Four years since we covered Super Mario Odyssey, and 35 years after its release, it's time for Super Mario Land to get the Cane and Rinse podcast treatment. Leon, Chris Worthington, James and Leah raid the cupboards in search of enough batteries to beat the platforming plumber's first portable outing. Which isn't many batteries. Because the game is really short. As usual we also get memories and opinions shared by a number of the game's 18 million plus players as we await Super Mario Land's arrival on the Nintendo Switch.

Outside of cutscenes, FF7R is an incredible podcast game haha

I love it when an episode is longer than the game

Fab episode. This was not only my first Mario game but also my first Nintendo game. Such magical memories.

If I may interject re. the "belt, leather belt" controversy. It actually has its origins in an old YouTube series called Ventrillo Harassment in which somebody would invade an unsuspecting RPG guild's ventrilo room and grief them with voice clips of Duke Nukem and the like. In this particular episode, somebody was recorded enthusiastically gushing about his leather belt drop in the game which was then remixed into various things including Mario Land's 1-1 music, which has apparently become quite a niche reference. I hope this has somewhat cleared this up.

Wow, I have an incredibly similar wasp story. I found this game at our local tennis club in the same week I got stung by dozen of wasps while playing in the bushes surrounding the club. So I share an SML/insect trauma connection with James.
