I played through the game on the Arcade Classics Collection using the Japanese version and don’t have much to say about the experience except for the graphical upgrade from the NES games. It made me reflect on my opinions of arcade games that were formed in the 90s as opposed to the 80s. When I think of arcade games I don’t think of them as graphical showcases, but as location specific video game opportunities. I’m at a pizza parlor and can play Mortal Kombat. The laundromat has a Toobin machine. The skate rink has a table arcade version of Super Mario Bros. In the mid to late 90s these games were outdated or concurrent to consoles and felt like something from the past and not a showcase of the future. So I appreciate seeing Haunted Castle with its graphical improvements over its NES brethren. It drives home that for many years the arcade experience far exceeded what was available at home and if you were a fan of Castlevania it would have been exciting to be able to see and play this souped up version at an arcade.
