Between an early showing and its release, transforming powerboats became personal watercraft (i.e. jet skis) and Nintendo had itself a massively upgraded sequel to US only niche Game Boy title, Wave Race. Leon, Brian, Darren, Michiel and community contributors recall just what a splash Wave Race 64 made with its debut, and how Nintendo Software Technologies followed up with the GameCube launch title Wave Race: Blue Storm, a few years later.

To me it always felt like Wave Race 64, Excitebike 64 and 1080 were examples of the philosophy that Nintendo brought into the 3D era of expecting players to completely master the use of the analog stick, this being the new control method of 3D gaming. I've never quite felt that games pushed this same level of mastery in the eras since. That being said, I prefer Blue Storm to Wave Race 64, just because it looks incredible. I couldn't believe the jump from N64 to Gamecube graphics, personally having felt that the N64 generation was a disappointment after the great art of the 16 bit era. It felt like the Gamecube era made good on the promise of 3D graphics, and we'll certainly never see a jump like that again. Personally, I would have been perfectly happy for graphics to have stayed at that level of fidelity forever. I still think Blue Storm looks incredible to this day, and I still play it regularly.

Glad I'm not alone in my love for Blue Storm. "Soulless" they say. Pah!

Yeah I always thought it was full of soul, but I guess it is subjective. We’re right though!

Thank you so much for this episode. Wave Race 64 is one of my all time favourite games. I have such deep affection for it. Thoroughly loved this episode and will listen to it again many times. Probably while playing Wave Race.

More GameCube love here! It was my first entry in the series and I feel exactly the same way most of you did about the 64 version. I think the magic (or the soul) with this has an awful lot to do with where you came in.
