up til now I've been painting mostly doodles and isolated scenes vcvfg (my cat stepped on the keyboard and typed that, how fitting), so I wanted to push myself to paint something that felt more finished and recognizable as pieces of art. I'd mostly been wading in the shallow end, because...I was scared! classic. I chose a subject very familiar to me, my cat, and painted her going about her usual activities (messing around with stuff on my desk).

I painted the base layer with gouache on cold press watercolor paper then layered over it with oil pastels and color pencils. the paper is super textured and I really love the look it produces. it has this warm, fuzzy quality that reminds me of picture books I read as a kid. super sweet and comforting. I used the same technique for the other page of doodles and am deeply charmed by how those turned out as well.

painting more complete scenes is really fun! doing them in approachable chunks gives me more confidence to gradually do larger pieces. excited to see where this path leads!
