Hello Patrons. Having a nice time visiting my son, who is stationed in Korea. My biggest fear with traveling is some huge TTRPG news breaks while I am away and I can't make content. about it. And that is what's happening now. Since I cannot make a video, I have included a link to my friend Luke at DM's Lair, who does a great job explaining the issue. Props also to Limithron, author of Pirate Borg, for leading this charge.

Cliffnotes Version: Patreon is switching to a subscription-based model because Apple is bullying them with high fees. The fees are particularly high on the Patreon APP. If you want to stick it to Patreon, do NOT cancel your subscription. Instead, delete the APP and access content through your computer. This will force Patreon to stand up to APPL and reconsider these changes. I endorse this plan and encourage you to contact Patreon here and make your dissatisfaction know. PLEASE be cordial and professional: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Some people will ask if I am going to migrate my content to another platform. There are no plans to do so at this time. It's complex and I'll explain my reasoning in an upcoming video. But that's going to have to wait a couple of weeks until I get back. It will be LOOONG--probably the topic of September's front porch lecture.

Until then, thanks for your continued support. I could not make DungeonCraft without your support.

May all your rolls be 20s.

Look out for the train to Busan, I heard it’s a doozy. Bummer about Patreon, I plan on following your advice.

Lee Dunning

Fortunately, I already do all my viewing through the computer. I've never been a fan of Apple. Their propensity for proprietary tech you can't upgrade but need to replace, has always bugged me. This new level of greed further solidifies my disdain for their company.

Stefan

Done. I didn’t even realize I had the app installed, I never used it.

SpeakingBeast

I already view this content on my computer. However, I will contact support and let them know my thoughts.

smallfish

Hey PDM, are you traveling anywhere else in Asia?

Eric Mason

Apple earned my ire decades ago when some of my profs wanted their programming assignments done on those pieces of crap. It was like trying to build a ship in a bottle while wearing a straight jacket. Screw them and whatever conveyance they arrived in.

Scott Spears

Well that sucks. I don't think I used the app, so deleting it was no big deal. Enjoy your trip and worry about this later.

Brian Peters

Thanks for letting us know about this! i have been spreading the word

Anyone who wants to list Spotify as a good example is not going to win me over. Spotify has historically(as in almost since the beginning) NEVER PAYS THE MUSICIAN! That’s why Spotify isnt going to stand up to anyone. This will work itself out, and most likely creators will need to raise their fees every month. That’s where this is headed.

Chad Wilkerson

App: deleted. It’s a bummer that Apple is still pulling this stuff after decades. “Old habits” as they say…

MrGunn

Welcome to the New Guilded Age folks. Vast gap between haves and have nots, check; vertically integrated corporations maintaining a monopoly on various sectors of the economy, check; out of control oligarchs with out sized ability to manipulate government policies to their benefit, check; wild boom bust economic cycles disrupting the lives of working families then requiring those same tax payers to bail out corporations whose greed caused the economy to crash in the first place; check. Everywhere I look another one of these platforms, YouTube, Patreon, etc are putting the screws to the very people who make said platform possible. A collective of creatives needs to be formed who will create an alternative not for profit platform. Without control of the means of production, creatives will never have leverage or a say in the process.

MrGunn, we at the Ministry of Truth must give you a strike on this account for spreading this comment as it has been deemed misinformation or disinformation or just as anything else we don’t agree with we simply don't want you pointing out this so-called hard truth to the masses. They might wake up...oops too close to woke huh? Still, remember we are all inclusive, unless you disagree with our narrative or ideology then you will be called names like Yahtzee or stuff like that. All kidding aside, you hit a home run here I agree with your sentiments 100%. I did my best to avoid making my own in-depth post as this is just as much political as it is a business and legal matter. Due to political commentary seemingly being frowned upon on this site I retracted any ambition for such comments or at least I’m trying not to. Never-the-less, politics is involved in this matter and also why you can't expect elected officials on either side nor anyone in the justice system to do anything about this debacle. I did warn a few content creators a few years back about putting all the eggs in one basket. Now it’s just one giant ish sandwich and guess who’s gotta take a bite. Yep, all our favorite people. I have a hard time understanding how anyone can post a video like this and expect those of us who are upset with the situation to silence ourselves from pulling back the curtain as to what and why some news outlets have exposed being the reasoning behind this is. It’s not like YouTube doesn’t have a track record of silencing independent voices whether it be Dungeon Tubers, political analysts, or independent journalists. Also, let’s not forget this is an election year. No coincidence or surprise here if for those paying any attention. Wasn’t it nice when we could get content that covered game mechanics, player and DM advice, or crafting? If this is what this channel has to offer going forward, I’ll be tuning out and I’ve been a solid supporter since the beginning. This is no longer about the hobby we all know and love and I’m just getting tired of all this crap. The news is depressing enough and coupled with inflation it’s only getting worse. Remember, entertainment was meant to be a form of escapism from all this, now it seems you can’t get a break. Normally, I would enjoy videos from Dungeon Tubers as entertaining and informative. Yet, I’m quite capable of doing most of what they do for my own players on my own and have tons of source material and new innovative ideas inspired by various sources. So, if these channels go bye-bye so be it. Those who could have done something should have been proactive rather than reactive. A side note, Wolverine and Deadpool has made box office history as the number one R rated move grossing over a billion bucks. Sure, it’s got foul language and a bit over the top but at least it’s not pushing “The Message” or any other ideological crap. I’m going to check it out as a form of escapism from all this. Enough is enough if you know what I mean. I get my news from various sources but don’t want to list them all. So, ONLY for those interested, here is one of them that covers the Google stuff in about 12 minutes. The last half of the video discusses how this may have a direct impact on all YouTube Creators. Timcast - DOJ Moves To BREAK UP GOOGLE, Google Ruled ILLEGAL MONOPOLY, This Will ROCK Political Landscape- Source is New York Times https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPnxIe7uMvU Stay safe and happy gaming everyone.

I have no sympathy for Patreon, which has been a garbage company with extremely unethical business practices for a long time. I wish there was an alternative way to support you PDM without giving money to these people.

Jeff Krus

Should I delete the app on a Droid phone?

Firstspear

Move to substack or another platform.

Jim Van Cura

I chose not to use phone apps a long time ago. Apps have access to your phone, your contacts, photos, they know what you look like, they call home to the mother ship with your data, they can feed you ads that browsers block, Apple and Google control them, most have a terrible user experience and overall, they're a privacy nightmare to name just a few negatives. For the most part, I use the Brave browser (no, I don't work for them) to access most things. It's secure, blocks ads, and will take you to the places you need to go. Just say no to (most) phone apps.

Jay

Yep. I use Brave and no phone apps. I use my phone for text, calls, and e-mail (only when necessary). I'm checking out the reviews on the UP Phone at the moment. Allegedly it is fully encrypted and protected outside of the Control of Google and Apple. Also, has a kill switch to disconnect the battery like unlike other phones. Faraday bags are good in some cases as well. Anyway, I'm tired of all the spam and spying. I don't work for Brave or UP Phone either but though some might be interested in checking them out too. Short answer long...NO PHONE APPS. Anyone who offers you a deal for using an app is getting something out of it an you are likely the product they are selling.

Wouldn't it be great if our favorite Dungeon Tubers collaborated to create content on a single website they owned and controlled. I would pay up front an annual subscription for that. Then we would only get the content we subscribed for and not have to hear about WoTC, Patreon, or YouTube does due to some algorithm or policy changes affecting their income.

Megatron

Can't stand Apple. Already only use Patreon on my computer. Ahead of the curve!!!

Graham Kane

I mainly only view PDM’s Patreon content on my laptop. Deleted the app after seeing this video.

jnlsn family

I already do that, insert "I'm doing my part!" meme from Starship Troopers here.

I gotta find it, but some creators started their own site that was like YouTube or Patreon, and was run by creators. Dang. It seems really relevant now, I’d follow Dan over there if the site was as supportive to creators as they claimed.

Mortan L-J

Just a heads up: Dennis Detwiller is using ghost.io, and it looks like it could be a really good thing to use instead of Patreon. Here’s a link to his site so you can decide if ghost.io is something for you: https://delta-green.ghost.io Btw, sorry if it’s against the rules to link to other creators on your Patreeon Professor, but I thought you might be interested :)

This is exactly what GunTubers have done because of the constantly moving goalposts on censorship and endorsements regarding firearms. I don't recall the name as I don't subscribe, but this type of approach is going to have to become more common as the YouTube monopoly just becomes more monstrous. :/

Lance

App deleted. Hope Patreon makes the right decision for creators.
