Farting

marley

she jock on my disk until i EEE

Some Guy

Weird, with some of the takes Brace has given I figured he'd actively dislike Pere Ubu but I appreciate this

Henry

My dad was actually a roadie for Pere Ubu in the late 70s and was friendly with Peter Laughner as well (and if I remember correctly replaced Laughner in his post Ubu band Peter & the Wolves). He drew the short straw and had to room with David Thomas during their European tour because apparently Thomas was in his "Mormon phase" and annoying as fuck lol.

David

Is Ubu a reference to Ubu Roi?

Traplord

We’d all like to flee down to the Cleve and club-hop down at the flats, but some of us have responsibilities

alex

OHIO REPRESENTATION LETS GOOOO (i am so embarrassed to be from this state)

alex

go cavs and go browns tho

j

Charlemagne, The God.

Travis

thank god the wait was killing me and I used to be addicted to cocaine

JB Bowser

My band, RAZORBLADE, plays at No Class (formerly Now That’s Class) and we stock up on poppers at the store next the Hawk. Cleveland gets a bad wrap and I love it there!

aficionado

when i first started listening to punk my dad recommended the dead kennedys and listening to them made me seriously reconsider if i liked any punk music at all

Richard Cochnar

Updating California Uber Alles to be anti-Brace and Liz

Zachary Manenti

city lights bookstore… forever beatnik. cmon

Trebor

Hilarious episode, being an Ohio person myself

Aidan

It's fine to not like Oscar Wilde but please don't call him British

Rbfen

Terminal Tower was the 2nd tallest building in the world when it was built, and remained the tallest building in North America outside of New York until 1964.

Louie

Yeats and Wilde are not british. Must have someone Irish on to make up for this

Kate Derringer

I love this Rustbelt coverage can u dig into Detroit someday too xoxo

Trebor

And I purchased the book!

Mark Mountain

My coastal elite ears cannot hear an entire episode on Cleveland

hugomac

Wilde may have been Irish, but he definitely had the British taste for young lads. He's very True Anon coded.

Militia Etheridge

Whenever a punk musician dies, everyone in San Francisco sighs and thinks “it should have been Jello.”

Doug Kitchenka

Finally true anon skibbitty Ohio version

Michael S. Judge

I like the Kinks. I need a drink. I can't think. I said rrrrrAO.

Dark Belden

I like Cleveland because I like being able to afford living. Good thing I have no other standards.

Back Bench Pizza LLC

Got kicked off my college radio show for forgetting to excise the f slur from a cro mags song

Trebor

I’m definitely not cool, but was born in Ravenna OH , home of Edgar Allan Poe, and engaged in the Cleveland music scene in the 90s. So thank you TA for catering to my entertainment needs.

Oliver Crane

Ambrose Bierce seemed pretty cool

Margaret Nersten

I love that this podcast gives me a never-ending book list :)

fried egg

bonding with all the older wiser punks in my life by sending them this episode. thank u trueanon

fried egg

one of which is my older brother who is thinking of moving to ohio! serendipity indeed

buttface

I refuse to believe any of this information is culturally significant

Brendan Kneeland

All the little chicks with the crimson lips go CLEVELAND ROCKS! CLEVELAND ROCKS!

TrueAnonPod

I interviewed timmy vulgar for thrasher once…

Ciaran

Wilde and Yeats are no brits 🇮🇪

Kate Derringer

Awww I’m rereading this and he gave my old band a shoutout I remember I was so excited about that at the time :’) full circle moment

Ant koz

One of the best clubs I ever played

Ant koz

Cleveland kicks ass, now that’s class (rip) and the punk scene surrounding it to this day is the most supportive, least pretentious, cool group of people I’ve ever met and toured with, and the punk house next door to class (also rip?) put up every underground punk I know from probably 2010ish through Covid.. since moving to where I live now, almost every show I’ve gone to has been to see friends/bands from Cleveland coming into town… this episode better mention yambag or perverts again or I protest it’s existence

alex

you guys get to have everything let us have our moment

Aaron Lazar

Youngstown boy and Kent state graduate and now music dork who was formed by the Ohio thing. The most normal state that spawns outcasts like it’s going out of style (it is). So glad this history is being brought to non Ohioans

Alaric

Me screaming out "PERE UBU!" after reading the episode description like that one guy in the audience of the live Mission of Burma record as they launch into Heart of Darkness

Blank

Here in defense of meatloaf (food not music)

K H

Conceived on the SS Thaaang on the way to Terminal Tower by way of D troit.

K H

Do an episode on gay bars.

Major bit me

Anyone following what’s happening in Ecuador? A banana oligarch’s son as president, the storming of a tv station supposedly by a gang, a declaration of a new war on drugs with full American support? Very suspicious

böll

Yambag rules, nice hospitable folks too. Clevo punks always have great vibes from my touring experience.

fried egg

CSNY drop literally jumpscared me

Matt C

Cleveland Episode!!!!! Hit us up next tour

Evan Scott

I was a college radio DJ in Pittsburgh and man that really was fun as hell. Really got that feeling of living among all of these incredible pieces of public architecture built by Carnegie and all during the Guilded Age/Gospel of Wealth period - the museums there are incredible considering that it's Pittsburgh and the main branch of the public library is so incredible and beautiful. My friends and I would often study there instead of on campus.

Evan Scott

Also everyone I met from Cleveland there was really profoundly boring. Really wanna read this book now. Also this probably goes without saying but I got into Pere Ubu at the radio station so this is really webbing a lot of shit together

Michael S. Judge

Very very similar thing with THE MODERN DANCE and MARQUEE MOON on my 15th birthday, and it speaks the specificity of my essence as a loser that I might be the only guy who heard MARQUEE MOON and wanted to be Richard Lloyd, not Tom Verlaine

Michael S. Judge

they can't do an episode about every bar Brace has ever entered

Michael S. Judge

the title track on THE MODERN DANCE, which they play for a second here, is full of "Merdre! Merdre!," and the lead singer David Thomas would sometimes play Pa Ubu onstage. Also significant that the unread sequel to UBU ROI was 100 years early in its politics, in that its name in English is quite literally UBU CUCKED

fried egg

i am governor RACIAL JAKE

CT

Probably already mentioned, but the gay bar is The Hawk. And yes, place rules

Angel

Liz, you have to try glutathione IVs!!! Literally the best way to get this antioxidant since when you ingest it a lot of it gets ruined by stomach acid. ❤️

Liam Farley

Alternatively you can take MSM instead.

Liam Farley

Brace, Liz was lying, if you're vitamin D is low enough they will inject it into your body at the hospital.

George Gallowgay

Agitated by the electric eels articulates the only sensible politics of our time : “and you know what I think, I think the whole world stinks, and I don’t need no shrink, I just hate it.”

David

I am familiar with the UBU plays and even have an UBU tattoo on my arm, I had somehow never heard of Pere UBU though. Weird gap in my cultural awareness. I am really into them though, I liked what I heard.

Oliver Crane

This was really cool, made me go back and listen to The Modern Dance again. Idk if you like the Mekons or related bands but they had a pretty massive impact on me as a teenager, I think Jon Langford would be a fascinating person to interview about punk and leftist activism in Britain and America.

Twee247

Love you guys but you’re sorely mistaken about Oscar Wilde, Brace. Dude was cool as fuck. The Irish were exponentially more cool than the French in the 1890s. Dorian Grey, Dracula, The Tower, some of the best writhing of the turn of the century. Baudelaire, Huysman and all the French decadent losers accomplished little in comparison.

Andrew Brown

Obviously as a pittsburgher you gotta blast ppl from Cleveland in the postscript haha

ryan

i've lived in portland, brooklyn, queens, chicago, have spent significant time in the bay area and LA, and all over florida and basically the whole country and a couple years ago landed in cleveland and can easily say it's by far my fav city i've ever lived in

ResilientBastard

So basically Baby Brace played a bunch of Screwdriver on the air?

Instantdumbass

Class is the only bar in America. Cleveland rocks

Red Scare Spice

Omg please Liz do a discord on skincare!

Migz

The description of Clevelanders being not necessarily hicks but deeply provincial is true of most Ohioans - second hand embarrassing whenever people talk about our major cities like teeming metropoles where the miracles of urbanity are at your fingertips

TrueAnonPod

I maybe mentioned this on the pod cast but my old italian homie named fraucho lived in the basement there for a while

TrueAnonPod

Timmy's great, re-reading this...I remember the squid act he used to do...human eye/Timmys Organism both rocked

sam

kent read kent write kent state

Evan Scott

The gay bar in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is (was?) called THE STALLION

James Cleary

Is Éireannach iad Wilde agus Yeats, a chara! Also Wilde's stuff is the funniest shit in the English language other than maybe Bill Watterson

Dense Lightning

Oh my goodness! I love Pere Ubu!! I remember hearing Modern Dance for the first time in high school and watching those live songs on YouTube the performance of Birdies blew my fucking mind

Horseloverfat

You’re never alone with a schizophrenic rules. Will also stand by the s/t

🫶🏽

met biafra at kilowatt... talked my fucking ear off for an hour, worst exp of my life dead ass

Alex

Oscar wild was the austin powers of his generation. Its true, the guy fucked a lot.

Eggie

Same, and I need a drink.

Eggie

I recently watched "Killer Nerd" and I really hope Toby is doing great. A bunch of his stuff is on YouTube including the old Eddie Marshall Show stuff. What an icon.

DeadPrince

I’m here for the best “writhing” of the turn of the century.

Lulu

As an Irish listener, I've gotta jump in here and say Oscar Wilde and W.B Yates were Irish! That's not British cool, that's Irish cool 😎 🇮🇪

Kate Derringer

The human eye squid thing rocked my shit when I was 17

dan

ive found that a cool punk scene tends to grow in a dogshit city

Hal Warren

Harvey Pekar! American Splendor! Cleveland!

Hal Warren

Bram Stoker was gayer than Jonathan Harker's cum

Hal Warren

Also, Brace, the pulp mill in Tacoma is CLOSED and the aroma is gone! Facts.

Brian Ward

Brace do a pod without calling someone autistic (impossible)

Mícheál ÓhÉineacháin

I really love these episodes. It's so nice to get a deep cultural insight into a town you don't know much about, I love hearing you guys talk about San Fransisco for the same reason

Hayley

Wow so on the nose my cleveland dad truly loves ham salad

Richard Rodriguez

I played drums with x_x on a west coast tour and nyc date a few years back. Love Craig Bell, John Morton is a very lovable psychopath. Will always feel honored to have played with those guys even decades after their "prime". Much love to all the clevo freax reading this and listening to this episode

Graham B

Love the Cleveland punk history! My uncle lived and died in the Cleveland music scene from the 70s to the 2000s. Feels good to learn about this, like I’m connecting to his world. Just bought the book for more!

alie lerm

Omfg the So I Married an Axe Murderer clip- I see you Yung Chomsky, namaste

Grandma_Caprio

When I first read the description I thought it said Artie Lange and was like whoa whoa whoa stop the clock….the. I reread it…great show as always comrades!

pope of chilli town

Can someone put all the songs and bands mentioned here into a Spotify playlist or something

K W

The spectre of Drew Carey is low key haunting this ep

John Atherton

what is the official trueanon opinion on Retina A

Andrew

Patiently waiting for the balloon talk

Jon Juan Travis Hallowell

I once asked a friend is they ever heard of R.D. Lang and they were like "Artie Lange? Yea of course, we watched MadTv together," and it slaughtered me.

JB Bowser

Friends of ours own/run the place and even let the bands stay in the apartment upstairs. Nicest people, it’s a fucking blast. Yinz should come thru Pittsburgh next tour, we don’t throw phones, can’t afford a new one haha <3

Matt

EDGER ALLEN POE IS COOL!

Norbur

Oh man, the Irish were cool. Also the Russians (Dostoyevsky) and almost every sailor from any country, cool. Celtic knots aren't cool but the f*cked up Bohemian nardowell is def Irish. Also, Byron was evil, but cool. So was Beowulf. The end

malpertuis

You got Brace to do slugging?

alie lerm

Now that's class is still running as no class! They still doing punk shit and an occasional techno or trance night. Can still buy poppers at the headshop next door also

Blank

Trueanon is and has always been a one ep/week podcast

RMNB

Me at the start of every episode: I don’t know if I care about this topic. Me at the end of every episode: this is my personality now

Adam klopp

If anyone is curious about current Cleveland weirdo punk shit, some great bands to check out are Perverts Again, Cruelster, Show Pink, Yambag, Donkey Bugs, The Hell, & Woodstock 99’

Adam klopp

True anon live at prototype?

Richard Rodriguez

Laughner may have died here, but TrueAnon would literally never be caught dead here.

uya

i used ro get d3 injections. it was GREAT

Parochial Nimrod

This is secondhand info from my goofy RISD nerd ex punk boss but apparently Greil Marcus lives in Glendale now

Dylan Carr

cleveland confidential is a great compilation album

Micheline

We were a big James Gang house growing up

Christian Bendillo

My whole family from my mother’s side is from northern Ohio, mostly between Norwalk and Cleveland. My grandfather worked his whole life at the Avon lake Ford plant. I even had a great uncle that played for the browns back in the leather helmet days. Even with that background, having been to Cleveland a few times, and knowing a decent amount about the history, I still found this episode so fascinating. I’m really interested in learning more about all of this, especially the architecture. I wonder if there’s some kind of vintage Cleveland guide, because I’d love to do a visit up there and explore some of this stuff.

Andrea Alberti

As someone who was raised in Akron, has family in Cleveland, and currently lives in Chicago, I was both excited and mildly insulted by this episode. My granddad owned an architecture firm in Cleveland in the 60s and 70s, and they designed a lot of municipal buildings, so I'm interested in the book!

Rene Saller

I got to see Pere Ubu perform in the outdoor quad of my college in the late 80s. Incredible show from a fantastic band. I once wrote a column about bands fronted by former or active Jehovah's Witnesses, and Pere Ubu was always toward the top. I might consider converting if he showed up at my front door to evangelize.

Rene Saller

Also, count me among the fans of Aquaphor and skin tips by Liz.

Scott

Great episode and I am going to buy AIF on payday. My hopelessly uncool British understanding, and there is no shade here, is that Cleveland would definitely have gone for Brexit.

DaFunkBackToDaPunk

So happy to listen to an episode about ohio that doesn’t involve pedos

Evan Scott

I was a WPTS boy but there was a bunch of social crossover for sure

Carine

Awwww. I had my first date at a Pere Ubu show (David Thomas on vocals lineup)

B

Clevelander here. The correct word to describe Clevelanders is parochial: “ having a limited or narrow outlook or scope.” It’s absolutely true, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else

Scott

Appreciate it 🤓

Mark Owen

30 seconds on a one way ride

Mark Owen

Meatloaf is '40s-'50s food. I still like it.

Mute_witness

It doesn’t count…..period

Jonah Stocks ladd

The wpa did a guide series of alot american cities id look into that

Brian Houlehan

Lots of poverty and faded grandeur in Cleveland; lived here all my life; underground scene has ebbed and flowed forever here, but corporate rock has always predominated.

Ant koz

Rubbermate, piss me off, real regular, vanilla poppers…. Just watch the “enjoy Cleveland” comp on YouTube although it may be a decade old by now

Ant koz

And you’re the best and I miss you dearly

Bessie

Please Liz! A skincare episode! Or a med spa episode! Or a bullshit serums episode! Or a toxic trends in the ~health and beauty space~ oh pleeeease!

zach

interesting listen as a Clevelander myself. agree with a lot of the characterizations e.g. of downtown, disagree that Celevelanders in general are “provincial” or “don’t travel” (plenty of transplants here as in any other city, though of course less so than in places like Chicago and NYC—i came here from upstate New York myself). may check out the book!

Sampz

Dallas is the worst. An entirely soulless city

GoyBulletStopper

Are you talking about the Boneyard? (Punk house)

bruce

im from ohio, my grandpa was a national guard reservist during vietnam. he almost got called into kent state lmao his take is "they should have killed everybody"

bruce

i think anybody in regionally large cities in ohio can only be properly described as a Provincial, especially given their little cheugy "revitalization" gentrifying trends. i mean come on they're pod people, they live in 5 over 1s and eat the chain restaurant bibimbap

Timothy

Can Liz do an episode on the skincare industry? And perhaps a beauty how-to?

Steo

Oscar Wilde is Irish. No Brits invited.

Christopher Price

they weren't British but they were prots, so difference without distinction.

Ryan Johnson

Disappointed there was no deep dive into Drew Carey and Trent Reznor

Michael S. Judge

get THE MODERN DANCE and DUB HOUSING, and remind yourself while listening that this was Cleveland c. 1977 and that these guys hadn't even heard the UK punk or post-punk shit, they were just making it up in their garages ... and You Will See

cmanenarwhale

im always amused by the name b&o (baltimore and ohio) railroad. bc its a living testament to the rust belt and its former glory. that at one time baltimore and the state of ohio were glamorous. #bringbackohio

Tom

Bad guest
