodies without organs…blah blah blah). In any case, every one is smoking.

Sam Register

Is Gary Brecher one of your voice actors,

K H

Is this a part inspiration for A Scanner Darkly?

Hey TrueAnon, you guys are fucking killing it lately, with everything. Well done.

I’m not gonna lie to you this style is pretty whack, go back to normal please don’t make this a permanent thing

Synanon is British boarding school

Scott

This series is amazing btw

Read a thousand plateaus

Pug_luvr

Great intro. I have some dim memory of Liz talking about starting a substack? She's a good writer. I'd subscribe

Graham Hoese

Can't get over the score. YC always going off

Zzz

I’m really digging this series — great job guys 🌟

Rouxby

Intro is cold as ice, Liz and Yung Chomsky really ate and then Brace scared the shit outta me.

Sean

So good!

otis

🔥🔥🔥

otis

Because it's cool, and she's the coolest

otis

Wait, what's the game?

when I was 13 my older brother got kidnapped for one of the same programs brace experienced. I didn’t understand it at the time, but I just found the word doc with the journal entry I wrote as a teen about that night. at the time, I felt what almost seemed like survivors guilt after this, and my relationship with my brother changed a lot after it. it’s interesting now to look back so many years later. anyway, here’s what i had written, sorry if it’s long/cheesy, I was young I wake up to shouting. It is my brother, only his yelling is accompanied by deep, muffled voices that I do not know. My eyes adjust to the darkness of my room. I begin to notice the silhouettes of my parents. My mom sits on the furthest edge of my bed. My dad stands silently in the corner. There is something wrong I begin to ask them what is going on. They tell me to speak quietly, they’re hiding. They tell me Peter is going away for help. I’m confused. I ask them, “why?” What’s going on? He’d been worse this year, But things had seemed better lately. Why now? Where is he going? No response. Deep muffled voices through the wall. My brother shouts, he is upset. the voices move past my bedroom door and fade. A knock on the door disrupts the silence. My mom and dad go outside, they speak quietly and quickly to one of the deep muffled voices. They come back into my room and tell me we are going to say goodbye. We are outside in the driveway. My bare feet shifting uncomfortably, As my toes contort against my feet over sharp gravel. Two large men stand by a van with a hand on my brother’s shoulder. His face is red, swollen. A combination of tears and snot stream down his cheeks. His eyes are pink and glossy. He looks at my parents and cries out a slew of incoherent words. Why? Whats going on? How long? What did I do? There’s confusion in his voice. I can see that my mother is holding back tears, But my parents stay silent, as the deep muffled voice told them to. Desperately, my brother looks past them and at me. He cries out at me. But I’m not sure what he’s said. I am crying confused tears now and I just say, I didn’t know. I repeat this over and over to him, though he’s no longer listening. I didn’t know. I didn’t know. I didn’t know The men push him into the van and we watch as it drives away. I do not tell my friends when I go back to school the next day. I do not tell anyone ever. For a while, his friends ask me where he has been. I say he is not feeling well. I do not see my brother for five months.

Will Watson

Liz always did strike me as a Deleuze type

Tyler Wilson

Great episode. Love the series so far. Also, it's always cool to see cameos from the extended pod universe. Delighted to hear from the War Nerd AKA John Dolan AKA Gary Brecher!

Zach

... idk but it seems weird not to credit Deleuze. like it's too dorky or sexist or something to quote D&G?

Alex

YC coming in hot, damn dude

Marsha Pimentel

Did y'all see that David Hamblin was arrested

Bill

Did I detect a Will Meneker cameo?

“Ideas improve. The meaning of words participates in the improvement. Plagiarism is necessary. Progress implies it. It embraces an author's phrase, makes use of his expressions, erases a false idea, and replaces it with the right idea.”

justdave

You give me hope for the human race, thank you for sharing

lolwuthappend

Woah. I get such secondhand embarrassment when Liz does this

justdave

I fukn hate Walden soo much

Matelda

My husband had a hard childhood (mom went to prison when he was 2) & he ended up in an abusive youth "orphanage." He's talked about sessions like the ones you described in episode 1 & he said sometimes the kids were even made to hold each other down & beat each other up. He's lost a lot of friends & family to both overdose & violence. Prayers for you 🙏 (I don't know what else to say). This series is very interesting to us.

2026-09-09 19:00 I may be way off base here, but all these Chapo-performed cameo renactment-quote bits sound like they've been run through some AI Voice Deepfake shit to alter the voice?

Munir hakim

I would too but idk what substack is exactly

Zzz

Synanon I hardly knew thee

adam

Is it Vineland where they go up to Esalen? Either way I need to go back through those Pynchon California novels now that I know more about the spookyness of the sixties

Knosnothing

For real they turned quickly on that one.

Knosnothing

Actually thought the same thing. Those neuroaphasia clinics in the book are run by ex-addicts as well so makes sense PKD got his inspiration from synanon.

Knosnothing

But she's shit Deleuze and Deleuzians before so idk if that's true.

Aidan powell

You simply outdid yourself on the music here yungchomsky. 11/10

Matelda

It's what the called the meetings where they tore into each other

sgl

Incredible as usual. Maslow's Hierarchy was part of the AP Psych curriculum when I took the class in high school (2008-09) and I remember it being taught like it was some bedrock tenet of psychology. "Toward a Psychology of Being," his book, was also part of the syllabus.

Isaac Suárez

Dropping dat Deleuze reference at the beginning! Very elegantly done. Also, youngchompsky deserves an award for music and production. This series accentuates this talent, but even outside of this series, I don’t think there’s any other podcast that’s as elevated by its production quality than TrueAnon.

benafflecksamazonpackages

I remember learning Maslow’s hierarchy in my high school psych class as well. Had no idea he was such a wack job.

Emma

When Liz says she did not go to grad school I do Not believe her

Will

Glad I put this off until I had some uninterrupted time to dedicate to listening. Thank y’all for the work you do!

Cyclops giraffe

Was that the QAA and Chapo guys doin the voice overs?

Joey Foster

Loving the style and format of this series. Much love

QUARANTINE DREAM

No, you're right, the pitch warbles randomly, but not as if it were an old tape - in a very hard edged digital way

Arid

Holy shit this is a beautiful and brutal series. Yall are doing a great job reporting on this insanity. I'm so sorry it touched your life that way

Arid

Boo... the style change is appropriate to report a more personal pretty horrible experience

Rich Ranallo

I hit podcast singularity with this one: I was listening in my car at a stoplight, and right outside my open window, a guy got onto his bike and started playing the exact same episode.

Shiv

defo clocked Matt Will and La Krueger -did i miss a Julian??

Cyclops giraffe

I thought I heard Julian doing one of them

Shiv

you’re married now!

Shiv

heard him in ep 3, so i’m sure you’re correct

Shiv

also pls clap for YC’s smooth radio voice in the e3 outro

tMinozaJ

That guy? Albert Einstein

QUARANTINE DREAM

check out episode 3, intro. it's an example of a game

TrueAnonPod

we also explain it in the first episode

Dark Alliance

Robert Altman film Brace is referring to is The Long Goodbye. Henry Gibson (the Satanist doctor from The Burbs and Nazi from The Blues Brothers) plays the Syanon guy's role.

TrueAnonPod

I would never forget my favorite movie of all time…it’s actually California Split, where a Synanon member who worked for the movie as a sound engineer, got some members background roles

Lionel Boyd Johnson

They explain it in Ep. 1. It's like a struggle session crossed with the dozens crossed with an AA meeting.

Lionel Boyd Johnson

YC is amazing, what a performance. The production on these episodes is so masterful and adds so much depth. And Brace, I wish I could just give you a big dad hug and tell you everything is going to be ok. Really heartbreaking stuff, but shows your strength that you can do this series. This is the best revenge you could possibly get, besides beating them with a spiked bat and then throwing them to starving pit bulls or something.

frybreadandjam

This series is so beautifully produced and powerfully written. Made me cry from the intro onwards in episode one. Thank you for telling your story Brace. I’m angry and sorry for what was done to you and so many other children. I hope this series helps them too. You should all be nominated for some kind of award for this. Yung Chomsky: the music is so good, god damn!

frybreadandjam

I hope your husband has been able to heal as best as he can, it’s so horrific that children were abused and tortured in this way.

Emma Roper

Crazy public schools use Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to train teachers on how to address the students. “If they don’t have that foundational level of needs, how are they supposed to learn???” Lol in-fucking-sane.

Juan Barredo

The music theme reminds me of “Yandel x Anuel AA - Por Mí Reggae Muero 2020”

Nicole S

omg a thousand plathoes!!! deleuze and guattari for life they have the best insights into power structure, capitalism, and linguisticsss

Nicole S

just shoutout to rhizomes and their family
