I was invited to an interesting reading a while ago. The woman was famous for reading "Miminashi Hoichi" ("The Earless Hoichi") and I was under the impression that is what she was going to be reading. I really wanted to hear a Japanese person who is good at reading it  read it.

I went. She read some other story. Something about a deer with one antler.

But, after intermission they had a guy come on and play some shakuhachi, that awesome wooden flute I've always been in love with. So I recorded that.

Not a great recording by any means, but you can get the feel of being in the auditorium. Random coughing and sniffling. He plays three songs and boy did I do a double take when he started that first one! Although, it does lend itself to this kind of instrument.

I just listened last night because I had forgotten what it sounded like. I think the best part is my friend (an older woman) got a tickle in her throat and kept coughing. Half way through (between songs), I remember I had mints in my purse. You can hear me getting them and saying "Douzo" in a whisper and telling her the air is dry isn't it? Or something like that.

Not sure this is relaxing enough for before bed sleepy music. But it is ... interesting.

Stay well, my critters,

Lovely! One of my favorite events I got to attend for my old job was a shakuhachi performance.

I love listening to it, too. Throws me back to my martial arts days when I meditated a lot and was so at one with the universe (joking, but kinda true).

lol, I actually had to skip the first song, it reminded me too much of how my college roommates used to wake me from naps by blasting an out of tune recorder playing that song. But what I heard was lovely!

Don't ever hesitate to send out these soundscape samples. I appreciate listening to them.

Heather, I didn't listen closely, but you might have heard me choke, laugh, or gasp when the song started. I know in my head I screamed, "What the?!" But all the old people in the audience were so swooned by it. That was sweet. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there imagining Jack and Rose. Actually, the reason I didn't put this up earlier is because of that song.

Jeffrey, thank you. I'll look through all my files. So many things I've recorded that I haven't listened to yet. Somewhere I have Shinto traditional music that was very cool. That's been in the back of my head for quite awhile.

I love it. And thanks for using context clues to wade your way through my confusing first sentence.

HAHA I couldn’t tell at first if it was titanic song or lord of the rings and then they broke into the “near far wherever you are!” But and I was like oh yup lol. Awesome

Finally got around to listening to this tonight. What an unusual introduction to an interesting instrument this has been!
