Odds are very good that you’ve never read this story before, but you FOR SURE know the author. Roald Dahl is responsible for not only penning The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and countless others, but (and I didn’t know this until recently) he was also a spy for the allies in WWII. It’s true, I promise.

Now, I’ve loved his work for years and years and years, and when I was researching spooky tales for narrations, this one popped up and I said to myself, “Self, you gotta read this”. Myself is usually correct so I listened to me and got to reading. What you’re hearing in the recording above is my very first time reading this story through, so if you’re hearing it for the first time, too, you’re in very good company.

As always, thank you so very much for everything and I hope you enjoy, “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl.

Sleep well…

Thank you!!! I can’t wait to listen!

"I said to myself, 'self...'" I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does this 😆 Looking forward to listening shortly, thank you! 💗

Tara Congo

I haven't listened yet, but I do in fact know this one! Excited to hear it in your voice. Very excellent choice of creepy literature 😁

Chloe

Thank you Geoff!!! This is perfect time❤️

Els Peeters (=jopperke)

Right on time! Just poured myself a glass of whiskey and was looking for something to enjoy it with. The 🔥 is burning, the candles are lit and this is the icing on the cake: just perfect! 💖

Rachael Heidi

Oh I'm heading to bed now so this is going to be perfect! Thank you, you spoil us.

Angie Woollard

Oh, excellent - thank you so much! I look forward to hearing this for the first time together with you!

Erin Hensey

I'm doing this as it was supposed to be experienced: In bed with the lights off

Caitlin Binedell

Wow. That was amazing. Very spooky, perfect for the season. He's an incredible author and you did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. 😁

Hunter

Ooh, that sent shivers down my spine. Good thing my tea is cinnamon and not…almond… spooky season is going well. Thanks so much!

Susan Smith

You are way too good at this! Two minutes in and the suspense was already killing me. I wound up scaring my cat with my reactions. She's still all puffed up looking around. Lol

Gretchen G

Oh my goodness, that was creepy. I kept yelling "No, don't drink the tea!" at my phone. 😅 What a wonderful way to be introduced to this story! You have good taste in literature, sir. And such a soothing reading voice.

Jess Teerlink

Thank you! I’m very excited to listen to it😊

Els Peeters (=jopperke)

Just finished and it really was perfect! Thank you! Are you familiar with Anthony Horowitz? He has a very similar style to Roald Dahl, with just a touch more wordplay and absurd humor. Highly recommend!

Alisha Watson

The suspense was killing me on this one. Excellent story choice.

Marlo Schalesky

Thanks so much, Geoff! Perfect for my evening relaxing after a long day at the barn.

Pete Magill

Wow, what s story! And so wonderful when read by you! Thanks so much.

Katie D

Not scary to me, but extremely creepy and suspenseful. I highly enjoyed it! You do creepy so very well, Geoff. Thank you for this! Going to have to listen again 😁

Maggie S

Oh! That was deliciously scary! Thank you, Geoff! And so perfectly narrated. First time hearing this tale.

Debs Badger

That is very well done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank yourself for me for recommending it to you. 🤪 Suitably creepy, but you'll have to try harder to scare me. 😁

Hugmany Foemen

Thank you, Self, for an exellent choice. I recall that Mr. Dahl hosted 'Tales of the Unexpected' on UK tv many thousands of years ago...

Debbie Hudson

Reminded me of Bates Motel for some reason!😁 As soon as you mentioned the dog... I said.....that is stuffed I bet!😳 Very well read Mr Geoff....and I too was shouting...."Don't drink the tea!!!!"🤣

Shauna Tramutolo

You will never realize the number of massive anxiety attacks that your narrations and music have stopped for me. I wish there was something more I could do for you to show my appreciation other than to just say thank you. Thank you so much for your gifts to all of us. We will be forevermore grateful.

Amanda Hovendon

Wow that was creepy and I loved it lol. That totally reminded me of the movie Psycho with the taxidermy and everything!

Lioba

Thank you very much! I had almost forgotten how great Roald Dahl's short stories are! Fantastic how you capture the creepy atmosphere while reading, with that hidden sense of menace. That tingling feeling on the back of your neck that you don't know where it's coming from. I'm really looking forward to the next story! Kiss Kiss

Alex Walker

Not enough to scare me, but creepy, very creepy! 🦇🎃. I can't help but smile when I remember your tone while reading her, lol.

Hugmany Foemen

I just realised, FIRST read through? Fair play, that was VERY impressive (and creepy 😯)

Huldra Draco

awesome, Geoff! but even a spooky story isn't enough to keep me from falling asleep while you read, lol. had to continue the story after i woke up, and almost fell back asleep again! 🤣

Barbara Binney

Not scary, but definitely creepy. Have you ever considered narrating “Wide O" by Elsin Ann Perry? That was the short story that got me hooked on the horror/suspense genre of books way back in elementary school.

Julia Cable

Thank you for sharing. Wow

Sandy Mrotek

This was so, so good and a great Halloween type piece. I look forward to all the books that you do and love them. You also said that you were going to do some closer to Halloween so I will be looking out for those days. Thank you for being one of the best readers of books that I can think of.

Randiskye

What a nice bedtime story. You're right, I've read other of his works, but hadn't ever come across this one. I love when stories leave something up to the reader's imagination, they're the creepiest. I have enjoyed all your narrations so far, and am looking forward to the next ones. Happy Halloween!

Helen A

Oh! I recognized this story a few minutes in. It was dramatized as an 1950-something episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" starring Dean Stockwell as Billy. (My local version of sci-fi channel plays the series.) I never forgot the episode after seeing it, but I had no idea it had been a short story first, and by Roald Dahl of all people! So fun, and so creepy, and a great narration. I love when you read stories with individual characters.

Jacklinka

Roald Dahl is always that creepy and that funny at the same time. Beautiful narration! I really enjoyed it, thank you. It ended abruptly and impressive with your echo. I really appreciate all the special sound effects, they make impression of the real radio play: the door crack and the fire crack, the bell ring, the clink of teaspoon on the porcelain and the pen rustling. And you wonderful voice actor work, of course.

Raevon

Geoff, thank you so much for this. I recognized the story after a few lines and it is very creepy. Wonderful narration! The special sound effects added so much to it. I love how you are able to bring us into the story watching what you are reading.

Tine

Wonderful narration. Billy should've caught on earlier😫 Moral of the story: don't be a cheapskate about accommodation and don't trust old ladies with fast moving pale hands that hold out trays out way too high in front of them and whose pets don't move an inch. The way you intonated on 'perfectly preserved' definitely gave me goosebumps. In a bad way. So horrifying😆 am I wrong for thinking around 10:50 something is off with the echoing 'like you' in the background? Or is that intentional and just me not getting something 🤔 This was perfect to test out my new earbuds. Love all the 'foley' with the crackling fire and all that which adds to the overall product and experience. Thanks Geoff. Look forward to the other ones coming next week! Or well.. listen forward?.. doesn't make much sense does it😶

Debs Badger

These *are* the new ones. He'll be releasing them *publicly* to YouTube starting on Thursday.

Suzy Bailey

I made the mistake of listening to this in bed last night and even a creepy story is not enough to stop me falling asleep at the sound of your deep and soothing voice! 😴 So I'll have to try this again in the daytime!💜

Cynthia Peterson

First time hearing this and while I wasn't scared, it certainly was creepy. Loved your narration. I wish you would do the Prisoner of Chillon by Lord Byron. It's my favorite poem and I believe you could really do it justice.

Hugmany Foemen

OK, so I listened to this during my break at work just around dawn (very early shift). I was outdoors and, as I listened, the overcast sky turned blood red and bruised-looking as the sun rose behind the clouds, and an unkindness of ravens flew overhead, calling... ...that was the most atmospheric story-telling ever!

Suzy Bailey

Yes he did! It started about 1980 and ran for quite a few seasons. As a teenager I looked forward to those creepy tales every week. Created by Roald Dahl and all the "tales" were based on his stories I believe.

Suzy Bailey

Geoff you have the absolute perfect voice for narrations, I never tire of listening to it. This was deliciously suspenseful and a little creepy (I watch far too many horror movies to be scared). The inflection in your landlady voice was just enough, especially when you said "perfectly preserved" to raise a few goosebumps! This was the first read through? Impressive! Thank you so much, I loved it.

Hugmany Foemen

That's it. And, as I recall, some of them were very 'adult', which probably caused my parents some embarrassment when I was watching ;-)

Liz Munro

This has overtaken The Raven as my FAVOURITE Geoff narrations

Jacklinka

This is the best! I forgot all about the time.

Sarah Reach

I go tent camping fairly regularly, and Geoff's narrations are the perfect accompaniment to a dying campfire on a chilly autumn night.

Suzy Bailey

Haha, yes. Thankfully my parents were very early to bed most of the time leaving me free to enjoy, though I do remember a few raised eyebrows on occasion!

Lorraine Tellei

I love Geoff's voice in Voiceplay, his clone productions and reading stories. What i don't like is the way he reads poetry stopping at the end of lines when there is no punctuation. Poetry should be read like prose, following the punctuation. The author's underlying rhythm and rhyme will emerge without stopping at the ends of lines with no periods nor commas.
