In the interest of full disclosure, this is one of those songs that I probably wouldn't have ever picked out for myself  to record even though It's a song that I always enjoyed listening to, in a "huh, it's really weird that this got radio play" kinda way, but it never really struck me as a song that had much of a following or that many other folks had a feeling either way about it. I mean, let's be honest with each other, when is the last time you EVER heard somebody request Big Bad John at a bar mitzvah or a wedding or from a DJ or on a jukebox, or really anywhere? When's the last time you've even heard this song PLAYED anywhere? It's not exactly an ear-friendly pop-tune, is it? Can you even line dance to Big Bad John? Can you nod your head along to the beat? CAN YOU POKEY TO THIS HOKEY!? REVEAL TO ME YOUR SECRETS OH OUTLIER OF MID CENTURY MUSICALITY I MUST KNOW!!!

I've pooped myself again. Excuse me.

BUT there is something about the story of Big John that sticks with you, It sticks with you like a very very sticky... um... gummy bear? And then there's the matter-of-fact way that Jimmy Dean delivers the lyrics that invite you to listen to the words in a more active manner. So, I think you'll agree that there's a certain, je ne sais quoi about Big Bad John, if you'll pardon my French.

That being said, I've gotten positively blown up with requests for this country-fied old school rap, so I dug out my finest mining tools (again) and my very best tank tops (again) and i got to work re-creating a song that apparently has a HUGE following of folks who hold it dear and are incredibly quiet about it until they're asking me to record it. And then when they ask they ask loudly and often. Not that I'm complaining, i love getting texts from my mother in law at 3 in the morning asking me to record it. I'M WORKING ON IT, MOM. GO BACK TO BED!

Well, here it is, and I hope I delivered.

There are more than a couple covers of Big Bad John out there and this one will probably stand out to you as being the most musical version you've ever heard. I hope you'll forgive me for that indulgence, I couldn't help myself.

Cheers to you all, and I hope that if we're ever stuck in a mine together somewhere one of us remembers to bring snacks, might I suggest gummy bears.

Cloudy Skies

Another mining song "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by the BeeGees. I still know the lyrics by heart from listening to it REPEATEDLY.

Carly Smith

Perfect surprise while on the road for state choir!!! I’m so happy to watch it!!!

Derek Sandlin

Sounds amazing as always this is the one thing I always look forward to every month

Eileen Parkman

A local high school marching band played it this past season - so yeah, it shows up in unexpected places - looking forward to hearing your take on it (does Rowlf show up to play piano for you?) PS: I'll bring candy corn

Angie Woollard

I haven't listened yet, but after reading your (amazingly humourously witty, as usual) write-up, I just wanted to pop in and say that I was just saying to a few people, "I hope Geoff music-i-fies this song..." So not only will I forgive you for that indulgence, I will whole-heartedly applaud it! *stands and applauds with whole heart* And now, to listen...

Rachael Heidi

OK I had never heard this song before but I love it! I just love the video vibe as well, oh my ❤️. I love how you're speaking as well as singing, that voice 😍. Bravo, Geoff!! Another one on repeat.

Debbie Goodling

Oh my holy God! This is fantastic! I’m dead!

Suzanne

I completely forgot that this song existed!! I love it, thank you

Olivia

Wow, never heard it before, will be hearing it a lot now. That was amazing!! I like your mining series😂

Sophie Plourde

This is really cool! Like a mix between your narrations and music😁

Lady Wytch

This is fantastic! This was always one of my father's favorite songs and I am sure he's looking down now, and laughing at me for enjoying it so much!

Debs Badger

You were in rare form with this write-up tonight, Geoff... 🤣🤣🤣

Margo Zimny

I loved your take on this oldie but goodie! Your voice is remarkable as always. This song reminds me of my dad playing records with this as one of the songs he enjoyed. Thank you for the memories! BTW, I worked at a Trona mine and that's where I met my husband. P.S. your writing cracks me up.

CookieVA

Love it so much. I think this is tied as my favorite. (Tied with Sixteen tons) I guess I like mining songs and Geoff’s in tank tops. Huh never realized.... amazing like always 🥰⛏

Huldra Draco

awesome as always, Geoff! 💖

Katie D

I've heard this song a hundred times, but never have I heard it like this. Incredible job Geoff, thank you for this! And your written introduction for this post is outstanding 🤣

Åse M Bruun Lagnestål

I had never heard that song. But when it was revealed you were going to do it, I checked it out. That was a challenge, and you surely delivered the best version of it! …as always. Thank you! 🥰 …and one of the clones from 16 tons joined. 😍👍

Pete Magill

You did it! Great job, Goeff - through those "repeats" you (and your three other selves) created plenty of fun, interesting variety. Very nice!

Emily Houk

Amazing!! I loved all the elements and the spoken parts blended seamlessly!

CookieVA

For my “senior prom” because of Covid we technically didn’t have one but some students got together and did a prom at the fair grounds. It was mostly theater and choir kids. Weirdly this song was played a lot during prom. I think it was played more than 30 times from 8 pm to midnight.

John Watson

As a dude named John who is 6’5” and 280 lbs I’ve heard this song for as long as I’ve been alive…well, part of it anyway. I never liked the song until recently and while I absolutely love your stuff I was skeptical. My skepticism turned to amazement and I can’t want to get a handle on how to sing this version. Well, minus the subharmonics for now, haven’t quite figured those out. Anyway, thanks so much for doing this as well as constantly cranking out awesome music. No hyperbole when I say that discovering VoicePlay and you have profoundly improved my life. Thanks to The Charismatic Voice for her introduction to you guys. I’d love to see a colab with her in it. Praise God for such instruments and talents.

Cynthia Ross

Yes. Yes it IS the most musical version. What you did with the background vocals is not only interesting but hooky too. You earned that indulgence, enjoy it! I've known this song since I was a baby - my grandfather used to walk around singing it. And since you're insisting...lolz...I wouldn't have picked this one, but if you're really wanting mining songs, there's a few more out there. This is the first one that came to my mind. Workin' In a Coal Mine, originally done in the '60's by Lee Dorsey, remade later by Devo IDK if links work here, but both versions are on the tube of You. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7ND17Zf68s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0sKalTgzPs

Hana Keindlová

Your posts are always a treat a to read, made me laugh here again. I love Big Bad John for years, since childhood as I grow up on a lot of country music. But to be honest, in our version, as I loved the lyrics and the melody. Just some time later I got to listen to others version. Let me say here I really very enjoyed the "most musical version" of the song. I don't want to talk about each and every part, but in short - there are moments when I melted, when I was teary and when I was smiling with indescribable satisfaction of hearing it from you. Thank you so much for making this cover. And thank for making me realize that I actually quite enjoy mining songs. 🖤

Jennifer

I didn't know the song, but I'm glad to hear your version of it. You did a fantastic job. Loved the background vocals too.

María Gabriela

I've just experienced one of the worst weeks of my life, health-wise, and I'm just slowly starting to recover. This definitely gave a smile to my face. That country growl, Geoff, jeez! Thank you for this!

Jamie T.

I was so excited when the first teaser for this came out - I'm one of those who requested this & I've been hoping so hard that this was indeed going to be Big Bad John. You did such a fantastic job - it was so worth waiting for. I'm going to go listen again and again and again...... (Oh, and thanks to your Mom-in-law for helping us out here!)

Heather Gibson

Never heard the song but, I had a blast to your version of this song. Loved it!

Jess M

Will listen to this first thing tomorrow (or today to be exact). And yeah, of course I'll bring the good Haribo gummy bears (not the ones which seemed to trigger that problem you had after writing the first paragraph 😬; those were an US-only thing).

Alex Walker

I heard this song in the past, but never cared for it. Only YOU CAN MAKE IT THAT GREAT, GEOFF!! 😍❤️

Dawn Ours

One from my memories growing up, yup it's danceable (usually similar to a 2 step) I remember it for what I think it was always meant to be a how to be the person that matters when Life bites you in the butt. Take what is unusual about you and use that well. Also a redemption story, John killed a man was running from it and still made the redemptive decision to save others by sacrificing himself. Because sometimes that is exactly what is needed, so when given a choice Be like John. That's the lesson my Grandparents taught me by using this song as an example. I'm 56 they are long gone Guess I was paying attention after all. *chuckle They'd be shocked I'm sure. LOVE how you Rise to Challenges and Love your Wit!

Amanda W

Jeez-o-pete! I'm pretty sure I felt the ground shake, when the mine came down. This is great Geoff. 💜

Roisin O'Brien

I love it! Reminds me of that song by CW McCall Convoy with the old country rap😁 Keep it up😍

David Williford

Hey G, how about "Workin' in a Coalmine?" Lawd......I am soooo tired....;-)

Debbie Goodling

This brings good memories of my childhood. Great job!

Amy Fredlund

I had never heard of this song, and when you described it as "country-fied rap" I have to say, I wasn't much looking forward to it, because I very much dislike both Country and Rap, but I gave it a listen anyway. While the lyrics are kind of depressing, I have to say I enjoyed the listen. Not a favorite, but still very enjoyable. *Jokingly suggests "Heigh-Ho" from Disney's Snow White.* Then *seriously thinks* "Actually...🤔" 😂🤣😂

Maggie S

Perfection! I am crying. I remember this song from my childhood. Best rendition yet. Thank you!

Amanda Hovendon

I swear these songs only existed for YOU to cover Geoff. This is ridiculously good. My Mickey Mouse headphones thank you 🙏🏻 ☺️ Also, if we were stuck in a mine somewhere together, not only am I bringing gummy bears, but I’m also bringing Skittles…..cause I love Skittles…

Gretchen G

You've really brought the story in this song to life. The spoken-singing parts showcase your talent as a storyteller/narrator, and the more musical parts add texture and emotion to the story. Fantastic! I love it!

Will Bracknell

Wow, this is amazing! It's one of my favorites to sing at karaoke. I'm really glad you did it justice, Geoff!

Beth Comer

Absolutely amazing. Takes me back to being a kid, sitting on my bedroom floor and listening to my parents' old 45s on my turntable. And if songs with repetitive structure are kind of difficult, I probably ought to hold off suggesting Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, yes? (Although I can absolutely hear you covering some Gordon Lightfoot)

Paulene Thorne

Unlike Sixteen Tons, which I'd always liked (and my induction to the Geoff/Voiceplay world), I'd never really paid this song much attention - till now. WOW, JUST WOW. Totally unexpected musicified version. And it works so well. Geoff, you're a genius.

Janet Wright

I’ve heard this song, along with 16 Tons, so often. When the Dust Bowl ruined my grandparents farm in N Dakota , Grandpa went down south and worked in the mines. This song always made me sad. Poor John.

Ellen L Brownell

Thank you for that amazing rendition. And yeah I was crying but then this song has always made me cry.

D. Maenad Schluter

This is a great combination of your singing and narration. For mining song my roommates told me to tell you Diggy Diggy Hole. :-p

Janet Wright

Oh, yes! Working in a coal mine (going down down down)!!!! Can’t wait to hear what you would do with “whoops, about to slip down”

Debbie Buck

Loved your write-up and your video intro! Yes, this is quite different from Jimmy Dean's version which I heard a lot in the past and liked, but your originality and musicality in this version is outstanding! Thank so much, Geoff!

Caroline Larochelle

Thank you very much! My dad used to sing that song to my brother and I when we were 4 or 5 years old. Every time, he was laughing after the "Big Bad John" drop in the low register. And, by the way, no apologies needed: your French is flawless! :) Merci beaucoup! Excellent travail! Proud to be one of your patrons. Keep going! :)

Amanda Hovendon

“Pokey to this hokey” 🤣🤣🤣I can’t.

AM Person

Love this version with the extra musicality! So good, I actually spontaneously clapped at the end without thinking! I wonder if the mining theme is because people are always looking for a metaphor to describe your voice that is lower than a basement and thus the association with mines and underground?

Debs Badger

I'd LOVE to hear "Sundown" or "If You Could Read My Mind".

Beth Comer

Those were the other two songs I was thinking of as well!!!

candi lunsford

Your creativity and ability to pull the maximum amount of emotion from the songs you do is just incredible. Just when I always think you've reached a limit you shoot way over the top of it. This rendition is even better than the original. I think we ask for these because we know you'll always give us goosebumps and/or hit us right in the feels. Mission accomplished again, sir. Thank you so much.

Brontesaurus Rex

Ooooo, that was satisfying. I don't have any mining songs, but if you'll take railroad songs/folk songs of mysterious origin, I'd loooove to hear you tackle "In the Pines"/"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"

Tom Smith

Superb! I'll dig through my old folk albums, but the first coal song that leapt to mind is "Coal Tattoo" by Billy Edd Wheeler. Very different from the previous songs you've done.

kris ivy

Well this rendition will count as Exhibit A: how to make a repetitive song engaging. Also, I believe that we should be suggesting all types of songs to you and not just bass songs. With that in mind ( since you are a John Mayer fan), how about rearranging Gravity?

Hunter

Considering I had JUST heard the original about 24 hours ago, I already had a somewhat muddy idea of what to expect, but, once again, my mental visual was thrawrted by this. It gave me the chills, and like I have said before, story-like arranging is a must and with this, you, in a friend of mine's words: "Sang the story". Now for me to listen to it again, to pick up on all those musical pieces that I missed. Well done on everything! And as far as reaching your limits, always take that step back if you feel like you've gone too far. Don't burn yourself out at our expense.

Mikki Fullerton

First impression listen, I loved the higher pitched pick noises with the varied timing, the lower pitched pick or maybe shaker noise usually in rhythm, the variation on the timing used for different phrases of the story, the choices for different octaves for different emotional effect, the build-up of the layered sounds making intensity at the mine collapse part, and the use of a kind of round somewhat after that. Overall I liked it much better than other versions I could find on YouTube (or the way Dad used to sing it - sorry Dad!) So to go with ' country-fied story songs' how about Ol' Red? And to make you keep innovating new music where there just isn't enough, how about Rains of Castamere?

candi lunsford

Your creativity and ability to bring out the emotions in the songs you do is the best in the business. We ask for these because we know you'll hit us right in the feels. One that I would really love to hear you do is Poor Wayfaring Stranger. It's such a moving song and you would absolutely do it justice. For another country song I'd have to go with Ol' Red originally sung by George Jones. For a lighter one, and maybe for Halloween Little Red Riding Hood. Please do the howl. LOL And for one to make us swoon, Evermore. Whatever you pick we'll be anxiously waiting. Thank you soooooo much for all the beautiful music!

Tracie Schlaak

The Geofftet does it again. Love the arrangement. Nice job!!❤️

Jennifer L. Cramp

Justice done! I noticed the 16 Tons nod/tribute - white tank Geoff looked exactly the same, even down to the pickax thump right at the end 😊. This song just begged to have you do it, to get the Geoff treatment. I enjoyed the contrast of the backup Geoff's higher registers alongside main Geoff's low bass. I appreciated the more somber tone of this song. I don't try to do a hefty vocal analysis as my basic music theory training is 30 years rusty and I'm a 7 year school band nerd (Trumpet/ Trombone/Euphonium💜). My mom taught me piano and trained my ear. She was our family vocalist - a gorgeous operatic Soprano. I now wish I had asked her for some vocal lessons. Thank your mother in law for us for "encouraging" you to do this song👍. As always, your post write up above was awesome, extremely entertaining! Thank you for your efforts on our behalf! Oh, and I'd bring to the mine - Jelly Belly Jelly Beans, although I'm not fond of the buttered popcorn flavor, someone else can have those.

Mikki Fullerton

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention I laughed right out loud at the preview write-up no less than three times and got shushed by my husband who is trying to get some work done. Thanks for the smile tonight and I'm sure he'll laugh at it also when he's done working. ;)

Kaleigh Henderson

This is incredible. I only heard the original song for the first time on Friday, but your version is vastly more musical and more gooder. Sorry, Geoff voice make brain English bad. Anyway, since everyone here is suggesting more mining songs, I'm going to suggest a song that is a complete polar opposite to those kinds of songs in every possible way. Could you please consider singing the song Rainbow Connection from the Muppet Movie? It's one of my favorite songs of all time, and it was a lullaby that my grandma used to sing to me when I was itty bitty. I think you could take it and make something heart-shatteringly gorgeous. Love you and everything you do, Geoff! All the best to you and yours.

María Gabriela

Oh, I almost forgot: If there are bloopers please send them our way! They are always fun to watch x)

John Rogers

My dad would sing this song to me. I turned out to be a pretty Big John.. 6'4" 345

ObscureReferenceWoman

Oh, man.... love this song from way back, and you do a magnificent job. Oh, damn, three tank tops! My great-grandad died in a mine collapse in Bisbee, AZ in 1907. Wish he'd had a Big Bad John to save him. This is def going in my playlist rotation! Thank you for another wonderful song & video!

Suzy Bailey

I've never heard this before, music-i-fied or otherwise and I loved it. You had me smiling from ear to ear! I especially loved the understated, delicate texture of the harmonies, wonderful!😊⛏👍💜

Veronica Thunander

My goodness!! It's amazing!! That may be why we keep requesting even these repetitive songs - we know that you are up to the task and will perform beyond our greatest expectations! Thank you for this!!

Gretchen G

I was trying to think of other songs about mining and the only one I could think of was that weird Snow White / coal mining video Rammstein did for Sonne. Not really Geoff's sort of thing though, I don't think. 😂😅

Jill Knowles

AAwwwoooooo...I mean Baa... LOL, couldn't resist. I love Little Red Riding Hood.

Tine

Oohh thank you!

Tara Congo

So I looked up Big Bad John for the first time a few months ago after seeing tons people recommending it for you in the comments section of your videos. I admit that I didn't really get the hype - it's clearly a beloved classic for many, but it didn't really grab me. That made me a little apprehensive of your cover, but I shouldn't have been. Once again, you've flipped a song on its head to make it your own, in every way for the better. That was fantastic! Combines two of my favourite things: your music and your narrations. Hopefully the next song is a little easier on you in the repetition sense, but we really appreciate your creativity. I have no mining song suggestions, alas. I will take the opportunity to recommend one other random song, though - Wicked Game by Chris Isaak 😁 It's such a good one!! Not quite as repetitive, and at least it has a chorus...?

Jessica Danowski

I could definitely get behind Geoff singing I German, he has the perfect voice for it. IMO.

Jessica Danowski

This was fantastic. Not a mining song but I'd love to hear you do Hurt or Bird on a Wire. I think you have a great voice for both of these. <3

Barbara Binney

Well, since you asked, the last time I heard someone “request” this song was 2 weeks ago at a local pub that I’ve been known to patronize on occasion (and by “on occasion,” I mean “often”). They have one of those fancy Touch Tunes machines (modern version of a jukebox), and someone actually paid money to hear this song. When I heard it, my first thought was “I bet Geoff would do a great version of this song,” and I was right. Well done, sir. Well done. It is definitely the most musical version I’ve heard, and I absolutely love it. Thank you.

Judy Wilde

I heard this a lot growing up and really wasn’t too excited to hear you do it. But I did like the more lyrical setting. You did good on it. I’d actually like for you to do something in your baritone range for a change. (Everyone knows by now that you have more than just a deep voice, or at least they should. ). I’d love to hear you do some Jim Croce, particularly Photographs and Memories.

María Gabriela

Right?! He sounds OVERLY excited and with a few extra (tons) of coffee on him. Very funny to read, though x)

Tara Congo

Also, how in the world did you transform that storage space so thoroughly into such a cool set?? I saw the picture you showed at the web chat - lighting goes a long way, of course, but that's still pretty wild.

Tiredlady

Amazing as always! We loved what you did to this song! I think I would vote with the person above who suggested 'Rainbow connection' though it isn't a mining song, because the only mining type song I can think of is 'My Darling Clementine'! O.o

Monica Jones

I haven’t heard this song in ages! Magnificent as always!!!!!

Carol Franklin

In the interests of full disclosure, as someone famously said, I wasn’t one of the people requesting this because I’ve never liked it. I was genuinely worried this would be the first cover I didn’t enjoy. I need to have more faith in you. I would like to award you a lorry load of Gummy Bears because this version was brilliant I was hooked. Also I think there are a lot of Leonard Cohen songs that you could add something to.

Joanna

So awesome. On the mining song theme, there is the Bee Gees “New York Mining Disaster” bit of a sad one too. The only happy mining song that comes to mind is Heigh-Ho from Snow White and Seven Dwarfs 🤪

MarySue Crossett

i have no mining requests but was thoroughly delighted with your version. i will be listening to it many more times. can't help but think of jimmy dean and i think he would approve. great work . cannot wait to see/hear what you come up with next. blessings to you and your team.

Michael Lackey

Excellent as always. Though I do understand why you chose to use the final line that you did, gotta keep it family friendly after all, but I personally still prefer "At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man", I guess it's cause I grew up hearing the version with that ending instead of the "radio friendly" version.

Sarah Reach

Welp, I definitely qualify as one of those "folks who hold it dear and are incredibly quiet about it until they're asking (you) to record it." Way to call me out like that, lol. Story songs were a bit of a trend in the sixties and were well represented in my parents collection of vinyl records and 45s that I grew up listening to. I don't share my love for these songs often publicly because they do feel dated and a little niche, but the moment I heard you breathe new life into Sixteen Tons I knew Big Bad John was at the top of my wish list for an update. I feel vindicated in my belief that this song is perfect for you- because you absolutely crushed it! Thank you so much! As far as other mining songs are concerned, I think I have reached the bottom of my wish list under that very specific topic. However, I am really loving the folk songs you keep gravitating to - or perhaps being steered towards. I will repeat the requests for "Poor Wayfaring Stranger", and "In the Pines (Where did you sleep last night)"

Melissa Struxness

Cool!! Although saying "hell" would gave kept it classic. I will forgive you lol

Fly

Never heard this song before but I enjoyed it very much! I have a hunch that the number of enthusiastic requests you got for it *might* have been something to do with tank tops though :-)

Susan Smith

This was always one of my favorite songs. I have so many memories of my dad dancing with me before bed listening to this. Somehow I always find myself playing this at night, along with 16 Tons and Phantom 309. You definitely made my night. Thank you!

Rosie Boughen

Oh! You want mining songs? How about “Heigh-Ho” from Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs 💎⛏ 😁

J.L.

Never heard of it before, but then, not from the states, so. That deep rumble almost stirred up another balrog, though. =^,^=

Laxuji

Still, i would love to hear his Version of that amazing song

Shannon D

Wonderful! Definitely didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but I should know better by now,. haven't heard one I didn't like. I also think Poor Wayfaring Stranger would be amazing!

Rosie Boughen

Ok, so I’d never heard this song before yesterday (when all the guesses came through and I finally looked it up) so I have no nostalgia relating to this; I’m essentially going into this with fresh ears. WHHAAAAAATTTT?! I shouldn’t be tHiS surprised at how amazing this is, but I was bobbing my head along to the beat, and my jaw literally dropped by the end of it! Geoff, this is sooo good! 👏👏👏 I’m sure your mother-in-law had a bigger smile than me when she heard it, but then again… Also, side point: I know everyone loves the tank tops, but like… Narrator Geoff’s shirt is pretty nice, too 😘👌 Just sayin’.

Rosie Boughen

We’re gonna turn the Geoff Castellucci YouTube channel into a “Geoff sings mining songs” channel… and I’m not against it! 😁

Laxuji

Never heard that that song before, what a nice experience. I would love to hear you sing someday songs like "dance me to the end of love" or "fly me to the moon", thinking you'd be brilliant

Alisha Watson

Haven't heard this one since I was a kid! It really brings back memories of road tripping in the back of our station wagon, listening to old cassette tapes. I think adding to the musicality of the song was a wise decision, as the original can be seen as a little tedious to listen to if you're not used to that kind of music. On a side note, I really enjoy songs where you get to bring out a more twangy southern accent. It always makes me smile.

Jacklinka

This might be an American folk, I never haven't heard this song on the other edge of the world till yesterday when the guys mentioned it. I went and listened to several covers of it including, of course, the original and can't say that I was stricken and loved it from the first sight. Therefore, I was a bit sceptical about this one, but you killed it! (Him, I mean, Big Bad John, he is killed again and again, poor guy ☺️) You made this dark recitative song interesting, musical, catching and everything. And pleasuring to the ears and eyes. Thank you!

Diane Hodge

Loved it! Thank you for sharing your talent with us. My Dad used to sing this one along with "Sixteen Tons" and another one of Tennessee Ernie Ford's called "Mule Train".

Veronika Troll

I've never heard this song before but I really like what you created! :) sounds and looks very cool :)

Penny Cummings

I think the only thing that could have made this better was in there was a really, really, deep, intense, four-part subharmonic harmony!

Alison L

Fantastic, that's going to be going through my head all day at work now :)

Marie-charlotte Tesnier

Merci beaucoup geoff ! Never heard this song (poem ? Rap ?) before but i really enjoyed it ! 🤗🤗

Viktor Speer

Aah, I had forgotten all about this song - you have just unearthed some memories of me sitting in the back of my parents car and listening to the radio at some point during the 70's 🥰

Tracy Z

I don’t actually know if I’ve heard this before. I do love story songs and this was excellent. Thanks

Gillian Drysdale

love any song from big bad Geoff! Little RedRidingHood would be fantastic as well ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Frédérique Boudet

Hello !! Mais il a d'autres français/francophones ici, cool !

María Gabriela

That shirt definitely has to be added to his on-going collection.

Frédérique Boudet

I love your french !! Better than my english but i keep trying I never heard this song before, i just listen the original just before yours and i thougt it's really a song for geoff

Tiina Nyrhinen

What a way to wake up to Monday morning to find this waiting in Patreon 😍 I had forgotten this song but god I love it. Even more with Geoff singing it 🧡

Emily Dion

We like the miner songs cause we dig ya . . .

Dani

Wow! I really try to wrap my head around the fact, that you can think of so many ways to change up a song and make it even more entertaining and interesting. And also so much more.....you. But you can still totally recognize it. I listened to all the originals which were suggested in the comments in your teasers and Big Bad John was not my favourit, but it is one now. What a tough on for the four of you ;-) and you nailed it. Now we have the Geoff Miningverse with Big Bad Geoff, Geoffrey Oakenshield and 16-tons-of-vocals-Geoff. And.......If you would write down something every day, like a little diary in your very entertaining and creativ writing style, you would have a very cool book in no time. And you could narrate that on your channel too. Et voilà! The ridiculous life and work of Geoff Castellucci. Or: The Man that went into the bas(s)ement and never came back.

Jordan Hollis

Literal tears at the end! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT Geoff!!!! To say I was excited about this one would be a HUGE understatement. You always continue to amaze me at your covers!!! This is why your Patreon is completely worth it! Much love!

Whisp

I'm now desperately looking forward to 7 Geoffs singing "Hi Ho, Hi Ho" to carry on the mining theme!!

Marie-charlotte Tesnier

Mais oui!! La voix et le talent de Geoff traversent les océans et les frontières!

Amanda W

I've actually heard this song on the radio at work. My general manager is an old Southerner. This one sticks out as much as The Devil Went Down To Georgia, and Leroy Brown (I think that's the title.) You have one of those story telling voices that fits those kind of song. You did a great job with this.

DnD Addict

This is one of the most beautiful things ever. Such a wonderful and interesting arrangement

Dani

Also... I would bring something sour (no not a center shock but something near it) to compensate anything sweet and sticky 😆 your harmonies are sweet enough (and stick(y) to the ear )....... yeah yeah yeah and now we need something salty . Btw I still want that Devil went down to Georgia with Lane thing. I mean, people are requesting High Ho so....

William C. Linn

Another good idea is "A boy named Sue" by Johnny Cash. Anything that he'd done would fit your style

Mouton Noir

That was...beautiful. You are amazing. As a geologist, I truly appreciate your earthy tunes! As a Tolkien devotee, the Misty Mountains are my second home. And as a human, I love your storytelling. You just made my day!

Mouton Noir

The Devil going down to Georgia would totally not be fair to the Devil! You would blow him out like a candle!

von vulkvan

Hell yes! Thank you sir, that was awesome....

Cindy Barber

Whoo, that was awesome. I knew the song, wasn't 100% sure what you would do with it, but knew it would be interesting at the very least, and you did not disappoint (as usual). It's one of those songs that does stick with you, and even though it may not be currently popular, I love when you can pull out some of the classics and bring them life. Great job!

Geoff Castellucci

Yeah - the orig is just a bass guitar, drums, and vocals. Which is TOTALLY fine, but it needed a little something extra, for sure.

Geoff Castellucci

Yeah, you'd think I was born and raised in southern Georgia. I can't exactly explain the drawl... it just kinda happens.

Geoff Castellucci

Is that the song that goes "my girl my girl don't lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night?" ?

Geoff Castellucci

Thanks for noticing the 16 Tons guy. He was feeling un- noticed!

Rosie Boughen

It’s gotta happen! He *literally asked for it* !! 😂😂😂

Geoff Castellucci

That's interesting - I never knew the version with "Hell" in it even existed.

Laryn A. Tapp

I'm 58 and love that song...would bring it up on YouTube frequently. As for line dancing...can't think of one at the moment!

Jess M

Ooh, Geoff doing Rammstein 😯 yes, I wanna hear him roll the r like Till does. 😁

Geoff Castellucci

If you go WAAAAAy back into voiceplay's youtube channel, i'm wearing that shirt in the collab we did with street corner symphony before the singoff tour V2.

Sophie Plourde

I hope that goes in the YouTube caption😂

Gretchen G

It would be pretty awesome! 😄

Michael Lackey

Yeah it can be pretty hard to find, since that version was considered "profane language" for the time, the other version was the one most people know. My dad has a 33 with the original version on it.

Rosie Boughen

Ahh, so it’s *been* in the collection, but you finally pulled it back out and restyled it. Oldie but goodie! Please don’t wait another 7 years! 😁

Rosie Boughen

LOL NOT THE SUGAR-FREE ONES! 😳😰🤣 Mmmmmm. Gummy bears 😋

Lisa Pockat Bork

You blew this totally out of the water. LOVE IT!

Rosie Boughen

Looks like “Little Bitty Big John” is the prequel, too ☺️

Dani

🙄 20.000 Miles under the subharmonic then

Jordi S

The sound on this is so much more interesting and engaging than the original. I also really like what you did with the filming and camera angles. I saw someone mention the version where it says at the bottom of the mine lies one hell of a man. That's the one I used to hear also.

Lisa Lyons

Not a song about mining... but I would love to hear your take on "Camoflage" by Stan Ridgeway!

Emily

I'm not sure whether I'd heard this one before or not, but I listened to the original before watching this to get familiar with it. I found the original surprisingly catchy. As usual, I also really enjoyed hearing your take on it! Going to go play it over again several times now.

Emily

Also, when I think of mining songs (or mining-adjacent? definitely has different vibes than this one and 16 tons), Paradise by John Prine always comes to mind

Maegodorel

This was really great, I didn't know the original and I love the mix between music and storytelling! Also I find your clips more and more creative, with the camera moving and such, so well done!

Nakeyae Street

Love this! My ears are buzzing. My song suggestion is Hellfire

Tine

This one is SO interesting, Geoff! It feels like a bigger 'risk' to me than Shenandoah was. I was not really familiar with this song, besides having a listen or two when I saw people say it might be this one.. to say you gave this song a really good upgrade is an understatement at the very least. I really loved the continuous buildup, and all the small runs are really beautifully sung. You seem to have stayed very true to the original, yet also completely true to your own style, absolutely fascinating. I cannot stop listening to it. As people have said, a good combination of your music and narrations. The karaoke track will be so interesting to listen to and will be a track that stands on its own I believe.. Thank you for sharing that and broadening my horizons of the types of music I listen to and get familiar with.

Dan Black

Geoff, you said in the video that you wanted to know if we had any other mining songs… Well, this one is a bit different style, but it's definitely about mining… and I can actually imagine you doing an a cappella (or at least vocal-driven multi-track) version of it! Originally from Yogscast and written during/about Minecraft… Here's the Wind Rose version: https://youtu.be/34CZjsEI1yU And here's the original Yogscast version: https://youtu.be/ytWz0qVvBZ0 And the _original_ original clip of its very humble beginning: https://youtu.be/N-ePNomef68

Dani

That would be insane and like a sound of the whole mine collapsing. Is that even recordable?

Christina Dowdican

THIS IS AMAZING!!! Jimmy Dean would be proud! It took me back to my childhood & listening to it on an lol record & my Daddy whistling to it. Thank you so much for this. It’s definitely going on my playlist when it goes public. I gave a small list of songs on your previous post tho one wasn’t about mining but would be along the same style you have done in the mines. Lots of love & awesome music😊❤️

Hugmany Foemen

Perfect! As musical as I expected from you and you kept us guessing where you'd drop the low-low lows. The clones created lovely harmonies and the set/storeroom and camera work were spot-on. Not so much in the mine as in the company bunkhouse reminiscing. I can remember as a kid that this was probably the first song to make me cry - poor, heroic Big John didn't seem bad at all to my childish imagination :-(

Caroline Larochelle

Oui! Et on attend avec impatience une version du célèbre "S.O.S d'un terrien en détresse" de Starmania à la Castellucci!

Cassandra Collins

That was great. I'm not familiar with the song, but you always do really interesting arrangements.

Helen A

Narrator Geoff is telling us the story in a very engaging way. I've known this song all my life and yet I found myself really drawn in by the brave but sad tale of Big John. The harmonies provided by the tank top trio are subtle but they also invite the listener to come in closer and hear the story. I was bobbing my head along with them as I listened. I raise a pan of Jimmy Dean sausage links to you, sir! Well done putting a fresh coat of paint on this faded classic. 😊

Debbie Hudson

One of hubby's favorites!!!❤🎶 Thanks Geoff!! Only you could have done that song justice! Wow!!!😳😁 My brother worked in the Mines when he was 17 and he was claustrophobic. I need to send this to him!❤🇨🇦 Blessings to you and Kathy and your family!!🤗❤🎶🎶

Marie-charlotte Tesnier

Ouuuuuh, quelle douce idée !! Ce serait splendide ! (comme idée de chanson minière, j'avais en tête "les corons" de pierre bachelet mais ça fait un peu moins rêver !)

CookieVA

Yep. No it wasn’t 😂 but I am in Florida close to Alabama so I guess it makes sense. They played a lot of mining songs. I did play your version of Sixteen tons a lot tho. 🥰⛏

Penny Cummings

He'd be able to record it since he'd obviously have to do each part one at a time... But the playback of the mix? That might destroy buildings and collapse mines. :D

Marcello Bass

Probably the most effortless Low Gs you’ve ever done

Jennifer

I am also one of those that had never heard this song before - I'm guessing it's an American one that never made it across the pond - but I thoroughly enjoyed your rendition. I liked the visual differentiation between Narrator-Geoff, Soloist-Geoff and the backing-Geoffs as well. I don't have any mining songs to suggest, but if you felt like branching out into songs about other tough jobs with high death rates, may I suggest On the Railroad, or some of the less overdone sea shanties (I know, they were a thing and everyone's over them now, but there are a lot of lovely ones that were largely ignored while everyone recorded Wellerman). Also, those rambling comments genuinely made me laugh. I do, however, feel that sticky gummy bears would be a very poor choice to take into a mine - they'd get covered in icky dust - and as such will bring Cornish Pasties - proper mining food!

Dani

Yeah the mixing is what I meant, he could absolutely record that but that would be veeeeery irresponsible 🤣 Anyways I want to hear it. You should ask him in the next live chat, I second that 😁👍

Snappy

I've never even heard about this song before but your version is amazing, as always. Love the harmonies and instrumentations 🙂 And nice throwback to the 16 tons video. Or did you just run out of black tanktops? 😉

Caroline Larochelle

I can relate, John... Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline is still playing in my nightmares.🤯😅

Angie Woollard

Yep, the original definitely needed some...zhuzh. (I can honestly say I've never tried to type out that word before...) And you definitely zhuzh'd it. I've already begun my deep-dive into the arrangement.

Penny Cummings

I definitely will! And hopefully I won't accidentally sleep through the next chat! To be fair to me though, I wasn't feeling well and could barely stay awake.

Caroline Larochelle

In Paris, they aced it: vanilla ice-cream + a twirl of strawberry sundae topping... and Haribo gummy bears... Never seen in Canada so far.

shirokitsune

i never heard that song befor , but gosh with your voice its one on my new favorite

Angie Woollard

And so many of them too. (Maybe he was warmed up from all the G1s in Bruno...)

Jess M

That sounds delicious, but also very challenging for your teeth (cold gummy bears are hard 😦).

Desiree Cox

I was in the hospital with Kidney stones over the weekend and your video popped up and really cheered me up, because I always look forward to your new releases every month.

Caroline Larochelle

Let them melt slowly... Enjoying a meal is a sport in France! 😄

Gretchen G

"the tank top trio" 😂 Nice!

Joshua DeFriese

Never heard this song before tonight. I looked up the original and loved the story, but now I’ve listened to yours and I truly love the song. Keep doing inspiring work, Geoff! You and your crew never disappoint!

Christine Stromberg

Amazing, I was just watching you being a Disney princess not talking about Bruno! This is amazing, so different from the old version I know and had me quite teary at the end. You're just amazing. Did I say that already?

Lexy Wolfe (aka Pam)

I think the reason there's been a revival of interest in mining songs is because there are several groups of miners striking lately. Anything that hews to the blue collar worker and shining a light on their dedication and loyalty (and either the explicit or implicit abuse by those they work for.)

Sarah Reach

I'll add another vote to "If you could read my mind"

Sarah Reach

Oh, if we are looking into deadly jobs songs - I love The Highwayman (by the Highwaymen.) There are four reincarnated characters, perfect for the four Geoffs.

David Hamilton

All my family is from south eastern Kentucky and I'm loving these songs. But then I haven't heard anything that hasn't impressed me sir. Great rendition Geoff.

Shirley B Karr

Heck yeah! Much as I love Jimmy Dean, you successfully flipped and twisted and made this more interesting than the original. Well done! For suggestions, sure, there's Devo's Working In A Coal Mine, but... I'm ready to go aboveground. Something more upbeat. As awesome as 16 Tons and Big Bad John are, the miner has no prospects of getting out of debt and Big John died a heroic death but he's still, y'know, dead. I've seen a lot of requests for you to do Ghost Riders in the Sky by Johnny Cash (which would be fabulous!). But how 'bout something more playful, like My Name is Sue? Or Little Red Riding Hood by Sam the Sham? (Even though what's-his-name, the other bass singer with a grey streak ;-) has performed it. Your version would be better.) My introduction to your talent was Monster Mash. One of the details I love about that video is that each clone has a distinct personality. I'd love to see more story videos like that, to showcase your sly sense of humor and mad arranging skills. Seriously, who else would think to shuffle and swing Toccata and Fugue? You improved Bach, fercryingoutloud!

Lorraine Tellei

so are you also going to do Big Bruce and Big Irving?

Dawn Ours

Not mining but from the era when people were more transient in life Roger Miller's King of the Road bring on the costumes and all your clones it could get really interesting IF you pre-plan the Railroads will work with you concerning equipment/track locations and such OR just use https://www.goldcoastrailroadmuseum.org/ https://www.frrm.org/train-rides/ there are 9 RR Museums in FL WOW.

Del Rhea Watson

I am now awash in tears. This song was one of my dad’s favorites. I grew up listening to this song, Sixteen Tons, Roger Miller’s King of the Road, so many others. I sang every word along with you, even so many years later. I don’t remember crying over BBJ before, but coupling this song with memories of my dad? Bittersweet. I salute you for this moving version of this song from my childhood. Your music always strikes a chord with me, as it were. ❤️

Gary Wagner

I guess I'm just an old fart because I remember this song well. As usual, you took the original and vastly improved it. Every new song from you is a pleasure, treasure and a

Frédérique Boudet

Starmania chanté par Geoff, en voilà une belle idée !J'adore vraiment cette comédie musicale

Chantal Lardeau

I didn't know this song, your cover is very nice and made me want to know the orginal song

Hanne Marit Leikvoll

LOVE IT! 😍 thank you so much, you are like King Midas of music, everything you toutch turn in to gold!

Dani

Oh my god, I totally forgot about that song. When I was about 18, I had a boyfriend who was a big fan of Kris Kristofferson and he introduced me to The Highwayman. That would be beyond amazing. I have to go and listen to that tune, thank you for the reminder :-)

Anthony Kern

I think of you covering many songs, including this one and I'm glad you did! Very nice!

Jay Fritz

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was the video that introduced me to you, Misty Mountains just blew me away, Shenendoah brought me to tears. (Women have cried when I have sung, and it always puzzled me because I didn't think it was that bad..... I know you're probably similarly puzzled by that, but words can't describe how beautiful it is). I love High and Dry more than I can tell you. Once again, you've knocked it out of the park and done a great job of setting the mood and telling the story. Love it. (I had to edit this because I forgot to say how amazing 16 Tons is, and Blackbird, and--well, everything you've done!)

Jessica

Great job Geoff amazing as always I love all of your videos.

Randiskye

That was my first thought when listening to his intro!😹😹

Randiskye

I'd up vote Edmumd Fitzgerald for VoicePlay for sure!

Randiskye

Gary- not an old fart; here we call ourselves charter members of the Old & Boring Society. We even have shirts!😹😹

Randiskye

This was a childhood favorite but I hadn't heard it in many years. As always, you brought it forward in time without losing its original intention. That is a rare quality and I applaud you for that ability. On a side note: what the heck is your obsession with pooping?!? Do you need the sugar free Haribos? 😹😹😹😹 JK-great work on this song and video, with Kathy's help, as always. (I hope you share your gummy bears with her, she definitely earned them!)

Tanith Aslette

I have to second that recommendation for Wicked Game.

Rachel Blackthorne

I cannot wait until this comes out as an mp3...it has become my 5 to midnight track...the last thing I play before my phone goes onto Do Not Disturb mode and I have no sound. It is SO relaxing that I am actually getting nearly 5 hours sleep a night which is AMAZING for me... Thank you Geoff! 💗

Michael Flynn

Only other mining song I can think of is one that I think was made for the game mincraft. Diggy Diggy Hole

Mia

I've always found this song slightly boring, due to its repetitive nature. This version was captivating as a narrative, as well as tremendously pleasing as a song. Super job.

Larry Haynes

I personally thought it was extremely creative and much more entertaining than the original. Kudos man, another home run Sir Geoff!

Rebecca Mangelsdorf

I would like information from Geoff or his agent on how to book him for a concert. Can anyone give me this information?

Maureen Black

Marvelous rendition! I do know another mining song - "Tell God and the Devil" by Solas. I don't know if it would suit you, but you did ask...

Novi Hallberg

hmm.. another repetative miningsong.. Heigh Ho with the dwarfs from snowwhite xD yes i admit, i just wanna see you portrait all the different dwarfs =P

Kenneth Finnegan

When I was a boy my parents had a 45 of Big John. I used to listen to it over and over and over again. This song brings me back
