Hey, wonderful Patreon supporters. We know that not everyone listens to every single show/podcast/issue that we put out and that's OK.We'd like to know though, is that more often because you have no interest in the game in question, or is it more often that you want to play the game but don't want it spoiled? We do not, and have never, expected anyone to play along with every single show. But it could be useful for us to know this (13 years down the line) to potentially make some small adjustments to how we schedule, as well as what we cover and in what way.

NB: This is specifically about the numbered issues covering videogames, nothing to do with the Patreon exclusive monthly pod with Jay and Leon.

Also time is a factor, I love the podcast but just have to prioritise sometimes

Cormoran Strike

Mostly it’s when it’s a game I’m not interested in and will never ever play (well I’m pretty sure I won’t play anyway).

Jesse nelson

I don’t listen sometime for spoilers but 99% of the time I listen to every episode as they come out.

Yogi B.

The first option. Although that said, when an episode covers multiple games in a series I'm likely to listen to it even if I don't have an interest in particular entries in that series.

Jesse nelson

I’ll add I listen to stuff I’ve never heard of or wasn’t interested in before hoping I’ll be inspired to play them. It’s happened more than once that I’ve gone back and played them. Bioshock Infinite is an example. I hate that game at release but after the cast I went back and enjoyed my time with it.

Peter McPhillips

Sorry my vote of both is probably not very helpful, but I would say it's usually because I don't know or care about the game and the occasional avoiding of spoilers otherwise

Andrew Neyland

When I first found Cane and Rinse, after the podcast had been running for 200+ episodes, I skipped podcasts about games I didn’t have any interest in. After having caught up to the podcast, I listen less frequently so as to always have a couple episodes to available. Now I skip episodes if they’re games I think I’ll play in the next year or so and want to form my own opinion of before listening to the crew talk about it. Thanks for all y’all do!

Alex79

I listen to most shows. There have been shows where I really have zero interest in the game that I've skipped, and often I will save a show until I've played the game if it's a game I know I want to play at some point but at the same time I often relisten to shows when I replay games too.

TerrestrialExtra

Option 5. Listen to every episode regardless

Trent Gleason

Naturally, the show is largely book-club style so having finished the game that’s being discussed is expected from ya’ll in terms of how spoilers are handled. Sometimes I’ve listened to eps of games I haven’t played (but plan on playing) like Xenoblade Chronicles and slightly regret it. Other games I wouldn’t care as much on being spoiled.

Peter McPhillips

Disregard, I thought it was multiple choice, voted for don't know/care about the game 😅

Chris Young

If I don't know it, I usually won't listen. I couldn't care less about spoilers.

Matt Nicolaidis

I stopped listening for a couple reasons... Biggest is that I feel way too much time is spent discussing the minutae of mechanics, and not nearly enough on story and narrative stuff. This really makes my eyes glaze over, especially when covering games where the story is the most important part of the game. I also feel like, over the past few seasons, input from the forum and Patreon has taken less and less priority, while some hosts have a really bad tendency to drone on and on about stuff that doesn't feel relevant or interesting to discussion of the game itself. Cliff Notes: More listener feedback, more focus on story and narrative, less tangents.

Anthony Cameron

Tbh I only listen to probably six or seven regular shows per year (plus most specials and the monthly patreon show). I wouldn't listen to a show about a game I've not played or I'm not interested in. But I don't subscribe to Patreon to listen to every show, I subscribe because I want to support a show and a team that I have enjoyed for years.

Quiet Paul

I would add time on top of lack of interest in the chosen games. These days I do struggle for time but if there’s a game I’m very interested in, I may listen to it over the course of a week or so.

melonhouse

I listen to every episode, even games I am not familiar with or have no interest in. The only time I don’t listen is when the game has a story that I feel could be spoiled AND I may get to the game somewhat soon.

Cane and Rinse

This poll was more aimed at those who listen selectively rather than former listeners. Thanks for the feedback anyway. Just to reassure you, we haven't reduced focus on community correspondence in the slightest. If there are shows where feedback less prominent it's because we haven't received as much. As regards to discussing mechanics over story, that probably isn't going to change.

Matt Nicolaidis

I do still listen for games that really pique my interest. But I used to listen to every single episode.

wookieclaw

I have several episodes saved for when I complete the game (currently am playing Majora’s Mask for eg) and then really look forward to listening to the relevant episode. I listen to episodes of my fave games several times, they’re so detailed it’s great!

Michael Williams

Listen to every episode when either of the following criteria is met: 1) I'm interested in the game; 2) Leon is presenting

CiaranDC

I only listen to episodes about games I’ve completed (and I haven’t got the time anymore to play along with the podcast!). I do have a big pile of saved episodes I listen to when I complete a game on my to do list, and it’s amazing to hear your thoughts as soon as I’ve completed one.

West Creekside

About 80% of the time option A, 20% option B.

Witch

my work situation has changed so I no longer listen to any podcast as often as I used to. in addition, I honestly haven't looked into where to listen to my subscribed podcasts now that google podcasts is gone.

Dónal

Basically the same answer I was about to type.

Jill Sandwich

I'm an outlier but I generally only listen to old episodes, once I've beaten the game (my backlog is astronomical). Even if a new episode drops for a game I've played before, I run the risk of wanting to play it again once I've heard the episode, if it's been awhile. So I might wait until I get round to replaying it. I will listen to Dragon Age: Inquisition when that drops, though. Getting nicely hyped for Veilguard!

Dónal

I may not always listen when the episodes are new, but I love hitting that search button on the archives and finding an episode when I finish a game.

Jon Solomon

More often than not it's because I'm not interested in the game itself. I don't usually avoid shows due to spoilers, but that happens on rare occasion. The Elden Ring show finally convinced me to get off my butt and make my peace with the game before listening to your show on it, after bouncing off of it hard the first time I played it. Been listening for many years now and still love hearing your discussions, but I don't listen to all of them as hardcore on release as I used to. Another sort of odd factor is I used to drive and bus a lot for my commute; due to job changes, I have a shorter commute and less time to fill with podcasts overall.

Veronica Jane

It's kind of an even split that I don't listen because it's a game I'm not interested in (generally racing for fighting games. They're just ot my genres) or it's a game where I know spoilers will matter to me (Disco Elysium, The Witcher 3 DLC, etc).

NyxFontana

Spoilers for me, If it’s a game I know I’ll enjoy but am unable to get around to in time for the show then I’ll put that episode on hold till I’ve put time into the game. Baldurs gate 3 for example I’ll listen to that episode next year since I haven’t been in a good frame of mind this year for 80 hr games. Usually I like listening to each episode though even if I’m not interested in the game because I like the history aspect and hearing how you guys felt playing it.

Ashton Herrmann

I listen to 99% of the episodes regardless of whether I've played the game or not. I'll occasionally skip one if it's a game I'm actively playing or intending to play, and I'm worried about spoilers, but I almost always swing back around to it.

Adam Capone

Yeah this subject is something I have thought about too, this kind of show can’t compete with a standard show that talks about the latest games each week. I hate to say that because what this show does is so special and important. For me it’s always listening to shows based on games I have played, sometimes I play an oldie I missed and then search for it on the C&R database.

Veronica Jane

I would also say time is a factor. A Cane and Rinse (especially a Patreon cut) can easily to two hours long which is the equivalent of four episodes of most other podcasts I listen to, so I'll often save CaR for when I'm caught up on other shows.

Joseph Raphael Grey

I don’t intentionally skip any shows, I listen if I’ve played the game or not and often enjoy listening to the shows about games I’d never choose to play. When life overtakes my time the episodes I put on the maybe later pile will be based on the game seeming less interesting than the other options. Spoilers wouldn’t be a factor for me.

RiffMason

Massively spoilers for me. You pick so many modern games that have a much heavier emphasis on story and it unfortunately makes what I consider to be an otherwise brilliant podcast with great personalities and really thoughtful perspectives basically unlistenable for me. If you picked more indie and arcade games with less emphasis on story this could probably be my favourite podcast. That makes it a massive shame that a podcast I think basically gets everything else right is something I don’t even check in to listen anymore, I’ve listened to lots of your episodes otherwise though in the past. You’ve got to consider that the people answering the poll are your actual listeners too, there’ll be loads of people who don’t listen for this reason who won’t even be answering the poll. A lot of these games you cover are games heavily rooted in story and 20+ hours in length, it’s an unrealistic expectation to think an adult audience with kids, jobs and so on is going to try and keep up with these massive games you play in order to avoid spoilers or that they’re going to be happy to hear spoilers of a game they’d otherwise actually want to play. I’d still like to see those games but 20 hour story based game followed by subsequent 20 hours story based game is just a really crap schedule to try and keep up with and there’s too much of it, I say this as someone who otherwise has a huge amount of respect for this podcast too. A bunch of middling games are covered too, Metroid other M before covering the mighty Rez, What about Panzer Dragoon Lumines, Pitfall, have theme hospital and lemmings been covered? some random but great examples off the top of my head I’d love to see a lot more experimental games covered too.

SludgeWizard

I listen to every “normal” episode, but often skip the Monthly Patreon episodes. We just have opposite tastes in what we watch, no worries.

Steve Norman

I very rarely don’t listen - you could count the times I haven’t over the last 13 years on one hand! Guardians of the Galaxy this week was one though… There are just some things I can’t face hearing about for two hours!

Cane and Rinse

We certainly don't expect any one person to play along with or have an interest in every game we cover. That was never realistic, we're just trying to gauge what the breakdown of reasons is so that perhaps some considerations could be made.

Cane and Rinse

That's absolutely fine, although we do talk about a fairly eclectic mix of films. We watch all sorts, just like with the games we cover.

Alexander Pegram

The first thing I do when I finish a game is search to see if you all covered it. I unfortunately can't game as much these days

James

I got burnt out on podcasts in general and unfortunately left a huge backlog to catch up on. I am selectively going through them, and prioritise new podcasts when the game interests me, though I save it if I know I am going to be playing it soon. If I am unsure of the game, I put it off and will probably use it as background noise while I am doing things around the house.

John Gordon

A mixture of both for me but also not having time to listen to everything. I think the low monthly Patreon donation amount makes it easy to continue supporting the show even if I listen to only a few episodes in a year - it still feels like good value and something to encourage and say thanks for.

Mateusz Piaskiewicz

I like to listen to podcasts about games I already know or heard about. When you talk about some old and not well known game from SNES era, it's hard for me to compare my experience with yours to better understand your point of view. Most of the episodes in season 13 were not known to me so I skipped most of them because I simply don't resonate with what you say about them. The only exception is when my podcast backlog is empty and I'm looking for some fillers. Then I'm trying the episodes about not known games but that feeling of detachment is there.

Anthony Cameron

As a counter to this - I'd much rather they cover way MORE 20hr story driven games. Those are the games I enjoy, play and love to listen to them cover. But there's only a handful of those types of games that C&R cover in a year.

Matt Parker

I'd like to add that I keep an eye on previously released episodes and sometimes an episode I didn't want to listen to, I'll feel in the mood for. I'll have played the game or I'll just think "Eh, I don't mind spoilers on this one anymore. It's been out years...".

Lewis Shaw

I think my listening is a bit chaotic. Sometimes it's because I don't have much affection for the game covered, sometimes it's because I'm saving it to listen to after I've played it, and often it's down to other fascinations I have with my podcast listening. I don't play as many games as I used to, so find myself listening to gaming-related podcasts as much. C&R is still a steady go-to though.

Cane and Rinse

They generally take us a lot longer to play of course, plus we have just as many fans of gameplay-first experiences among the team.

Alan Wallace

General feedback - I listen to every patreon monthly podcast as soona s they come out, I love this podcast, keep up the great work. For regular issues, because of the nature of the podcast I don't feel the need to consume it immediately. If it's covering a game I have a particular interest in, I will often listen close to release but if it's a game I'm not hugely interested in I will happily leave that podcast for months as they are pretty timeless. i do listen to loads but have a pretty health backlog of issues for long flights etc.

Charles G

It's all down to time constraints for me. I dip in and out and there have been plenty of games covered I haven't heard of. You had recently covered a fighter from Japan I believe from before the street fighter days and for whatever reason it started playing and I listened all the way through. I still found it really interesting. Japanese exclusive titles are not something I try to listen to but your coverage of games is good enough to keep me listening for 2 hours. You're doing something right there in my book 👍

Alexandr0s

This year there have been more games covered that I am personally not interested in hearing about. I generally have a Nintendo + Sony bias in which games I’m interested in. That said, keep doing what you’re doing! As long as you have a good mix of games, there seems to be something for everyone.

Marcus

sometimes I will avoid an episode if I haven't played the game (just listened to the SOMA episode 7 years later) but usually it is because I have no interest in the game. will still listen to episodes of games I'm interested but don't have the time/money to play (which is becoming more and more common)

Branford Hubbard

Hey there, long time no write because my life has fallen apart(we're even approaching the anniversary to me getting robbed, pepper sprayed, and losing my apartment, losing my job; to be clear I'm ok). I tend to listen to most everything, the only time i DONT listen to a show is when i know i'm going to play it. Last time this was with Persona 5. I will admit there was a VERY dry interview from a decade ago I probably would've skipped if I didn't just need podcasts to pass the time in mind-numbing jobs. I'd listen to Sound of play if that were still going. Sadly, I don't really listen to sausage factory or playwrite, but as it seems i'm destined to dive deeper into games journalism, maybe I should consider it. But even still, y'all talk about some games I didn't know existed, and even some older games where in my head i say 'pshaw, what could be so interesting about pong?!?' and yet, your staff is able to draw parallels and tell history that in fact makes it VERY interesting. I'm actually curious if your strategy of covering 'older' games is paying off a bit, as quite a few of your games this year are being remade(Capcom Fighting Collection 2, silent hill 2 remake). I try to bring up the pod when i can for that very reason! I will admit I was gearing up for your Kingdom Hearts II show, but that didn't happen lol. Regardless, I'm a happy patreon member, and I don't regret being subscribed at all. PS: As someone who's in an adjacent space to you, you may want to consider somehow getting on Tiktok. As an old man, I recently got on there and i get views that dwarf all my other social media(I feel like twitter/youtube/etc. have algorithmed themselves so hard it's impossible to actually get views). It's a shame the US government has ordered tiktok to change, but before that happens, it's good news for us i suppose

Cane and Rinse

We are really sorry to hear about your awful experience a year ago, Branford. That sounds incredibly traumatic and we hope that you are recovering as well as possible. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback.

Alfie Bamford

Cane & Rinse has for the past decade been a part of my going to sleep ritual (god knows what I will do when one day C&R finishes!). From a totally personal perspective, I like to listen to episodes where they cover a game I am already aquainted with, so I can zone out from my brain and the days stress, and just totally focus on the topic with a good sense of familiarity. Before I know it, I'm asleep. I can usually make an episode last all week like this, getting through 15-20 mins of it a night before drifting off. For this reason, I'm less interested in listening to game which I haven't played, and quite often games are covered which I have no interest in playing anyway. Occasionally there's a game covered which I want to avoid spoilers although this situation is more of a rarity. As a gamer of over thirty years and with a fairly refined taste in the type of games I like to play, I would never expect a podcast such as Cane & Rinse to be able to cater to me with its game choice every week anyway. As a Patreon supporter, if I listen to even half of the incredible content you produce, it's money well spent in my eyes.

Alfie Bamford

I'm actually in the same boat, it does feel as if there's been a lot more obscure, leftfield picks this year, but I have no idea what the general listener is looking for so I have been hesitant to mention in case it came across biased. I'm definitely there with the Nintendo & Sony bias too. My favourite picks are always the big obvious games, which I know have been talked about a thousand times on other podcasts, but the C&R team just do it better so I'm always keen to hear their take.

wez foster

I have marked down as not wanting to hear spoilers for episodes I miss (still playing persona 5!) but i also use the podcast to clear games off my backlog or get me to play games I probably would never get round to playing or games I never got round to finishing, looking at you elden ring!

Richard

I listen to every episode pretty religiously (usually on Spotify rather than the Patreon app), even when it is about a game I have no specific interest in. The only time I refrain if it is something that I haven’t played and plan to in the future.

Reuben Cornell

I'll only listen if it's a game I have no intention ever of playing, or if I've completed it.

T-BirD

I typically don't listen if it's a story-heavy game I intend to play in the forseeable future. Then I will try to save those episodes for when I have finished that specific game. So far, I have not found an episode about anything I have absolutely zero interest in. Often I will use an episode to get hyped up to play something (like Belmont's Revenge recently) - if I will then finish that game doesn't matter, but that show may have pushed me to play something I may not have otherwise.

Frank Kuipers

I only listen to the shows of the games that I have played or care about. Only on rare occasion will I not listen to a show due to spoilers for a game I eventually want to play but probably won't for a very long time. Every year I'm excitedly waiting for the list for the next volume, and this years volume was really not for me, unfortunately. Only a handful of shows. I don't mind this, though. So I barely listened to you guys this year, but just this week I have been coming back, checking out the few shows for me, and relistened to some older shows.

Stephen

Don’t know how I missed this (and it’s obviously a bit late), but I listen to every episode as they come. I can be slow to keep up sometimes, but that’s more around my listening habits as opposed to wanting to avoid a specific podcast. As a late joiner to Cane & Rinse listening party, I have since mid 2023 been making my way through every episode of the show. If anything, Cane and Rinse is the best value content I consume and have found it immensely enjoyable. As an aside, I think removing spoiler based discussions would hurt the show. I think they are necessary for the format to ensure you cover not only the story in a game, but also mechanics and levels. I also think it would kill the opportunity to cover adventure games like Life is Strange and Norco.

Veronica Jane

I'm back to this months later to say that I just listened to the Persona 5 episode several years later. I think of Cane and Rinse as a timeless bookclub discussion that supplements my play experiences (as soon as I knew I was enjoying Persona 5 my first thought was "I can't wait to hear the C+R about this") and it doesn't matter if I'm listening to it the week an episode drops or a decade later, it's still going to be the same quality of discussion.
