Justice for Sanji !!

Ryan Searle

The Sanji thing was hilarious when it first aired, we just as a society particularly in the west have lost any sense of humor. People are to easily offended. We’ve always had characters like this Master Roshi especially the dub, Jirarya, and Miroku.

Dominic D

People be acting like you're only allowed to have one dream and also it's just a joke. To me Sanji is an interesting character because he has all the makings of a cool, suave, gentlemanly figure but his own obsessions and inability to control himself make him an unhinged freak. It's totally fine not to like that characterization, but I don't understand when people act like it is an inconsistency. From the very beginning he has always had a habit of undermining the genuinely impressive, considerate, and loving actions he has taken by immediately losing control of himself and acting like a horny fool. One of his problems is that he holds woman to such an unrealistic standard in the first place, with that comes his considerate and caring nature, but it is also the source of his paternalism towards and objectification of women. That has always been front and center from the moment he joined the story and as time goes on and the world itself became more dialed up and absurd, so did things like Sanji's characterization. But when people act like it's somehow degrading his character or betraying anything about him that was established before, I just can't agree with that. Is Oda exaggerating it in ways that maybe he did not in early arcs? Definitely. But I think it is a misread of Sanji's character to not see the consistency in it. It won't be the first time this conversation happens or the last, but in reality one of his flaws in the first place is deifying women, which makes him care for them and protect them, but also unable to defend himself or his friends from them, unable to control himself around them, and unable to treat them as equal individuals. It's not a rewrite, it's the point.

John Paul

Sanji just placed 3rd in the 2nd world poll. There is more love than hate for Sanji big time.

SJ

Sanji is a perv because without that character trait, he would literally be almost perfect, which is boring. Strong, noble as a (mr) prince, chivalrous, gentle, caring, empathetic and a great cook

Erik Larsen

Now that you've finished Zoro's duel with Ryuma you can see "Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation", a one-shot adaptation of one of Oda's earliest works that shows Ryuma's past and the dragon he fought. Oda, never being one to waste a good character, worked the samurai into One Piece and gave him a hell of a fight as a send-off.

Chris Hikichi

The expectation of Chopper and Robin to fight better is understandable, but remember they're pretty much fighting Sanji and Zoro. That's a bit of a miss match.

Magvin

The Sanji perv gag is a bit annoying in anime - in manga it's not as prevalent and less exaggerated.

Funky_Fritters

It's called "Wano" because those are the noises people make when they think about how many episodes away it is.

Irvin Mugo

I wouldn't say "against his character." It's not a first for him to be a creep sometimes or pervy. When Kalifa told him that he would have to strip search her for the key, he did a whole ass dive lmao, and she literally kicked the hell out of him. He also bought Nami and Vivi (crew members btw) inappropriate dancer uniforms in Alabasta so he could start at them. It's an exaggeration of his character, but I wouldn't say it's against it. I love Sanji, and I think you just gotta take the good with the bad, na'mean

Irvin Mugo

Oh shit! I said "gotta take the good with the bad" in my comment below (or above lol) too before I finished watching what you were saying, then I heard you say it 😂

SgtOddity

The double fight round-up! Hell yeah.

Sakarael

It's pretty easy. Oda just wanted to make a joke he found funny. Western audiences overreact like hell because of how our society developed in the past years. When this came out back in the day I can't remember people being so worked up about it. It really is not that deep as people make ot out to be.

Irvin Mugo

Sanji never has a shortage of haters 😂😂 we stand wit him though....most of the times

Silvanus2004

Thank you for your time adressing the Sani-bashing. As I watch manga and anime since the late 80s/early ninties, the peep on girls/being pervy was a standard trope for so many stories. This was just normal (and still is) in Japan. The difference is mainly that the Japanese strictly divide between media fantasy and real-world behavior. What is acceptable in stories is massivly frowned upon in real life. This border does'nt exit in this form in western media anymore where fantasy now more equals real behavior. Thus the real life disappointment and hate with fantasy characters in fantasy stories and worlds. I also find his massive "interest" in the female charm overbearing (more so with Toeis interpretation). But to ignore all the good in Sanji completely due to that, is just sad.

100Rainy

Yeah Usopp's fights are always PEAK

Irvin Mugo

HEEL NAH! If Usopp hit me with that combo of crickets in my clothes and a giant mega hammer, I'm SLEEP! 💤💤💤😵😴😴😴 Out cold!

Clarissa

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Manu

Finally the next Flexie One Piece reaction :)

kirk poss

Every One Piece character has a massive flaw. Oda gives them all flaws even the ones who are legends. The ones who seem like gods have flaws. Thats why I love these characters.

Allram

What is the big deal ? Sanji wants to look :O he is also a very loving and honorable person, the fact that he is a perv doesnt imo take away any of the cool points about him. And I think many men and women have an inner sanji, they just dont act on it, and he does coz he is a cartoon character :)

Fixing

Idk what happened cuz I was lost but glad you're back Flexie I missed your one piece reaction videos

Mitchel

When it comes to Sanji. I think you're taking the word "dream" to literally. To get the clear clear fruit so he can be perv and watch girls bathe isn't a goal like finding the all blue. Its more of a fantasy. And a person can simultaneously hold private fantasies or unconventional desires (often labeled as "perverted") and exhibit polite, respectful, or traditional manners (chivalry) toward women. And that's exactly what Sanji is, the both sides of man when men are around women. And Sanji being a real man puts chivalry first.

Antoine Voillemin

You should watch now the story of shimotsuki Ryuma.. it was, i think one of oda first story before one piece... I think it's available everywhere.

Mitchel

2 to 4 episodes a week (maybe you watch more im just basing it off uploads) it will take you 2.5 to 5+ years to get to Wano.

Zarathos Daimaoh

Glad you're better as well. About Sanji, while I will not claim that some don't truly like him... I do feel that a few project their unlikely-to-be-fulfilled aspirations onto him about what he should be and how he should behave—that some can't reconcile with the fact that he has always had pervy and simp-ish tendencies, even if mostly in gag moments, and won't always be the stoic, cool, and serious guy. It is a part of him, and I don't feel the need for him to ditch that. For those who truly have an issue, there is a more suave and blander (while still great) version of him somewhere over in the Live Action. Also, let's keep in mind that while still running and evolving, OP was still very much born as a product of the '90s and was influenced by shonen works from the '80s and '90s, especially for its comedy. Sanji is an honestly tame and noble character compared to some from works like Ranma (Happosai) or, hell, the main character of the excellent City Hunter.

Sapphire

i think a lot of his supposed chivalry comes off as chauvinism personally.

crystal

THIS IS SOOO TRUE LOL!!!

juniorviana

I agree with you, its like oda goes too deep in the bit sometimes, but I disagree with people that say something that happens once in 400 episodes ruins the character

Nazim Belaidi

I think what bothered her the most is that he said it's his dream, that made it more than just a gag

Tabo51

There is mild censorship at the end of Usopp's fight with Perona. When Perona passes out in shock, she is actually heavily foaming at the mouth in the manga. A detail they decided to omit in the anime. I like to think that Usopp also has some chivalry as we've seen him go in for the overkill against Chu in Arlong Park where he beat an enemy while he's down but didn't do anything to physically harm Perona after making her pass out. I think it's so fitting for Zoro to choose to use a technique called "Hiryu" (flying dragon) against zombie Ryuma who, phonetically, also has the word "dragon" in his name.

Mikki_Frost

I have to disagree that the whole pervy spying wishes don't fit his character.. He's always been a perv, don't forget how excited he was to get started on a strip search of Kalifa. Just because we like Sanji, doesn't mean we should just forget or ignore how big of a pervert he is.

Mikki_Frost

Heck, even all the way back in Alabasta, he was in charge of buying outfits and got revealing dancer girl outfits for Nami and Vivi, while getting proper desert-crossing fits for the guys.. He is a perv through and through.

Matthew Heffner

The unfortunate thing with Sanji is that he is definitely a pervert and that is within his character. I don’t think we are meant to take his pervertedness that seriously, like you said it comes off as the bit going too far. It’s supposed to be just jokes, but I feel One Piece does this time to time. Example, in Water 7 Kalifa’s whole “sexual harassment” bit she keeps doing. Now maybe chat can steer me right if I have this wrong, but my understanding of the punchline is that she calls things that aren’t harassment, harassment. That the joke is women are quick to do this and “oh isn’t that funny how girls do that”. Wildly messed up. Sometimes the humor or the culture around that humor doesn’t exactly translate in the west for us. Such is the case with Sanji and other things in the future I won’t spoil.

Kanly

Living with those to be continued having to wait for a week for the next chapter was a special type of masochism

Alexander Rosario

I think your thoughts on Sanji are really healthy. I think the bit is a sort of cultural thing that doesn't translate as well in the present time and Western culture that is far more puritanical than Eastern cultures like Japan. I also think that it's sort of hypocritical to completely hate a character who is otherwise a terrific person because of a dumb flaw that ultimately doesn't really directly harm anyone and is really only utilized as a gag. As people, we all have flaws, and I just think Sanji specifically has such powerfully good qualities as a person that more than make up for the perverted parts of his nature. But yeah, to each their own. There's just going to be people who find that as a line that holds more value to them than all the good he does. I personally don't put that much weight on sexual things, but that may be because I did not originally grow up in the US, and sexual things in my mother culture, while still generally respected as a sacred thing within a marriage, is not spoken about with the same derision and intolerance that you'll typically see in a place like the US. Though I will note that despite that, I find the way Americans treat sexuality to be generally far more unhinged, despite all their talk. It's kind of like that repressed religious sexuality stereotype where it all comes out behind closed doors has become the status quo for Americans, haha.

Alexander Rosario

hmmm. Couldn't she watch the one off short story of Ryuma at this point? It technically precedes One Piece as one of Oda's earlier works, though it's animated quite a bit after this. That being said, it doesn't have any spoilers in it after this point.

Naishiuan

Thank you for defending my favorite character Sanji, i feel so much better now, he didn't deserve this amount of hate.

Eliezer Rivera

32.00 this music is the theme of shanks

Rudi

It was at that moment that I felt genuine pity for Perona.

jinsinca

usopp be yelling out his name like his giant inspirations' laugh

Roben Sifer

People can have more than one dream at a time. The being invisible part is what I got from Sanji saying dream. Not including the perving. His love for women was just bleeping through messing him up. He was clearly trying to keep himself composed that whole time. The Devil Fruit is what mattered. But he is 19 so.

Mitchel

smh jfc. If youre caught up on One Piece you should know where it comes from.

Go Raon

Don't you think its cool that we get to see all Brook's fighting moves by the zombie but Brook himself?goat writing. Will you watch Ryuma's OVA?

Frozen

yes, just look over it.

Keylara

In case it was not quite clear, Oars' obsession with having a pirate hat isn't just a funny bit but a reflection on how important his straw hat is to him.

madzhatter12

Mvp of the arc ussop for this episode. I'd give zorro 2nd place.

ilúvatar

there is 2020's anime for sure, and maybe manga behavior of sanji consistent with the perv dream he is talking here, I will not mention it to not spoil, but if you are current you know, and if you arent just trust me. you can say cultural but the "problem" has persisted into modern times, so calling it a product of the times is just not true.

ilúvatar

you talk about people forgetting his good qualities after a bad action, but sanji is fairly popular, if anything people tend to "forget" his bad parts, really just choose to ignore them. if sanji had murdered an innocent kid, almost no one would like him, so there are things bad enough that would erase the good parts, after that it's just a matter of how bad do you think his bad parts are. As a guy I dont know if im fully equipped to determine how bad it is, and I never had to worry too much about it because i've been a zoro ride or die since the Mihawk duel in East Blue. Also, i think Zoro's brand of respect for women is just plain better, he considers equal and treats them as such

ilúvatar

if he killed an innocent person every 400 episodes i would hope you had a problem with that, so it's not just a matter of how rare it is, it's a question of how bad you think his behavior is. or maybe a function of how bad it is and how often he does it

Nerd King Productions

The issue i think is its out of place, its the ONLY time Oda is ever so disrespectful with such a topic

Irvin Mugo

I mean you also gotta consider that at the time, this topic wasn't as sensitive as it is now. Nowadays, cancel culture rules everything, but back then, it wasn't just animanga, but every industry made jokes about this and talked about this. I had to skip so many scenes in Smallville (a live action show about Superman) because I didn't want my little brother to see all the objectification and Superman oogling women.

Jay

I mean that's the gag in itself, it's the same with him talking about the mermaids. That's the joke guys.

Irvin Mugo

That's what I'm saying.

ゆきYUKI

I think 70% of *One Piece* is comedy, so I just laughed my way through that scene with Sanji, but I can see how some people might feel that parts—like him talking about his dreams—are a bit over the top. But I always keep in mind that everything Oda-sensei writes is true to the character’s essence, so I think Sanji is a total womanizer (just barely staying within the law). Haha 😅😂 Characters, just like people, have many different sides, right? Sanji’s cool side is just so cool that no one can resist him. 😍

BTImelesS

It's not normal in Japan, it might be common in anime but it's not "normal". It's normalized but harassment is never normal. It used to be normalized in a lot of western media as well. By the way, mixed baths in Japan were closed because of harassment like that and a lot of Japanese people who were actually normal and not accepting of this kind of harassment and wanted to keep mixed baths open. It is a very interesting cultural thing to look into and see how different sides treated it. Of course there were a lot who blamed "man's nature" or women, because there always conservative freaks like that, but the normalization of this kind of harassment culture took a part in it.

BTImelesS

You can't love women and want to harass them.

BTImelesS

Also I'm sorry but isn't boiling down Sanji's weakness to "perviness" doing a bit of a disservice to Sanji's character? Sanji's flaw is that he keeps trying to sacrifice himself, that he doesn't believe he's worth it, not that he's a perv, that's his gag. Zoro's flaw is not that he gets lost, that's his gag again, it's that he doesn't know how to lean onto others. Luffy's flaw is not that he likes meat, that's his gag, it's that he charges forward without a plan all the time without thinking of the consequences. Etc... Like is Sanji's character growth going to be that he will start respecting women? I doubt it, just like Zoro's is not going to be that he will be able to find his way. It's a very sexist gag, it is indeed a trope in a lot of manga anime, it's not something new, or Oda specific but it still is disgusting. And all these people who say that it's a "cultural" thing sure, just like it used to be in western "culture" that it was ok, there are thousand of movies that normalize this behavior in western movies as well. But that doesn't mean that there is no feminist movement in Japan that rejects this harassment culture. If you want a manga example, Witch Hat Atelier's mangaka ( a woman btw) handles this exact same situation (perving on women without their consent) way better. The anime is not there yet but the manga is and if someone is really interested in seeing this discussion taking place from a non male gaze in the form they are used to (manga) they should ready WHA.

BTImelesS

"Cancel culture rules everything". Really? Where? Where you have the Epstein class in power? Are we being serious? You guys live in your own reality I swear. Saying that maybe you shouldn't normalize harassment is cancel culture?

Irvin Mugo

No one is normalizng anything. I'm just saying, maybe don't take a fictional character so seriously. I mean bringing up Epstein!? Are you serious? It's a fictional story, no matter how political it can be

Silvanus2004

Okay, i think it makes it more clear when I rephrase it. It was /is (partly) accepted as long as it stayed a fantasy in manga/anime, literature and is displayed in an over the top way ( Like Sanji, Jiraya etc where the reactions are exaggerated). The problem is when fantasy does not stay fantasy, and this has , rightfully so, been detested more an more in the last years in Japan. This, of course impacted alse the different media in the last years. As the "peeing tom" trope has slowly faded out or disappeared completely of the more recent creations.

Ilsuk Yang

Perona got more than she bargained for when she bought that ticket to Usopp theater lol

Something7274

Time for my obligatory recommendation of Monsters: 103 Mercies; an adaptation of this samurai Ryumas one-shot written by Oda before he wrote One Piece. I cant remember if you have reacted to it yet.

jinsinca

my headcannon is that swordfighters in one piece are extremely prideful of their craft and so ryuma had a toji-esque moment here, losing as a swordsman trumps the zombie effect and he lost thus ending the zombie. also watching this back and hearing brook talking about the two of them as swordsman is kinda cool IYKYK

Alexander Rosario

Yes, but it's severely watered down compared to this. I never meant that the theme doesn't exist, simply that it's faded.

Zero

Sanji is such an interesting character, and in many ways I see Moria's crew as clear inversions or mirrors of our crew. Absalom and Sanji are both massive pervs, but I'd say a big difference is that Sanji actually loves women, whereas Absalom just desires them and doesn't care for them at all. Sanji will swoon and be pervy but he would never do the things Absalom did, because he actually cares about women. (He also clearly cares about the guys as well, he's just a big tsun tsun about it.) Also one thing I always saw in Sanji is that he seems to feel things to the extreme. I mean his rage in this arc caused him to literally catch on fire and explode. But that includes his feelings of attraction towards women. Similarly to how Usopp manages to function while living life with a seemingly constant anxiety attack, Sanji is walking around in a state of constant hornyness. Like imagine yourself a your most anxious and depressed, that is a tuesday for Usopp. And imagine yourself when you were the most turned on and "ready to go" in your life, and that's a tuesday for Sanji. I feel similarly to Sanji, it's emotions, I cannot control them, but I can control how I respond to them. Sanji wears his feelings on his sleeve, he's open and honest about pretty much everything he feels, much like the rest of the Strawhats. In real life things are different, so you gotta keep most of your emotions to yourself, and find places, times, and ways to let them out in ways that don't harm you or others. I think the big issue here is people seem to equate Sanji's perversions and Absaloms perversions. Let me be clear, peeping on others in the bath is just not something you do. But let me also be clear, what Absalom did was orders of magnitude worse than peeping on someone in the bath. When I was younger I also wanted to peep in the girls locker room, heck if I got the Clear-Clear fruit the thought would likely cross my mind even now. But it's similarly to the desire to punch an annoying person in the face. You feel a desire to do it, but you also know better than to actually do it. I get that the joke doesn't land for some people, and I get that for some people it's genuinely disturbing, I used to feel similar with some of the slapstick in both this show and others. But in the end, it really is played for laughs, and it's not really that serious.

Mannygogou

oh?, so people have "issues"... Too bad. Oh well, we all have issues. Sanji said exactly that it was his boyhood dream to become an invisible man. It was clearly a joke in the writing but it was his dream as a boy. So people hate the boy Sanji oh well that's unfortunate. Sanji was reaching out to his boyhood and pulled out that one dream but then in the course of the fight he said he got over it. But people still have "their own issues" well that's just the way it is. It's also bad to put people on a pedestal. That is also an issue. There are probably a hundred issues that float by through all these episode and "people" will gravitate on issues that they resonate with the most. We are all incomplete human beings but it's also true that some issues are obvious when they're hit with a bullseye and people can't help their own feelings when they're laid bare and they can't help their reaction. I appreciate Flexi's point on this, she has the right attitude. It's up to everyone else to sort out their own feelings and in time maybe grow up like Sanji has.

Mannygogou

lol let's ask this question, did Sanji peep? No. When Nami lost her shirt it was Sanji who gave her his jacket in Little Garden. Sanji can say anything he wants... but his actions say different. He apologized to unconscious Nami by pushing her away onto the ground because he was concerned that he might get his blood on her nice white dress. She is unconscious, she does not hear anything of this. Sanji did not do that to get on her good side for it. Sanji says things in public in front of people but his actions he does them on his own without prompting. He has his code and his guiding star. When he's fighting other men he does chivalrous things to set an example for other men. He told Absalom to "remove those canons." It's a dirty way of fighting and he wouldn't have it. When he fought Mister Two, Bon Clay, he fought him fairly. As Bon Clay lay defeated he asked to be killed, but Sanji just said "It was a good fight, that is enough" and extended his hand showing compassion and camaraderie. This brought tears to Bon Clay's eyes. In the Baratie restaurant arc, Sanji was beaten badly with an iron club by Gin who in the end refused to kill him because Sanji had shown compassion earlier and Sanji never asked for quarter when he was taking heavy blows for owner Zeff. In the end Sanji forgave Gin and even gave him a boat, it was also camaraderie among men. Gin became a better man because of Sanji... So yes some viewers will "ignore" these good things about Sanji and they will focus on something they can be toxic about. They are missing out on Sanji the man.., the hero, the chivalrous knight. Among men Sanji will say things. Such as when alone with Chopper he said about Robin, "Remember this, when a woman lies... A real man forgives her." So yea. Go ahead and hate on Sanji. But Chopper believes.

Mannygogou

I think "when the animation changes" it's because they've handed over the animation to a more expensive animation company/animation house. They still need a story to animate ... but it might signal that there's something going to be cool in the episode/s.

Ace The FireDragon

You also have to realize, anime at the time those pervy jokes were written were in a culture where anime was known for being kinda like "ecchi" and super over the top on "The pervy character tropes". Think Jiraya for example. It obviously doesnt work now for modern audiences now that anime is more mainstream. But at the time, the "nose bleeding" for seeing a naked women or men peeping on women. Those kinds of jokes were seen as normal. Remember, anime was still a niche thing back then. People called anime fans "weebs". But when anime became mainstream (Like it is now) those kinds of jokes faded out of popularity.

Javie casicas

HATERS BE HATIN' SMH. We love Sanji Heavy!! Still one of my fav SH till this day 🐐♥️. Just placed 3rd in One Piece World Popularity. A GOAT JUST LIKE YOU FLEXIE.

Daniel Telenev

Sanji is goated, I feel like I fully understand him after the Wano arc, he will always be my number 1

Soulreaver Dread

The whole Sanji drama situation, completely unnecessary and stupid. Never needed to happen enjoy the rest of the show.

TheRollingWrath888

Flexie, you perfectly verbalized my love for Sanji, and my reaction to people’s criticism of his character. Do I agree that his horniness could be dialed down? Absolutely. However, I never saw it as a dealbreaker for my love for his character.
