By the year 2000 the popularity of the traditional point and click adventure was waning. However, Lucasfilm felt there was enough left in the well for one last jaunt to hang with the pirates of the Caribbean. Leon, Ryan and Tony - along with contributors from the listenership - wrestle with the keyboard-based tank controls, moon-logic puzzles and Monkey Kombat in their attempts to Escape from Monkey Island.Music featured in this issue:1. Cool, been looking forward to this one! I think at least one panel member really enjoyed the game, judging from Blue Sky posts! 😆 EDIT: The game might be dreadful but aaaaaah, that opening music 😘👌 EDIT 2: Ah ha, the PS2 port wasn't the first console release of a Monkey Island game - the original game released for Mega CD!

Is it that bad? I've been defending this game for what feels like forever. It's certainly not my favourite MI game, but I still enjoyed it and go back to it pretty regularly.

In all honesty, I only ever played it once, when it first came out. I was a huge fan of the first three and remember being really disappointed with this, hated the controls, the graphics and the writing. It may well not be as bad as I remember, I ought to give it another shot some day. I wasn't a huge fan of any of those classically 2D point and click games going 3D. Broken Sword 3, Discworld Noir, I didn't even like Grim Fandango much (but don't tell anyone).

Cane and Rinse

True. This was the first one developed with a console version in mind though.

Ah, I did have a PC big box version of that one (which if memory serves young me had picked up at the flea market?). I still remember how on the back it was written “The first game ALL IN 3D 'small' that cures scurvy '/small'. By that point I had played through Fate of Atlantis and Full Throttle, and although I had not played any of the previous Monkey Island, I was probably aware of the venerable point & click series. I don’t remember much of it, although watching some playthroughs jogged my memory a bit. I went as far as the swamp − most probably with copious servings of walkthrough − but I don’t think I enjoyed my time very much. That said, all these years later, I still sometimes refer to lid-covered plastic containers as “StupeurWare” (“Scupperware” in OV) and occasionally quote the bait-shop monologue of how “bait goes bad”. No-one seems to ever get the reference though 🤷

(Rhahaha tried to do some 'clever' formatting/editing and Patreon swallowed my comment… >_< Can you easily get it back somehow? Otherwise I’ll try to retype tomorrow)

As with a lot of people, this was my entry into the series as I only got my first PC a year after it came out. I remember enjoying it and having no idea how I actually finished it as I don't remember us having much internet back then and I'm not that clever. I had no idea I was playing the "bad" game, but once I caught up with the early entries of the series years later I can see it's a poor follow up to the witty and interesting adventures that came before it. While flawed, Escape was my entry into a genre that remains a big favourite of mine to this day; so it gets points for that.
