And here we are formally introduced to Tamamo Cross! Simply put, Tamamo is the Larry Bird to Oguri’s Magic Johnson (considering it’s also 1988).

The fakeout in this episode is so good, but if you paid attention to the race you'd notice that Oguri is the only racer not in their fancy racing uniforms. She's just wearing her normal clothes, which wouldn't make any sense in such a prestigious race as the Japanese Derby. She is also never actually shown beside any of the other girls actually participating in the Derby. Like you all noticed too, she is never once shown actually in the crowd of racers and literally only appears near any of them right at the end, which is basically everyone imagining how Oguri would have performed if she had been let in. They were chasing a phantom of her. Also, this rule change from Oguri is actually pretty important for other characters. Specifically T.M. Opera O, the "Conqueror of the Century's End", one of the greatest Japanese racing horses to ever live. She shows up in the Race to the Top and Beginning of a New Era movies (both unbelievably hype), but the ONLY reason she got to race in the Derby is because of the rule change made for Oguri. So Oguri is basically the one that opened the path for one of, if not THE greatest racing horse in Japanese history to race there. In fact, when they have Rudolph say "I hope our dreams become a reality" after they decide to change the rules they show T.M. Opera O, because part of her legacy comes from this very decision to change the rules after Oguri.

This is one of my favorite episodes in CG cos of how excellent the fake out was 🤣 gonna add more non spoil context 1. As stated by the chairman in the anime, they promised to amend the rules. In the year 1992, the "Oguri Cap System" was placed allowing late registrants to participate in the classics by paying a late fee. This rule is still alive till this day. 2. An easter egg is placed in this episode of a character wearing a cape and a crown on her head. As stated in another comment, that is TM Opera O. The first horse under the Oguri Cap System to dominate her era. 3. Another character mentioned that she was also barred from the derby cos of the rules. That horse was Maruzensky aka the Super Car. An undefeated race horse who was not allowed to participate in the classics as she was of foreign descent.

This race was one of the best fake outs I have ever seen done. The way they spliced both races to make it seem like one was amazing! It really fooled us all till the very end! Its only because people new to the series don't realize that you have to be an established racer to not have to wear the school racing uniform anymore and you get your own personal styled outfit to race in. That is the give away for those that watch the original series.😉
