Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive/Genesis and/or Master System/Game Gear versions) for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.

A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

Sonic 2 is a game I think is a huge step up from the original. Better playing better looking better music you name it. But it’s also still a 2D sonic game that I quit when it feels like the game is being frustratingly unfair, and it’s not a game I often revisit because of that.

Sonic 2sday arrived a couple of weeks late for my ninth birthday, so the logical option was to request it from Santa/ my parents for Christmas, just four weeks later. Let me tell you, four weeks is a long time when you're nine.  As such, when my friend told me his mum was renting it for him in early December, I jumped at the chance to sample it with him.  As we fired up the Mega Drive I recall experiencing a sensation of excitement crossed with guilt.  Would I be ruining my Christmas present by playing it early? The guilt quickly faded away as we made our way through Emerald Hill.  Sonic's animation was as smooth as butter and every zone had an earworm of a soundtrack that, to this day, still burrow their way into my consciousness.  I've no doubt someone on the panel will have mentioned that Casino Night theme.  The game was everything I wanted and more.  The unfortunate thing, was that the "more", in the form of Tails, was – at least initially – very unwanted. After blundering our way through to Robotnik at the end of Chemical Plant Zone, we came unstuck.  He was just too difficult for our nine-year-old skills.  We eventually discovered a very promising technique where, if we jumped to the top right of the screen just before he appeared, we could bounce on him and defeat him in a few seconds before he left the screen again.  The only issue, was that Tails kept jumping into Robotnik while Sonic was mid-bounce, the timing of which temporarily took away Robotnik's hitbox and resulted in Sonic repeatedly falling through to his doom.  We spent the entire evening restarting and re-dying on the same boss, and yelling all manner of unforgivable words towards Tails that should be nowhere near a nine-year-old's lexicon. I went home slightly relieved that we hadn’t made it too far through the game, but also concerned that this annoying sidekick was going to ruin my Christmas.  For fox sake, why did have to keep trying to be helpful?  When you're screaming at your support character with more desperate terror than you feel to any of the actual enemies, something has gone wrong somewhere. By the time Christmas arrived I had come to discover that, not only could you use the options menu to play the game with Sonic on his own, free of any hazardous help, but a second player could also actually control Tails.  My friend only had one control pad, so go easy on me for that oversight. With my brother and I taking turns to operate between keeping Tails on a leash and using him as a kamikaze pilot on difficult sections, we breezed through the game over the Christmas break.  As a young psychopath, I also cultivated a technique of tactically killing Tails when playing on my own so he was off screen for the more difficult sections.  This evolved into me routinely simply killing Tails for my own amusement, such as by pointing Sonic in a particular direction when on a moving platform, meaning Tails would leap without question to his demise.  So faithful.  So foolish. There was a good decade or so when I didn't play the game, ending when I purchased the Mega Drive Mini.  The first game I played?  Why, Sonic 2, of course.  And I'll be damned if I didn’t enter some fugue state and automatically gravitate towards controller 2 at the end of Chemical Plant Zone in order to temporarily euthanize the twin-tailed twit. Playing Sonic 2 over that Christmas period in 1992 remains one of my favourite gaming memories.
