I think auteur is a more fitting description of Kojima than “genius”. It’s kind of fitting that he seems to be such good friends with director Winding-Refn since they both have a knack for creating things that are beautiful to look at and sometimes great to engage in, while also creating things that have a lot of issues for one reason or another. I can’t say as I’ve really enjoyed a Kojima game in a long time, but I but I always admire his vision. I’ll give any game he makes a try at the very least, but if we’re going to debate supposed “geniuses” in gaming, he will likely not make my short list if I really think about it.

You could summarize a Kojima plot completely in wingdings and I’d get the same amount out of it. His games are fun, though.
