ETA: My voice should be slightly louder. Still working on getting better sound for these.

Okay, took all day, but got the Behind the Curtain done. Still finding our feet.

I think the next podcast isn't going to get done until Wednesday when I get back from my trip.

Thank you so much for this. It is so hard to explain to people that just learning the language in Japan is not enough. There is so much to learn. Please continue “whitesplaining”. I will definitely be listening.

Nice one, Terrie! The iceberg metaphor is so resonant. It likely explains my fixation on learning about the culture since there is so much more to learn! I feel like this discussion is a mature look/examination/critique of a place that gets the superficial cute yet weird label far too often. It always goes deeper and you have said so. Even though you unfolded many cautionary scenarios, this makes me inspired to keep on keepin' on. I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Thank you so much for listening, Calvin. We're still trying to find our groove, so I especially thank everyone sticking with it. Hoping to get better mics soon, too.

Thankyou for taking the time to make this. It is interesting, and I love the imagery of a cultural ice berg.

This was enjoyable. Thanks. These behind the scenes episodes are definitely a draw for me. So I appreciate you both being careful about whitesplaining or maybe more generally, culturesplaining. Having said that, I personally am interested not so much in either of you explaining Japanese culture but rather your particular experiences of it. Because you both have your own cultural background and it's really interesting how those engage, fit, evolve, etc. It kind of reminds me of my daughter's boyfriend who is English saying I have an accent. I said jokingly, if anyone here has an accent you do buddy. Cause in America, British people have accents. That's a fact. So I'm been too long but, please do keep making these. Maybe I'll have more specific ideas later but for now, I've talk too much as it is.

Jeffrey, have you been reading my mind? I was very literally talking to Richard last night about us discussing different New Year's traditions in Japan. Especially since he's from a more northern area than me and when we have lightly discussed them, I was like, Oh, we don't do that here!
