If you don't know JD Sumner - go look him up and have your mind melted. Then come back here and be underwhelmed by my underwhelmingness.

I grew up on jd sumner and the stamps. You are not underwhelming

Karen & Lauren

But you are far more pleasurable to hear....

Angie Woollard

Oh Geoff that was FANTASTIC!!! I love seeing you have fun in the studio. I much prefer your voice to JD's - apologies for the blasphemy. Ohhhhh you will always win my heart with sprinklings of dominant seventh chords. 😍 Actually, those last six words are unnecessary.

Tine

*standing ovation* Oh that was SO wonderful Geoff. What a wonderful little video to share with us. That sounds so cool and is SO entertaining, I loved the little smirk and you just having fun with it. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Debbie Buck

Geoff - thank you!! This is gorgeous!! ❤️❤️

Shannon D

JD Sumner is awesome, but so are you! Thanks for that treat, it was wonderful 😊

Sarah Reach

When you give a patron a live clip, she's going to want a fully produced video to go with it... soooo, full vid when? 😁😍🤩

Lady D Richter

I remember that song from when I was little(er, never grew much taller) My grandpa used to sing the old version of it.

Eileen Parkman

What a delight! Thank you so much. You have lots of awesomeness all of your own 💕💕

Anja Eder

Geoff, thank you for this wonderful little video!!!!! :)

Mikki Fullerton

OOoooo I loved this one, such a fun one! Thanks!!

Gretchen G

Well, I am thoroughly impressed and intimidated by that final slide down and that intense stare. 😳😂 Love this! Thank you so much, Geoff! 💙

Amanda Hovendon

This isn’t underwhelming. It’s OVERWHELMING WITH GLORIOUSNESS. Is that even a word?

Erica

JD Sumner was a legend, and you did his song justice. This is wonderful. Thank you.

Filiz E

There is nothing underwhelming about your performance it was brilliant🥰❤ Thank you, Geoff!

Randiskye

Nicely done Geoff. I imagine J.D. would have enjoyed this homage.

Jessica

Nicely done jd Sumner is one of my favorite bass singers. You did an awesome job with this song as you always do thank you Geoff ♥️

Katherine Powell

Geoff, you know we will never find you underwhelming. This was great. Thank you for sharing with us.

Cordelia Palmer

Beautiful. I have a migraine and your voice is soothing my brain. Thanks!

Jacky Friedman

Dang Geoff. That was beautiful. Love the scruff too. Looks good on ya. And your eyes are nice and bright today.

Jason Cranford

Golly gee! That was awesome Geoff as usual!

Gillian Drysdale

thank you sir that was wonderful and just goes to show you don’t need studio effects to make you sound good ❤️

Jacky Friedman

He does the same for me to. When I have a headache I put on either Rains of Castemere or I See Fire from my playlist, put on my sleep headphones, lay down and not long later I don't have a headache anymore. Then I fall asleep. Several hours later I wake up to Geoff singing to me 🎶.

doug muchow

Wo3! A great tribute from a GREAT bass singer to another! I don’t know how you find the time to do all this music and to perform each one flawlessly!

Bonnie Wells

JD Sumner was awesome! You're the only one (bass) that can do him justice. You're absolutely great! Thanks, Geoff!

Emily Houk

Grew up with my dad who sang bass in a gospel quartet....JD Sumner was one of his inspirations and he would always try to match pitch. Thank you for this as it's the one I heard most often!

Hunter

Underwhelming? Pfft! Would you listen to this guy? He’s self-deprecating himself again.

Debs Badger

Nicely done, G! I think you more than did JD justice. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Suzy Bailey

Oh please Geoff! The only thing that could remotely be considered 'underwhelming' was how short this little nugget was. That long slide into the depths at the end... glorious! 💜

Crisstina Joubert

That brought back memories, thank you! Brilliant, as always!

ObscureReferenceWoman

JD is impressive, true, but there's nothing underwhelming about you. More, please!!! He would be proud of you. And you are better looking, IMHO. Love it! 💕

Tim Coyle

It took me a couple minutes. He sang with Bill Gaither!

Ashley Evers

"Be underwhelmed" he says, while deliberately leaning in to stare into the depths of our souls.

Lexy Wolfe (aka Pam)

If only I could be as underwhelming as you as a writer, my dear Geoff.

Shirley B Karr

Fabulous! How fun. Really hoping you'll cover another JD/Elvis collaboration, just a better known hit so more people find it. I listen to Way Down at least once a week.

Karin Wolf

Never heard of Mr. Sumner before. Searched him, found him, listened to that song... great singing with lots of fun doing it! Does anyone know another singer quite the same...?!? 🥳🙃😊

Diane Holland

For a spontaneous cover, I enjoyed it. I have never heard of JD Sumner. It would be interesting to hear you sing a song of his. Please remember this: I wish I had your talent, drive, technique, and looks. Even when you do something like this, it is still amazing!

Alex Walker

YOU just melted my brain with this, so fantastic! Thank you for this captivating gem! I love it! 🔥 And now ... when's the whole video coming up?? 😍

Jona

What a treat!! Thank you. When will we see the full version? 😊

Erma Payne

There is nothing underwhelming about you! Thank you for handing us one treat after another!

Barbara Binney

I see none of this "underwhelmingness" of which you speak. All I see (and hear) is awesomeness.

Lori Templeman

Underwhelming? Is it opposite day in the Castellucci house?

Tracie Schlaak

No way is this underwhelming, Geoff. It's very pretty. Are we going to see a full version?

Grace Files

Geoff this is not underwhelming at all, it is astonishing. Your voice just gives me the warmest and happiest feelings. Thank you for this, it made my day❤️

Jay Fritz

I'm constantly overwhelmed by your underwhelmingness. I think we need to do more research into just the correct amount of "whelm" we need. I'm sure there's like an RDA for it or something. This is great, like always, Geoff.

Tara Congo

Thanks Geoff, that was awesome!! I love how much fun you had with it 😁

Shirley B Karr

Last year Geoff did a cover of an Elvis and JD Sumner song, Way Down. Highly recommend it! JD and his group was the warmup act and backing vocals for Elvis on tour in the 70s.

Biene

How I love when you don't suppress your vibrato! Let's hear more of that.

Sarah Borzelli

Wow that's so beautiful! I like to hear and see you sing something you love so much! 😍 That's a very special treat - thank you!

Maryse B

Thank you for that little sweetness, Geoff. Always nice to hear you sing, no matter what song you sing and how you sing it. Because it always ends up looking like you and that’s what makes it always (in my opinion) good.

Janet McAndrew

Looks like you were having fun playing around with this!

Ruth Feiertag

Yes; we all keep coming back to be underwhelmed. Silly Geoff. I did listen to a few of JD Summers songs on YouTube first. He does have a smooth, mellow voice, but I find yours moving and resonant with a blend of intelligence and and passion that is rare. I don't know enough about singing to discuss it with the proper terminology, so my vague descriptors are the best I can offer. But I'm hooked.

Melissa Struxness

JD Sumner was with Elvis for a long time. Listen to him sing with Elvis on Hiw Great Though Art with his group JD Sumner and the Stamps. Amazing.

Natalie Thompson

I love your humility, but underwhelming is the last word I would ever use to describe you, or your voice. Yes JD Sumner could take it to the sub-basement but I find your range and the warmth and timber that you carry even at the low end to be phenomenal.

Terry Ford

What a nice tribute and for a song all us low basses sing to see if we have the chops. I grew up in JD's hometown of Lakeland, FL. This song was the first JD Sumner song I remember hearing as a kid in the early 70s. It was a fun fact to learn that Richard Sterban sang bass with JD and the Stamps Quartet in '70-72 before joining the Oak Ridge Boys. Good stuff, Geoff!

Alyssa Daniels

Remind me again how we’re supposed to be underwhelmed by you casually sliding from chest to subs? 😂

Emma Grey

Oooh I must remember this the next time I have a migraine!

Cynthia Ross

Underwhelming….yeah. That’s why a professional bass opera singer refers to you as “the king of basses”. 🙄 I’ve listed to JD. My Mom’s parents listed to nothing but gospel. He’s extremely good. He gets extremely low. But there’s more to hear in a voice than hitting a note. It’s the Sinatra vs. Crosby argument all over again. And since you - and many here - are too dang young to know what that was about… Sinatra was technically brilliant. Crosby fans frequently found his sound a bit….sterile. Or even cold. (His rep as a mafia boy didn’t help him come off as cuddly either.) Crosby didn’t have the range Sinatra did, or the power. (Fun fact: he nearly destroyed his voice as a young man in his 20’s. He went a year without talking to try to save it. When he started singing again, his upper register was gone. The Crosby everyone knows from the song “White Christmas” was running on about half the range he started with) And…Bing could be a little pitchy. He started singing as belting with the big bands in jazz clubs before they had mics (which is how he hurt himself) and was used to being a bit more freeform than the very precise Sinatra. What he DID have was a gift for giving people all kinds of feels, and a voice so warm that quilts got jealous. Which was better? 🤷‍♀️ My point is: you and JD are both bass singers. But you’re still offering a very different experience. You have all of Crosby’s warmth and ability to make us feel the feels, and all of Sinatra’s precision. And you go for the difficult stuff. Fancy runs and such that few bass singers try. JD, at least what I’ve heard, did simpler vocals and I never heard him go higher like you do. Lots of power, lots of bass, and a real feeling of conviction. But I never heard him sound warm and cozy. I never heard him hit a riff that made me freeze solid in awe with a spoonful of ice cream halfway to my mouth. Comparing the two of you is as useless as comparing Sinatra and Crosby. Your gifts are different. So….No. He’s not better than you. He’s different than you. There may be things he does you wish you did better, but I promise you he’d hear you doing things he’d wish he could do. IMO, you’re the better performer because you serve up the things I value most in music: fun and feels. You can change my mood. JD never did. I enjoy listening to him, but he does nothing to stop me from crying or otherwise elevate me out of a bad head place. You do. That’s a gift I don’t think can be learned. We are here, paying out our money, because we dig the jive you’re laying down. Period. (lol, I think about Sinatra and try to turn into Sammy) Now how bout you quit insulting our tastes by implying you are anything less than awesome, m’kay? 🥰🥰

Janet Towles

Don’t you talk like that about our favorite singer! 😜 Loved the slide to subs, that SLAYS.

Maria Stoycheva

that was confusingly the cutest live you've uploaded so far :D also, I listened to the 'original' before coming here and I still liked your better. comes to show how our modern tastes have changed, I guess :)

Leisa S

Never underwhelmed by anything you do. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Amanda Yarbro

Your so humble. You never underwhelm!

Agnes EvaR

Thank you, Geoff! That was awesome!

Scott Bean

Thank you Geoff, the gift is ever appreciated.

Christine Stromberg

I did as you suggested and listened to the original. Frankly I prefer your smooth tone to his gravelly one. So you are far more likely to melt my mind than he would, however low he can go. I know you're very self-depracating and it bugs me at times, maybe because I can identify with that., but I hope that one day you'll realise just how special you are.

Mary Benno

You bring such a smile to my face. I love these personal moments. Thank you for being real. I know we remind you all the time how wonderfully special you are, but you have truly touched our hearts. Love you bunches!

R. W. Hansen

I love these little snippets of songs. They always put a smile on my face. Thanks so much for sharing them!

Lois McCray

I've heard Tim Storms sing this. Will look up JD Sumner. You dusting off old tunes gives me goosebumps.

Alex Sage

underwhelming????? Underwhelming my ass! I’ve never heard anything from you that could EVER touch there. EVERRRRR.

Diane Holland

Thank you for the information 😀

Cupcake aka Toni

Feel free to "underwhelm" us like this any time the mood strikes you. We are more than happy to bear witness to your warm, silky, smooth, charming, modest, and oh-so-talented "underwhelmingness" 24/7. Thanks, Geoff, for the Sumner-flavored ear candy!

Amanda Hovendon

Wow. Well said! 👏👏👏😀😀😀

Mikki Fullerton

Lets see, how can I describe the difference between JD and you? I love hearing JD sing this song once every few months. I'd like your quick live studio performance in my everyday playlists... mp3 please? Underwhelming... 🙄 Your own Patreon is hardly the place to search for critics, but I'm sure you could find a few somewhere on the rest of the internet. And then if you start to listen to the haters too closely, you just come back here and we'll build you back up again. Keep singing, please, it is a blessing to the ears!

SunnyOutlook

Very nice! Love these unexpected little serenades.

Barazion

I'd love to hear your cover James Taylor's 'that lonesome road. Most of it is Acapella already.

Silv E

JD Sumner did indeed melt my mind, but this melts my heart and makes me somehow feel like all is right with the universe.
