Sonic 2 is 30 (thirty). Leon, Karl, Tony, guest Jamie Smith (Principal Game Designer at Sumo Digital) and community correspondents Spin Dash through both 8 and 16-bit versions of the first Sonic sequel. SEGA's US-based Technical Institute took the reins on the Mega Drive/Genesis, with Team Aspect following up Team Ancient's work on the Master System and Game Gear. Genesis/Megadrive was a pretty large blind spot for me until the past decade or so. While I have grown a love for Phantasy Star, the Shining series, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and various other system exclusives, Sonic is a series I just have never gotten on with. I don’t know what it is. I can appreciate the animation and some aspects of design. I don’t really find the whole fun to play. Am I missing something?

oh man I am happyt his one is getting rinsed This was my first real mega drive game When I was 4 I thought attract mode was the entire game so I just sat there watching it loop for days One day I grabbed the controller and realized I was controlling sonic and beat the first boss and history was made

Great episode. The Patreon October releases have all been top notch. Thanks to all. 👍

Just to weigh in on the final boss stage. This was notorious amongst my friends and family for being incredibly punishing. While it is an incredibly steep difficulty curve and was rage inducing, I wish the series tried the no-rings levels more often as the tendency in a Sonic game is just to not worry about attacks as long as you can retain at least one ring. This was the boss stage that taught a young me how to spot patterns and the importance of biding your time. Because of this I think I've only ever completed this game from start to finish (without cheats) only once in my life.

I remember this being released. I think it’s the first time I’d seen a game mentioned on TV news. Felt like a real big deal at the time.

I’ve never played much Sonic but I fancied trying this one after listening to the show and now I’ve finished it and had a fantastic time doing it! I’ve now moved on to Sonic CD and am looking forward to trying even more. Thank you!
