Five years ago we covered the first two distinct entries in Konami's Contra series of run and gun shmups. Now, on the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the alien wars, we regroup to battle Contra Spirits, aka Contra III: The Alien Wars, aka Super Probotector: Alien Rebels. Leon, Michiel and returning guest Ben Cartlidge of One Credit Classics flip into the future and drive back the hideous menaces - along, as usual, with contributions from the Cane and Rinse forum and Patreon communities.Music featured in this issue:1. This is one of the few Contra games I’ve never owned (until getting an SNES Classic and Contra Anniversary) and only played it a few times over the years. I’m not sure I have the patience to finally try to beat it these days, especially when I always find myself rather playing the original NES Contra or Hard Corps: Uprising. Still, I feel like around the time that came out, Konami was synonymous with some of the best games around, how the mighty have fallen unless you’re a big pachinko fan.

To those on the edge of their seat waiting for an answer, my favorite Contra is Contra: Hard Corps!

Off topic. Are old episodes disappearing from Spotify? Nr. 15 is the oldest. I wanted to listen to the battlefield show, but it is gone.

Sat listening in the McDonalds drive thru, I've just bought the Anniversary package for £3.99. Sounds like a piece of history for the price of a coffee! I'm sure there is a wolf with a gun for an arm?

BlueWeaselBreath

Yes, and they’ll keep disappearing as long as Joe Rogan is on there! 😜

Okay, you need three conditions to play this game (Contra 3) and fully enjoy it: 1- Patience. 2- Good gaming companion / partner. 3- Finishing the game on Normal difficulty in ONE sitting. I repeat, ONE sitting. I believe that this game was superseded by Gunstar Heroes. Otherwise this is one of the best launch games (i think) for super famicom.
