Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Metroid: Zero Mission for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

I had to think about it for a second, but I have only played through this game once. It should in theory overwrite the original. In all measurable ways it is the better game. But there is just something about the incredibly harsh edges of the original that have me going back to that more than this remake. Zero Mission is a great Metroidvania but I don't know that we will ever see another game as strange and alien as the original Metroid.

I return to Zero Mission every year without fail. I'd argue it all but reduces the original game to a curiosity for retro game fans, and it smoothes out some of the control issues from Super Metroid. It feels like an incredibly refined metroidvania experience, with little bloat. And to me, this game looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous. I love Metroid Dread and it looks shiny and impressive, but pixel art Metroid is stunning and in my opinion it never looked better than Zero Mission.

I was so excited for this game that I had my brother ship a copy to me from the US while I was living in Germany because I didn’t want to wait for the EU release two months later. It was worth it. Just thinking about it makes me want to dig out my cartridge and return to Zebes.

I recently finished Metroid Zero Mission on my Analogue pocket. I was looking forward to this one as it is one of the few Metroid games I haven’t played. It both delivered and disappointed me in equal measure. My biggest disappointment is with the games visual presentation. The change to a more ‘classic’ comic book aesthetic just felt a bit out of place for a Metroid game in my opinion. Not a huge deal if it was reserved for just the cut scenes but the majority of the backgrounds are drawn in this style which clash with the excellent pixel art of the foreground elements. One could argue this is to help readability of the player character and enemies, but for me the backgrounds were pretty uninspired and lacking any real detail. However, this is good ‘Metroid’ game. Samus controls well with a more agile move set and all your favourite power ups are present and correct. The updated music and sound design is well implemented and will have you tapping your feet along to those classic tunes. Although more linear in its design, the light hand holding has just enough wiggle room for players to explore and get lost (which I did). Amazingly, after all these years I didn’t know about the zero suit section so that was a nice surprise. Not my favourite Metroid game but if your a fan of the series I would recommend it, just don’t expect a classic. PS F**k the Shinespark puzzles 🤬

While many will place Super Metroid among the all-time great games, I rarely see Metroid Metroid: Zero Mission mentioned in these conversations. I suppose this can be chalked up to the fact that not many people played it -- it sold less than 1 million physical copies according to VGChartz and the only virtual console it's been on so far is Wii U. However, pound-for-pound, I'd put my money on Metroid: Zero Mission as one of the all-time greats. Not only does it have your typical Metroid vibe of being an always outnumbered, never outgunned bounty hunter in a series of biomes dripping withatmosphere, but it also has a streamlined campaign, revamped controls (including the ability to grab ledges) and incredible shinesparking puzzles that had me grinning ear-to-ear as I Metroid-crawled my way to 100% completion!
