D&D's Final Edition

Comments

Andrew

Obviously this is not the final edition. When they feel like the online edition is dated oh in say six months after it's release, they'll start to work on a new edition. When they release their VTT, D&D will be entering a whole new world, where new graphics will be the main driver of what D&D will be morphing into, especially if the online edition is a hit. So I expect new rules to be in the works anytime the graphics guys come up with something cool looking into the VTT. In my humble estimation this is far from the final edition.

I agree 100% about D&D being a language. I've always looked at it like Pizza. Almost all Pizza is delicious. Some people prefer Pizza Hut, some prefer Bearnos, some like Chicago-Style, others like NY-style. So pick your favorite flavor/ brand, and enjoy your slice of D&D.

Whatever fantasy style roleplaying game I'm playing is DnD. Rules are manipulable and every game can be improved with some home rules that fit the DM and the players. Let's have some fun. Hoping to play some Shadowdark soon.

Sadly I agree that D&D has become a soulless commodity for Hasbro. It’s been packaged, sterilized for an online generic community. Pity because I have fond memories of my youth playing during the hot summer days at my friend’s patio or on weekends. I guess nothing gold can stay. I’m glad you have decided to focus on independents. The heart and soul of tabletop resides with them.

And some people prefer pizza that is not made by a multinational corporation hell-bent on extracting every ounce of profit from each slice... Rather, that small independent pizzeria that's been run by mom and pop for 20 years, that actually uses wholesome ingredients and cares about its customers is the one I'll choose to support....

I was delighted to hear Bob say that all games are pretty much D&D. PDM said the EXCACT same thing 4 years ago in his video on his house rules. It was true then and it's true now.

Good video as always Professor. Sorry to hear that about the performance of your last video.

Oh, yes, I can opine! I agree with your take and it is a sensible direction for corporate DnD to take, but it is arrogant AF. The FINAL edition? Ridiculous! All of these editons have added something to the game as time progresses: 3.5 introduced the d20 standard, skills and such, 4.0(I’m sure added things to the game, I’m just not familiar with it.), 5.0 added advantage/disadvantage and leaned the bloat down. the prior editions are the shoulders of the giants that THE DND stands upon. If they leave it’s where it will just stagnate. The game can be tweaked and refined to be made better. My dream would be a modular rules cyclopedia: You ante to play DnD rules -lite , here the offfical tweaked rules set, You want grimdark? Use these rules. You want a maximalist game full of crunch and options, use these rules. I think at the very least, they should keep some sort of creative lab open to keep trying to refine and push the rules of DnD forward, even if it’s mainly for use in a digital way. Saying DnD is as good as it gets now, is short sighted at best and not honoring all the folks who have poured their creativity into it over the years, at worst.

I agree that the core of D&D will not change much moving forward. Will gladly share your Independent TTRPG Month video with my friends and the followers I have.

I believe that as more folks say it everyone will start to believe that D&D is a community and a culture of folks enjoying a shared experience. I have found it strange when I first received a harshly abusive response when I said I once played a D&D campaign using Mage rules (it made 3.5 easier when I returned to the game later), or the aggressive, "We don't play D&D, only Pathfinder here (which 3.5 made easier to learn). I also appreciate the clarification made many videos past between a "simulation" and, well I forget the term used, but the difference between "too crunchy" and so unpredictable to be unenjoyable. To be fair, I have literally seen the blind lead the blind, over a small walking bridge with no railing. Damn near wrecked my vehicle to pullover so we could watch. So when I think about a player's choice and say, "Maybe so," I too am looking forward to result of their action. I think it would be interesting for a poll (especially embraced by WoTC for a wider population beyond Youtube and Reddit) to ask who is playing strictly by the published rules. Any version and any "official" supplements. And graduate the responses from strict rule adherence to GM very flexible; from strictly by the rules to mostly house rules (homebrew) with options of 1-5 house rules, 6-10 house rules. Through win how house rules are created an retired (GM decree to a democratic vote). Such a poll would certainly shape the direction of the license-holder (WoTC - or the next) in terms of their strategies for product selection, release timelines, and IP. Maybe it their product release planning becomes quarterly "rules modules" releases that are plug-n-play with the rules, or remove-n-replace, to keep revenue more predictable and the evolution so much more dynamic as is needed to compete with the AI deluge on the horizon.

Congrats to your son. Kind of a big deal, lol. I will share the video on Twitter. Let's see if I can get people to share and watch. Take care sir.

Great video! I have a couple thoughts on the point about 12 devs vs 300 for digital. Firstly, I would expect that programming stuff for a digital platform like a VTT would require a lot more people than for a TTRPG set. I think that’s just kinda the nature of things. Digital development is mentally expensive and time consuming so I don’t think that 5e being stable is the main reason for the disparity by a long shot. How many people worked on the 4e overhaul? Guessing it wasn’t anywhere near 300. Secondly, I wonder how many less devs it would require to program said VTT if the 5e rules were less crunchy.

I remember working in a dot com in the earliest dys of web 2.0 and it was all about gaming google's algorthym then to maximise ad revanue. It's good to see nothing has really changed in the decade plus since. It's still trying to out game google, and then google changes the algo, resetting the playing field...

Nygfan

Did I catch a My Fair Lady reference dropped in this video? If so my respect sir!

First off congratulations on your son's graduation, a wonderful milestone to celebrate. PDM, as always I appreciate your thoughts and insights and your video is interesting. However, I think the heat in your attic is causing you to become confused. You just released a video exhorting everyone to talk about something other than D&D for a month, just afterwards you release video talking about D&D. Time to come downstairs and hydrate before you say anymore about D&D.

I don't think anyone plays "rules as written." Either they misunderstand the rules like I did when I was 11 or invent their own house rules. Just MO

I can tolerate a lot of things, but dissing Chips Ahoy cookies!!! I think we’ve crossed the Rubicon here. 😉 Great insight into the life cycle of the game. Congratulations on your son’s graduation.

Prof - I’m pretty sure the D&D movie didn’t even acknowledge WotC, just Hasbro.
