The game that gave its name to an industry-changing engine (or was it the engine that gave the game its name?): Unreal. Before it spun off into mainly multiplayer arenas, Unreal started life as another echelon-defining PC fps. Leon, Chris O'Regan and Jon - along with community contributions - remember the game's undeniable late 90s 'wow' factor (for those who had a PC capable of running it), as well as seeing how a 2023 replay treats the gameplay.Music featured in this issue:1. Didn't really have much to say about this one but looking forward to listening. I remember buying the game, one of the first PC games I bought, at a computer fair in Birmingham. My friend recommended it because I'd enjoyed Half Life and even the guy at the stall who sold me the game said "this is the best game ever made". So naturally, I didn't really like it 😂

Never actually played Unreal, but did get into PC gaming around the time this came out. Enjoyed a shot of nostalgia when Chris mentioned the Voodoo cards. Great stuff, thanks folks.

Great to hear Jon back on the pod

Interesting show, I’d love to see a modern reimagining of unreal or quake in the same vein as Doom 2016, but that seems like a pipe dream now.

Interesting show - the Unreal franchise is one that passed me by, but fascinating hearing the teams opinions of the game. Particularly hearing the discussions on how game design has evolved in the intervening years. Jon is wonderful to have on the show! (As are Leon and Chris of course)
