I'm not entirely sure if this poem is supposed to be horrifying or silly, but my own experience with Alice Through The Looking Glass was waaaaay more terror than fun. I recall being scared out of my mind by The Jabberwocky when I was younger and honestly, it's still pretty darn intimidating.

"Beware the Jabberwock my son, The jaws that bite, the claws that catch".

Read those words a few times and see what your imagination conjures. Nothing snuggly, to be sure.

Enjoy the poem. Enjoy your evening. And Enjoy a little mimsy in the borogoves.

Thank you! I can’t wait to listen to this tonight!!!

Katie D

Can't wait to listen! I haven't read this in a long time, looking forward to hearing your narration 😁

Debs Badger

Brilliant! However, isn't his last name spelled "Carroll"?

Annie A.

In the words of the wise Elizabeth Zharoff: "DELIGHTFUL!" 😉

Hunter

I have a very vivid imagination so this is making me think things...not to mention my shoulders are up to my ears. That growl though....almost had me fooled in thinking it was you. Well played.

Rebekah Galy-Davis

I memorized and recited Jabberwocky at some point in school. I didn’t sound anywhere near this ominous. Gotta love a frumious Bandersnatch shunning. You’re the only person I know of who could take all that portmanteau gibberish and make it sound so serious.

Maggie S

Oh, that was delicious! Thank you!

Els Peeters (=jopperke)

Brrrr! 'The claws that catch' made my hair stand on end and sent shivers down my spine. Well done sir!

Tara Congo

I've loved The Jabberwocky for so long and you just nailed it!! What a wonderful, creepy nonsense poem. Really enjoy how you played up the dark strangeness of this one.

Kaleigh Henderson

I get that this is supposed to be scary, but for some reason hearing all those ridiculous nonsense words spoken in a deep, gravelly voice, serious as a heart attack, made me laugh my head off. Well, silly or scary, it's enjoyable either way. Thanks Geoff!

Angie Woollard

Geoff, thank you for these unexpected spooky treats! You spoil us. ☺️ (In particular, I loved how you pronounced “catch.” A strange thing to pinpoint, perhaps, but it caught my ear as particularly evocative.)

Marlo Schalesky

All these fun, spooky gifts! Love them all. Thank you so much, Geoff!

Alisha Watson

I was listening to this in my car and you'll be happy to know that bassy stomp made me jump pretty good😆 I had to memorize this during a stage production of Alice in Wonderland. Can't believe I still remember all the words. Excellent reading! P.S. The 1985 Alice in Wonderland movie had a depiction of the Jabberwocky that scared me to death as a kid. The effects are laughable by today's standards, but they were terrifying at the time. https://youtu.be/M4a-FHuVlCg

alice collins

Thanks Geoff. The two Alice books are near and dear to my heart. Now you might want to read Lewis Padgett's short story "Mimsy were the Borogoves." (The movie adaptation was a travesty.)

Eileen Parkman

Love this! I had to memorize Jabberwocky in college and present it as a non-Wonderland character in college -- so much fun!

Jordi S

Thank you! Loved listening to this.

Rachael Heidi

Got something to listen to now! Thanks Geoff! Off to bed I go :D

Carol Franklin

Definitely creepy & fun! I love listening to you read. I have loved all three readings for different reasons. The Roald Dahl was new to me I know a lot of his adult stories but not that one. I hadn’t heard Annabel Lee for years and had forgotten how haunting it is. And the Jabberwocky like all Carroll very complex. Great readings thank you

Janet Towles

Absolutely enthralling!! When you read it, I can really hear and imagine the story instead of just a bunch of nonsense. The sound effects made me jump a couple of times too. Thanks, been hoping you would do this one for a while! Love it!

Stacy Toth

So good. Got some pretty creepy vibes from that narration. Geoff, you can read anything and it sounds amazing. Love it.

Gretchen G

I love Jabberwocky! Your reading is great, especially "Beware the Jabberwock my son, / The jaws that bite, the claws that catch." ☃️ Chills! Also: "This particular version would be a perfect companion to a dark and stormy night under a tum tum tree." Well, it is dark out, it was stormy last night, and while I don't have a tum tum tree, I do have a bottle of peppermint Tums. How's that? Perhaps not quite the same mood, I admit . . . But one does the best that one can. 🙃

Suzy Bailey

Oooh I absolutely love your darker, creepier reading of this! Because of all the nonsense words I always thought of it as rather whimsical, but you managed to give me goosebumps and make me smile at the same time.(Good grief Geoff, I think you could make the info on a cereal packet sound menacing!) Thank you for all the spooky gifts, you are a gem!💎🙂💕

Robert Ferney

I don't do this very often, but Squee! This is my favorite poem of all time. I even had a chance to sing a number to this once in high school. This is so very nice.

Tine

I had to look up the text because as a non native English speaker I was wondering have I gone mad or have you?😂 Then realizing which poem it is, woah! I REALLY enjoy your narration of it and will be relistening that regularly. The pacing you chose is perfect, the different volume and emphasis on different words fit just right. I really like the clarity on 'The jaws that bite, the claws that catch', that gave me chills. You found such a great rhythm for this one! This was awe-inspiring, surely.

DnD Addict

One of my all time favourite poems. As a nonsense poem it is normally read quite jovially, however hearing it in your wonderful deep tone brought a new darkness to it. Thank you for this one Geoff.... Love it!

Jacklinka

Geoff, you try so hard to scare that it turns out funny, not scary. It's really terribly funny, I was having lunch at work while I was listening and almost choked with laughter. Nearly "burbled as it came!" :))) But seriously, I was afraid that I would miss the proper English accent, but you bring so much personality to your reading that I immediately forgot about it and really enjoyed it. Thank you!

Cynthia Peterson

I remember my grandfather reciting this to me when I was younger ( decades ago lol). I love your rendition, which adds a spookier feel. Great job!

Sarah Reach

I have never been a fan of Lewis Carroll's work, but this was delightful. I appreciate so much you continuing with narrations, I enjoy them so very much.

Sarah Reach

I have a ridiculous narration idea/suggestion. In the comments of every narration you have done, I see a comment along the lines of "I could listen to you read the phone book/dictionary/tax code/etc." I think for April Fools Day, you should test and see if that is true. Hype a new narration to release on April 1st, and it be just a minute or so of complete nonsense reading your cereal box ingredients or something. 🤣

Lioba

Love it! Thank you so much for this gem! Funfact: Lot of the nonsens words invented by Carroll are now in the Oxford English Dictionary 😄

Dan Black

Wonderful! Is this going to be public later, or is it always Patreon-only? (I'd go into more detail about what I liked… but it's what others have already said!)

Dan Black

This gets my vote, too! Or you could read from a car maintenance manual -- ooooooo, or do a "cover" of the classic (and facetious) Chrysler Turbo Encabulator! If it's for April Fool's Day, you could tell everyone you're switching your channel to focus on car maintenance. There have been several versions -- see search results: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fake+chrysler+training+video …but I think the best one is probably this: https://youtu.be/MXW0bx_Ooq4 Transcripts are available various places if you search. And there's more info here, with more good links under "References" and "External links": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turboencabulator

Never having been used to think of this poem as frightful, I enjoyed your interpretation and reading of it. Lewis Carroll is one of my favorite wordsmiths. It's good to see others enjoy him. Also, it has been my practice to pronounce manxome as manks-um.

CookieVA

His voice puts me to sleep. So smooth like butter.

Hunter

Smooth like butte,r pull you in like no other?
