Hey hey, everyone,

I'm just checking in to say typhoon Hagibis is gone and everything is okay on my end. Unfortunately, not so for many other parts of Japan. All day long my phone was buzzing from the emergency services telling different areas to evacuate. Mostly everyone near rivers or mountains. Still checking in on friends and family.

There are two little things I wanted to share quickly before I'm out the door.

1) I found sarubobo dolls while on my trip (even with an English explanation) so they'll be in this month's envelopes.

2) At this very moment I'm heading out to do a talk and reading (from The Carp-Faced Boy) in Shizuoka. I'll meet and discuss various things (?) with Masao Higashi, who is making the trip from Tokyo just to meet me. Mind blown.

The reading is just a short bit from "The Spider Sweeper", but it's going to be fun because it'll be done in segments in English and Japanese. I'm getting Rich to come with me so he can record it. Our traveling mics (the crappy lavilliers that we used on the last Behind the Curtain) aren't very good. But I really want to get a decent recording of this so have set him to the task. Even with crappy mics, he'll figure out a way to make it sound better.

Then I can share it here with all of you (all tiers). The man who is reading in Japanese is a super good reader and I adore the translation (done by a friend's husband). If anyone wants to hear it for shits and giggles or better, if you're studying Japanese, it might be interesting to listen to. I guess there's going to be a guy playing live moody music, too.

Okay, I'm on the verge of being late and I still haven't brushed my teeth.

XO,

t
