In recognition of its 20th birthday, we recall the life, library and legacy of Nintendo's noisy baby, the GameCube. Leon, Brian, Darren, Michiel and community correspondents thumb giant green buttons, pop toilet lids and clasp pencil microphones in honour of the little purple (other colours also available) box of delights. This console special edited by Jay Taylor

You do spoil us 🥰 can't wait to listen to this!

The Pensky File

great looking console, terrible controller. imo.

You spelled brilliant wrong! It was a fantastic controller, and such a ridiculously huge improvement over the N64 pad. I reckon it might be top 5 of all time material. (However, I respect your crazy opinion which you are totally entitled to 😆)

I had no idea about the alternate start-up sounds. Very slick.

Fascinating listen. I never owned one of these, the closest I got was almost buying one from a car boot sale for £40, but deciding I already had enough games on my current consoles to get through. The price discussion was interesting. For me the low price gave it the aura of a budget console, sort of what the Master System was to the Mega Drive; so, despite being definitely wrong, that's the image I had of the Gamecube. It sounds like I missed out on a lot of great games with my snobby attitude.

Excellent episode as usual. The Cube certainly holds a special place in my heart, and still gets played to this day. What I really want to say though is thank you to Leon for hosting the show for such a long time and for being, in my opinion, the finest host in all of podcasting.

Loved the Gamecube and loved this episode just as much. Actually had the Keyboard controller and internet adapter for PSO. Only to discover how bad the internet was in rural Ireland. That collective "No" after Skies of Arcadia wounded me however. One of the Dreamcast/Gamecube's finest titles.

Really liked listening to this one! Great to hear the perspectives of those who were there back in the day. I was a latecomer to the console and had a rockier road to embracing it. I picked up a GameCube only a few years back to play some of the games I had missed from the generation, but didn’t click with it at first. I only had an HDTV and felt that the visuals didn’t look quite like I wanted. I didn’t seem to ever be able to make the colors come through as brightly as I wanted—e.g., white clouds in Wind Waker always looked slightly gray, and the whole image being darker in general than I was comfortable with. I bounced off Mario Sunshine and decided to sell Wind Waker in favor of getting the WiiU version with quality of life improvements. I was finally able to get my hands on Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door and a few other first party exclusives, and for kicks I bought a HDMI adapter and mClassic upscaler gadget to smooth out the jaggies to make up for my lack of a CRT. I enjoy the GameCube now, especially the controller. I especially love the tactile triggers. One question: I have a copy of Four Swords Adventures that seems to lag for a second every minute or so, like a PC game when RAM is overtaxed. Is anyone else familiar with this behavior on GameCube games, and how I might address it?
