Back on board the spooky train with the beloved action platform series, as we arrive in the 16-bit era and Super Castlevania IV. Leon, Leah, Michiel and community correspondents weigh in on this remake/'requel' of the original Akumajo Dracula. There's a lot of love for the soundtrack (except for prog/jazz-hating Leah) and Simon's all-new eight-way wiggly whip.Music featured in this issue:1. Prologue by Masanori Adachi/Taro Kudo2. Great show. I managed to play through almost the entire game before realising you could use the whip as a shield 🤦🏻

Sorry for not commenting sooner because this is my favourite game in one of my favourite game series, but I can address Leah’s question about how its cartoonish vibrancy was more widely received… The colour palette is pure Hammer (like a lot of the rest of the game), and no true horror nerd is ever going to complain about that! Great listen too. Thanks as always!

I really wanted to sit down and play through this again and leave a comment, but for various reasons didn't get around to it. Great discussion as always, agree with Leah that this one's soundtrack doesn't quite hit the mark for me. Jazz at a club is fun, whenever it's in Castlevania it feels out of place to me, but I respect that others may disagree.

A fabulous show about one of the true video game classics. I love the way you all discuss video games as an art form (which is what they have long deserved)- in an intellectual and informative way without being pompous and overarching. It’s very much what our pastime-deserves and it’s why you guys are worth a few pounds of my hard earned every month. Great stuff.👍

Question for Leon and Jay, can you finish this game in one sitting? Or at least an entire day?

Stephen

Wonderful listen. I picked up the Castlevania collection you guys first mentioned in the first episode on the series and I have been loving the experience of going through the franchise. Didn’t quite get this one done before this show, but based on the conversation, I’m looking forward to it.
