Enjoy my power point presentation for the first 15 mins while we discuss what just happened within the last two episodes of the show - before we dive into the second half!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts x

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I think you should watch My Dress Up Darling. It is not only a great rom-com, but it deals with so much more about people...also it's wholesome yet echee. Some aspects are similar to this. . Plus season 2 is coming out next month. My take on the frog scene is he was about to go too far but stopped himself. She still has no romantic feelings as far as she knows, but nay be catching feelings without realizing it yet. She is a bit like Frieren when it comes to that, and I that's why we got that flashback to when she was a baby. On some kevel she knows she might have feelings for him but realizes that she knows that she doesn't get it. It is definitely interesting. The "Do you want to find out part". I am not so sure that i have watched a scene like that before. I watch more Rom-Coms over the past couple of years. I kinda dropped the Shonen for the most part. Especially the long ones. That scene is not something that is in them for the most part. Again, at least he stopped himself.

Alex

SMUT?!?! lmao. It was hilarious how both you and Maomao were holding y'all's breath together. Maybe a bit of innocent awakening for both of you? Jk jk Jokes aside, I really appreciate how mature Apothecary Diaries is. It is rare to get stories with this level of sensitivity and maturity in combination with historical placement and respect. Most of the "mature" anime tends to lean in to violence and gore and it really contrasts with what Apothecary Diaries has done.

charlie

It is the current Empress Dowager that has done things like getting rid of Slavery and making more Eunuchs

Jon

Sad ending song because Maomao misses the frog lol.

Emmanuel Davies

I’ve seen series like Nana where the characters flat out have sex with each other on screen so it’s not the first time I seen something like that scene in mainstream anime but it did catch me off guard simply because I didn’t expect it from this series

FinalMasterM

Manifesting that you watch Mushoku Tensei now that you're reacting this way to some spicy anime moments. But I also think you'll enjoy Ascendance of a Bookworm for having a great story and memorable female lead.

FinalMasterM

*Ecchi Yes, this series also, it's short, sweet and season 2 is near.

Alex

She is not ready for Mushoku Tensei

Ryne

Just so you know, I didn't skip even a second of the video. Really appreciate hearing your thoughts/analysis of the situation at the start of the video. I'm probably going to pick up the first few volumes when I go on vacation the week of our birthdays. Since the anime is on break that week, reading the first 2 or 3 volumes would get me ready. Every time we see more of Lishu, the more I want someone to protect her. She deserves so much better. Anyways, thanks for the reaction. It was great as always, and I'm looking forward to your reaction for episode 14.

Kelven

Holy crap I'd also vote for Ascendance of a Bookworm. Great show!

Ben

its feels like more and more lately we are getting more adult leaning anime every season or at least they feel more comfortable being risque but there are a lot of great josei and shojo where sex and sexuality are just a thing. something to remember with maomao and her love language/ how she approaches romance to to consider her parents. lakan only had eyes for her mother and her mother despite being a courtesan never had sex before lakan. they never said "i love you" as far as we saw and while they got along it was in a way normal people probably wouldnt have called romantic. so maomao has both her upbringing and her parents personalities to contend with when it comes to feelings of love and romance. i do agree that little by little she is opening up to jinshi even if she has a 6 foot thick wall of denial in the way

Chris Ridenour

'I don't know if it means anything (masks)'. Oh it means something.

FinalMasterM

Enjoy listening to your thoughts as you progress through series, most reaction watchers don't do that or do a huge stream where they digest seasons/arcs afterwards.

FinalMasterM

Myne is such a great character, I only wish the animation was given a better time, but that doesn't take away from it.

W

If you watched this the day after last episode, then how far ahead of the Patreon release are you atm? The way good reactors (like yourself) can stretch content is insane sometimes, 16min of interesting yapping of a post episode before even starting the current one 👍 Just like the last OP this new one might have alot of references, so be careful with how deep your analys of it is, if you want to stay away from spoilers! It's so fun to see when past events/teasers finally click! New song is a banger btw! Cool thought of the red/green circle thing, didn't think of that! Brushing your thoughts aside sounds like something a certain cat would do 😜 A long video deserves a long comment 😁

W

Mushoku Tensei is multiple levels away from this 😬 Ascendance of a bookworm would be awesome! 🤩 Also Classroom of the Elite would be cool! 😃

wanira 11

I love how complicated these characters are. For example the frog scene, which you analyzed so well at the start, has so many layers if you look at their expressions and body language. I love how the anime portrayed that scene ❤

Jan Negrey

The three of them are power trio.

wanira 11

Also, this op is my favourite music wise, the song is so good!! Immediately added to my playlist ❤ visually wise my favourite still remains op 3

Jan Negrey

Shisui was the one who thought about the trick to gather moths for Jinshi being "the moon goddess".

Lulu-chan

I'm glad you shared my comment and view of the JinMao situation. I totally agree with everything you said! I really love your reactions to this series. It won't be long until you are totally caught up and will have to watch weekly (depending on the amounts of drops).

RiShinMarco

Well forcefull male characters with "mostly" submissive women are a pretty common troupe in Josei but can also happen in Shoujo (Maid-sama would be a example). It's just an age things as Josei is the counterpart to Seinen while Shoujo is the counterpart of Shounen. And the setting and what is happening in the story is most of the time more mature and/or brutal than in Shounen/Shoujo. So no it isn't the first time and the more LN's I'm reading the more I get confronted with such scene way more often.

ThrakazogZ

Being fully caught up myself, I noticed things in this play through of the episode I hadn't noticed the first time I watched it.

Caradoc Elmet

I was a little disturbed by Jinshi's actions in the previous episode, but only because I know Maomao has zero interest in that sort of interaction with Jinshi. That's the context making all the difference. If they were lovers or heading that way but not quite there yet, it wouldn't have bothered me at al but obviously the writer has said flat out that he's never had any intention of Jinshi and Maomao being romantically connected to each other. That's why it seemed quite horrific to me at the time. I was actually shouting at the screen for Maomao to kick him off, which I never do, but I just wanted that to end as quickly as possible. I hope the writer sticks to his guns and doesn't have the two of them become romantically entangled just because a vocal section of the audience wants that. I would definitely stop watching if the story went that way. I must say I was more shocked by the animation, which they have repeated quite a lot, of Maomao's searching hand trying to figure out what she's holding. I know it was just her hand moving on a black background but it was still more than I expected from this anime and I really hated that bit. I get it. She obviously knew instantly what it was but still she wasn't expecting to find one of those, because: eunuch. That's why her puzzling brain was directing her to feel it out like that but it was still not necessary to animate that grasping hand. That was the worst part of the episode for me.

Caradoc Elmet

Regarding your other question about Maomao’s “love language” I have to repeat that the writer has stated he’s never had any intention of Jinshi and Maomao becoming romantically entwined. He has been surprised by the way some of the audience has interpreted their relationship and seen hints at romance where he hasn’t written any in. He says it’s all the wishful thinking of some of the audience interpreting things to fit their own wishes. I have enjoyed some of the moments I’ve thought hinted at a slowly blossoming romance but I don’t want to see it bloom into anything. I love their relationship when they are just working together and respecting each other’s abilities. There aren’t a lot of animes that carry that through without trying to slip some romance in, at least when the relationship is between different genders. I’d like to see a good depiction of a male/female relationship based solely on mutual respect. Jinshi obviously has feelings for Maomao but when they’re working together he’s capable of putting them aside and not letting them cloud his judgement. I’d prefer his interest in her was curbed but at least it doesn’t rule him completely. I don’t feel Jinshi’s feelings for Maomao add anything of interest to the story. I’ve seen unrequited love stories so many times and that’s all it’s ever going to be unless the writer caves in to audience demand and gets all fan-servicey, which would ruin it for me. We don’t need him to be in love with her to have him panic when he thinks she’s in trouble or worry about her getting into dangerous situations. My oldest friend is the opposite gender to me and I worry about her all the time. I’d like to see Jinshi be a bit more like Himmel* the Hero who loves Frieren but doesn’t actually bother her with his feelings. The rest of this anime seems quite unique but the unrequited love is so cliched it just doesn’t really fit for me. *side note off topic: Himmel must be Portuguese for mascara because I’ve been watching a Brazilian react to Frieren and every time they talk about Himmel the subtitles translate to English as, “The Mascara Hero”. It makes me laugh every time lol

Caradoc Elmet

When they say that Lady Lishu was sent to a monastery it’s a translation error. She went to a nunnery, not a monastery. They correct the error in the next episode but I wanted to get it in here quickly because between the two episodes I was severely creeped out by the thought of a young girl being given to a monastery! I love Lady Lishu but her life is sad enough without that being added into the mix of her tragedy. I love Xiaolan as well. I just had a thought while watching this about my wishes for her. It would be great if Lady Lishu offered Xiaolan a position as one of her ladies in waiting. They would be so good for each other and Xiaolan could continue attending the school that Jinshi set up. They would become friends because you can’t not love Xiaolan and Lady Lishu needs good friends more than any other character in the show. Xiaolan is actually my favourite side character. I’m just so happy every time she appears in an episode. It’s just her cheerful innocence that gets me I think. She’s always happy and enthusiastic. I love characters like that.

wanira 11

The author is actually female and she has indeed said she was surprised at first that readers were interpreting it that way, because it wasn't her intention at first to write a romance. However, since then she clearly has implemented the romance subplot through her novels very deliberatly. I don't know if you've read the novels, but their relationship definitetly has progressed.

DocGreen

In terms of handling mature themes there are more anime out there such as black lagoon and even more goonerish stuff like chained soldier. But apothecary really does it well probably because it's based more off of a LN than a shonen manga. But you should really try anime like mushoku Tensei or black lagoon if want more mature rated anime especially mushoku because it does things that no other anime does

Caradoc Elmet

Oh no! lol thanks for the warning. I didn't know the author was female. I have only heard about it all from watching other reactors and most seem to assume the writer is male and I guess I should have checked before repeating but when so many say the same thing my lazy sheep mind takes over lol. My apologies to the author for misgendering her.

Wildflower Ink

We should have a light novel book club. I’ve been reading the first volume and it illuminates so much and also provides some interesting looks at how mediums and audience can create changes in how events are shown even if they aren’t that different.

Milosz Skowronski

Xiaolan is precious. She's my favourite sidekick too. She's cute, but not daft. She's nice, but not naive. She's humble, but also ambitious in her own way. She's living in the present, but also looking to the future. She's a deceptively complex character and I absolutely love that about her.

Buzzard

I joyfully watched the entire starting conversation, so now I'm an official Flexie goat. Thank you. It's an honor.🐐 I agree with what you said about Jinshi. The conflict he was feeling inside must have been tremendous. His frustration finally got the better of him and he (momentarily) lost control, regrets it, but still can't stop. The way his emotions were portrayed on his face was outstanding. The new OP is great, although the masks did put me off the first time I saw it. Later on they'll make sense. ☺

FlexiejayAnime

That is a great idea! We could even make a channel in the discord for that 🔥 but we already have some fun ppl sharing art and talking about the novel in there 🥹🩵 I can’t wait to get mine

Laura Bea

i don't think this is true though? the author has been pretty explicit about the fact that although she initially wasn't trying to set up a romance between the two, the reception of the characters made her change course - apparently even friends and loved ones were asking her about when the two were going to get together LOL

blunt

That’s 100 percent her love language. She falls for the real him, the 19 year old who is sillier and more doting. Not the arrogant boss 24 year old Jinshi. He put her off by being fake. But she finds the real him endearing and learns him exactly like your commenter said.

Itz A Dolphin

agreed, but they are all good in my opinion. I like openings that don't feel like spoiler and Apothecary Diaries does great OPs.

Itz A Dolphin

Shisui, where you going now that Lishu is here.

Chris Ridenour

They 'handled' the Suirei situation by kinda just sweeping it under the rug and not telling anyone she actually escaped.

WodanarFogala

To be fair Chainsaw Man had some 'questionable' scenes too

WodanarFogala

In terms of OP/ED. I would say good OP but the worst one so far, and definitely the best ED of the series. I actually wish the ED song was the OP

The claw-like thing on the finger is a noble lady's fingernail guard. Chinese aristocracy fashion statement.

Buzzard

Dan Da Dan Ep 1 was pretty graphic, with the abduction and potential r***.

YaeliEz (Yael)

Great discussion! And I learn a lot from the tidbit that you get from the comments. Can’t wait for you to catch up! I have been watching the last 3 episodes week to week and it has been so tough after benching all the episodes before.

Tonka Fran

Jinshi is a moral gray character He will continue making mistakes or having questionable actitudes toward Maomao. It’s important to understand that isn’t really builted as a love story, and their characters don’t will be perfect either.

Gpinko

WowowowowWOW I LOVE your analysis of the frog scene last episode?? Because yes it’s riveting, funny, shocking, there’s sooooo much going on with both Jinshi and Maomao in this scene internally and based on their situations in this moment. I don’t have much to add because you literally said everything that I would say about it, and you are amazing for this discussion. WOW AND THE MOON analysis I love this show. I love this show so much. It’s so beautiful and well rounded, it is easily one of my favorite shows from the very start. I actually love the second OP over the first! You are in for more……more!

Caradoc Elmet

Apparently you're correct. Somebody else explained it for me in another comment. Thank you anyway for trying to help. I find it a sad thing to have done to such a promising show so I've stopped watching it now. I hope you continue to watch and enjoy it if that's the sort of thing you're into, though. I've still got the first season I can ejoy if I want to rewatch it so I'm a little sad but I'll get over it. Cheers :)

Alex Hencher

Looking at the differences between artistic mediums is really cool. I did it with Solo Leveling, going anime, manga, then the novel. And the really fascinating thing is how many tiny details from the anime or manga make so much more sense in the novels because they have time to explain. But at the same time you can see where the novels are trimmed down to the absolute bare essentials, and that's what gets turned into the manga and then anime. They all capture the same magic, but being able to see where the different artists choose to put emphasis on a scene is enlightening, and gives phenomenal context to the characters and story. But the novels always have the nuance and subtly that the manga and anime just can't afford to capture.

Alex Hencher

I feel like Lady Lishu missed a serious opportunity in not making Xaolin one of her ladies in waiting, or at least servant girls. They have to be very close in age, and they seem like they'd make perfect friends. Because they current Emperor isn't a creep, it seems like Lady Lishu doesn't have anyone close to her age that she could spend time with. And after everything that poor girl has been through she could use someone like Xaolin to brighten her day and force her to enjoy the little moments.

Kazuma

I think if a romance is well done it can definetely add a lot to a story. I would say the complete opposite of what you said: mainstream animes are already full of "power of friendship" tropes and there isn't a single actual romance in them, just fan service and some red faces or awkward situations here and there. 0 real romance development. I think that's why the fans were so eager to find one in AD at the smallest hint of it lol. Why do you think Jinshi worrying for MaoMao becomes less valuable if it's out of love instead of friendship ? That's weird to me, I would never compare the two situations, I find it equally beautiful. As for Frieren, I bet you all my bank account that if Himmel felt Frieren ready to understand people's feelings and her own, he would have been more direct with his advances. He kept it discreet only because of that. So there are romantic feelings, there just was no points in verbalizing anything about it, he chosed to show it through his actions as he hoped that one day she felt different about life and thus about his attentions. And she did start to explore these feelings. That's part of why the show made us cry and cry... You seem to hate love depictions but you mix it with fan service and superficial display of affection.

Clarissa

Its interesting you caught Suirei at the beginning but but not what Maomao meant by Shisui looking familiar. I was the opposite, I clocked Shisui from S2E1 although its was really the episode where she was collecting the caterpillars at night that I messaged my friend who had already seen it, and was like am I right??? He just went 🤐 Whereas Suirei i only realised when it was revealed to MaoMao

Cyber

we needed her heart rate back non stop this season!

Ilsuk Yang

Maomao being impressed by Shisui in the bath is hilarious lol. Funniest moment is Xiaolan and Shisui being creepy with Seki-u though 😂😂😂 Maomao's such a sweetie with Lishu. Lishu needs more people like Maomao around her. Maomao's only seems scary at first...well, I guess she is just scary sometimes lol

Raven Leaf

Talking about your pre-watch discussion, It's a bit vulgar to put it this way, but I think Maomao was more okay with what Jinshi was doing than she wants to admit. When you see her ask herself if she should kick him to stop him, if you watch, she very subtly spread her leg wider. Edit: No its not the first time I've seen that in mainstream anime. Unfortunately it tends to be a bit worse when you get into Senien and Josei, but there is quite a few big names that have scenes that are somewhat similar. There are some Ecchi anime that can be considered mainstream and they REALLY push the envelope.

Raven Leaf

For the openings and such, I think its not worth rating the OP until you're near the end. Every single time, the Openings are a jumbled mess and it becomes progressively more and more clear as you get further into the season. This one throws a wrench on it because rather than hint at what comes, it reflects on the past and then you're trying to find symbolism. So in true fashion, the opening is going to remain strange until near the end.

Fiza Nadeem

Yes guys we need flexie for s3 she can defend jinshi😭😂 I just can't wait.

Alex Hencher

Dude girls are weird, I came from a theater backround, and they were always feeling everyone up, and talking about it. I can't remember a single time in a green room where the dudes were like "lets do the same". You got changed where you got changed, but none of us were excited about the prospect.
