Great show. It was nice to hear everyone speak so highly of this game and explaining why technically it is such a brilliant game. The weekend before this dropped on the Patreon feed I was at my mum's for the weekend to sort through my old stuff. I stumbled across my Saturn collection and while testing out the games to see if they still work, I gave Sega Rally a spin. I'm so happy that my memories of this game weren't just rose-tinted nostalgia as my "one go" turned into a few glorious hours as I made incremental gains, but never reached that final finish line. It was two seconds away on my last run, but life stuff meant I couldn't continue. One thing I really appreciated, but had completely forgotten about, was the lack of a map, which made learning the tracks and relying on the navigation incredibly vital. I do still own the steering wheel, but I struggled to get a decent control of the car. Maybe next time I'll spend another afternoon or two getting to grips with it and not only finish, but get first. I also gave Daytona a try too. The Saturn version has aged terribly and wasn't fun. The handling was boxy and rigid in a way that made me feel like I didn't have much control at all. It only served to highlight just how great the home conversion of Sega Rally is.

Beep beep! Been looking forward to this one, lots of memories of the arcade game and playing it on the Saturn years later. Not sure there's an arcade racer I've ever enjoyed more (as in, actual arcade I mean).

Awesome podcast! Made me nostalgic for a game I've played for maybe a total of 2 hours. Would love it to come to switch so I can sink my teeth into the game

Really fortunate that you guys brought to light that Hitler was behind the code for this, shame on SEGA for hiding this from us smh

Amazing podcast! I'm currently working on a remake of Sega Rally, updated with today's standard graphics, in Unreal Engine 5. It's called "Over Jump" and you can find it on social media as @overjumprally While I'm redoing the graphics, I want to keep the same gameplay as the original.

What a fantastic project! We wish you the very best with it.

Oh, Kenneth Ibrahim is not a pseudonym, it's a real person! He was working at SoJ at the time as CG artist and he also made the voice-over. And "maybe" is a common word used by co-pilots in rally because they use the same notes for different type of cars so they might not have the same specs and speed when approaching a bump or jump (or corner).

I can recommend Sega Rally Revo on the PSP if anyone is jonesing for a fix after listening to this show. It's heaps of fun!

A wonderful podcast on an amazing game. Unfortunately we didn’t have many arcades here in Germany in my youth - arcades are associated in Germany mostly with gambling which is highly restricted and thus you could not enter an “arcade” (gambling venue) under 18. On top of it those places had the bad flavour of something shady and looked like belonging in a red light district - where they were often located to be true - “welcoming” facades with blocked windows - looked dangerous to go in… Nonetheless I got to know the Sega Rally arcade machine and remember fondly how great the game was in all aspects as Leon mentioned. When I think of the game the first thing that comes to my mind are BRIGHT colours. Such a striking design that communicates pure joy that holds up to this day.
