PDM reviews the Quickstart rules of Critical Role's Candela Obscura and compares the mechanics to DM Scotty's EzD6. He also touches on Blades in the Dark, Powered by the Apocalypse and Dungeon World and "success but..." mechanics. Plus Deathbringer sings! This video has something for everyone!

Excited to watch PDM, keep up the great work!

Ron F.

Bravo!

Paul Popernack

Rock on Deathbringer, rock on. PDM, please release the full Deathbringer video, as long as he consents

SJBehindtheScreen

As great as the outro/bonus was, it reached a new level with the background vocals during the 'Mmm-mmm-mmm" parts. Outstanding.

Weird Cat

I'm not really a fan of "success at a cost" mechanics, personally, but I do hope that Candela Obscura does well.

steven bray

Love the song, great video!

Ernesto

The screaming chorus 😂😂

Richie Walker

Hahah fantastic death bringer song. I was a bit confused at the start though as I thought the CR campaign was called “candela obscura” and the system was “illuminated worlds”. So “illuminated worlds” is just the name of the dice pool mechanic?

Scott

The review is good, the song is great!

Graymaulken

Um, I wouldn’t say this to Deathbringer’s face, but don’t quit your day job…

MrGunn

EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!!! :D

Brian Leet

Further evidence that there are neither multi-classing, nor a bard class, in Deathbringer. Good review, and I agree with your critique of 'success with consequences', although I do like to play with levels of success, which can be similar. I do think this sort of mechanism is great for players to try, particularly if their input is solicited, as it can help bridge the gap between player and DM. And we know role playing always needs more DMs.

Wow I haven't heard Crash Test Dummies in years.

Steven

Great Song! That was worth my 10 bucks. WOTC must hate you. Keep Rocking the Boat PDM.

A Name Apart

I hope you release the full song on YouTube. They deserve to be made fun of

Masterhit

Hilarious. Need the album "Deathbringer Sings" now

Greatest outro ever!

Elvis Ramone

In all honesty the last D&D books I bought were for 3.5 until December last year, someone had a fire sale on the 5E PHB for $15 and I got it so I could wrap my head around what people were talking about with some of the rule concepts. Almost vomited seeing wizards with d6 for hp. Seriously tho, it seems when any edition is going to be retired the book quality drops like a stone. The original Unearthed Arcana fell apart real fast as did Oriental Adventures. Skipped a lot of 2E as I was busy with World of Darkness and Champions at the time. Hit 3/3.5 hard and when the 3.5 Unearthed Arcana book came out it was falling apart almost the first day. So did the 5E books start falling apart early or late in the life of 5E? Or was it hit ans miss? I have heard some complaints, but not universal.

MrGunn

@Elvis Ramone I am not sure what you intended with your comment, I am trying to assume positive intent, but it comes across as menacing.

Morten Steindal

That outro! Great work (as always), Professor!

Lee Caddick

Nice work PDM! Deathbringer has had a couple of hits now, like others I'm looking forward to the album!

virtuadept

EZd6 sounds pretty rad.

Chuck Thorin

Great vid and you really need to release the full version of the song on Youtube as its own video. But as I said the other day on the announcement of this video, I'd say it's a return to d6's. Most notably for old school games there's Tunnel and Trolls and West End Games' original Star Wars. And for newer games, I just grabbed up Cowpunchers which is Wild West role playing. :)

Thierry Lussagnet

Funny, i also go from d20 to d6 for my homebrew a few month ago. For me the idea came from a cameback to Bloodbowl this automn and the will to go for a more "boardgame" feel to my table. I agrea about EzD6 it's streamline and quick rule. The best light crunch rule i read for a long time.

Glumer Games LLC

You didn’t mention anything about the death mechanics you asked us all about

Sean Grimm

Deathbringer, the Musical Number is NOT the way I expected to start my Monday... Gonna be humming this all day now, THANKS FOR THE EARWORM PDM!!!! ;-)

Frederic Schmitt

Thanks a lot! Especially for the singing 😅

Glumer Games LLC

My apologies. I must have missed that. I’ll watch it again if for no other reason than to crank the song on 10

ViggenCA

Pretty sure that was Superman's Song, now for Deathbringer?

Peter Ferguson

Ok, I totally loved Deathbringer's song! Well played PDM!

Seth Bunton

The extended version of this song deserves to be on vinyl. I would back that kickstarter…

The Byronic Ted

Now he is even singing!! 😎 Fantastic! 😂

Graham Kane

Only getting to see this now, but damn that song made me laugh! Those screams….😂

Kage Holman

I love the Crash Test Dummies parody. F’ing EPIC!

MrGunn

For those of you who did not get the reference, Emotional Damage!, is a quote from the comedian, Steven He, he made in a video about 'Asian Mode' difficulty level in video games. The quote, has since become an internet meme, usable in many circumstance. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWZnenTQDB4 for the video.

Broton

I assume that's new words to an existing song...?
