It felt familiar because the scene is mirroring the start of ep1 when her and the old party arrived to the city after defeating the demon lord, they were talking about getting a job etc. Another thing, yeah, in the OP, Himmel is always looking back at her… until he isn’t

I think the beginning of the OP the field of flowers Frieren is in is the field she created around Flamme's grave, with the petal being her memory of her, and as the song goes on, more petals appear and end up in her hand, which she clasps with a smile, which are the memories of everyone she remembers fondly. It's really beautiful.

I love all the symbolism in near the end of the episode. 1. As fern and stark have their heart to heart we see two moths dancing around the flame, which to me is the two dancing around their feelings for each other. 2. After they make up, the next day we see two geese in the background, geese are known to mate for life showing the two are stuck with each other going forward. 3. I think its a road side shrine and maybe not a grave? With the two apples as offering for protection as they two travel together 4 and of course the three birds flying away together as frieren, stark and fern on their journey free in their wandering. I would have loved to have sat in on the story boarding session for this episode. And one last bonus symbolism! In the ending himmel turns into a flame in frierens lantern lighting her way through the dark and the passing of time :)

The ED for this is something special, I thought the jjk season 3 ending was gonna jump to one of my favorites, and then frieren just knocked it out of the park. That animation style is just unparalleled.

i loved this - also before she picks up the blue flower petal she is sitting in the emptiness from missing Himmel, but with Fern and Stark she realizes what she has while they are still with her so she exitedly jumps up to adventure together with them

I feel like jjk is the most hype thing happening right now, but this just touches my soul in a way that nothing else does. I'm so happy this anime is back. I cried like a baby during this episode and not for reasons like the first episode of the first season, but just because I feel so overwhelmingly warm and fuzzy inside lol. It's so good.

Anime of the year is here and it already went viral in less than a day! Frieren reminds me so much of the lord of the rings especially this episode since Tolkien also was against humans destroying nature. It will only get better from here!

So glad to be back with all these characters and the episode felt like the perfect start for this season and show. Sad it’s gonna be kinda short but I’m happy they’re taking their time with it too and giving it the treatment it deserves cause it was already looking great this first episode. Going to be a fun journey to Ende again while it’s back. Also love that we got the same Artist for the ED this season, the visuals are beautiful and the OP and ED really fit the vibe of the show so well.

I;m calling it, Stark and Fern are gonna have a bunch of kids and grow old together and at least one of those kids will join Frieren's party in the future. Also I don't think those are graves, more like shrines to help travelers on their journeys, but that's just my guess.

I don't think that was a grave stone at the end, I'm pretty sure that was a road side shrine, people would leave offerings at them in order to pray for safe travel.

Thank you for a delightful reaction to a wonderful episode. Frieren's back YAY! Wirbel's around 34. He was 5 when demons started acting up after the death of Himmel the Hero and he promised the nameless girl he'd kill all the demons so she could return to their village, and it's been 29 years since then. So not that far out of his 20's. And yay for Frieren noticing awkwardness. She's come so far!! Not that she has any idea what to do about it. That's priest work.

I just realised that in the ED Frieren carries the blue flame of what was Himmel around in the lantern. Similar to how she followed the butterfly that is Fern in the first seasons ED. Also, I would recommend you watch the MV to the ED, The Story of Us (most probably what Himmel is writing down), on milet‘s YT, if just for yourself („how would Frieren look if it was real?“).

I'm pretty sure the reason why Frieren says "This feels familiar" at the start of the episode, is because it is almost a direct comparison to how S1 EP1 started. Them talking about having to find work, the way she looks up from her book, everything is almost identical.

Since you mentioned it yeah Nobuhiko Okamoto is one of my favorite male voice actors, while it feels like he is kind of typecast into the more aggressive roles like Bakugo or Genya his range is actually incredible.

Stark could've taken the stone and followed behind like 10 feet away from them if they had a magic merchant nearby. If not they could've sent it to Äußerst via carriage or something. There were ways to do that but it would've been a significant detour. On the plus side they wouldn't have to worry about money for a while.
