Jaws Watch Along

Ok, just did the watch-along and her3 are my notes…this wasn’t Spielberg’s major first theatrical film, the first was Sugarland Express with Goldie Hawn. Dreyfus was 27 when he filmed this. The author of the book, Peter Benchley, played the reporter on the beach. They used lots of locals as bit players. The shark, Bruce, didn’t work right for most of filming which is why he isn’t seen fully that much. Amityville is on Long Island, NY and Amity Island I’d fictional.

If we do bogart i personally would rather watch treasure of the Sierra Madre. Though both are classics, treasure is a lot more palatable, I think.

I know this was just an offhand joke, but lest anyone take it on earnestly... I'm a big fan of horror movies, and I specifically love the schlocky, so-bad-it's-good b movies of the genre. So I can say with confidence that Sharknado is irredeemable dogshit. No one goes into that thinking they're getting Peak Cinema, but it's reasonable to expect that you'll have a fun time. Instead it is one of the most boring movies I've ever sat through. It's mind-numbingly awful and unworthy of the memes. I am actively mad about the time I wasted on it to this day. And I watched it during Covid lockdown, so it's not like I had a ton going on. A meme movie that I think is actually good: Snakes on a Plane. So deeply stupid, but so fun. And another shark movie which is not a meme but very, very fun is The Meg. I think Jason Statham punches a megalodon in the face at one point? It's awesome.

I'm definitely the polar opposite of Adam. When I was a kid, I devoured older movies. Our local library had free movie rentals and every weekend, my mom would take me to pick something out. It's how I first watched Alien, Star Wars, and Close Encounters. I saw Jaws when I was 8 and it remains one of my favorite movies of all time. It simultaneously started my love for the ocean and my crippling thassalophobia lol. Which was not great because I grew up in a beach town in Massachusetts where we actually did get great white sightings in the summer.

So fun fact I have a connection to the real life events that inspired jaws, the 1916 NJ shark attacks. The first person attacked by the shark happened the town over from my family

Disney+ and Hulu have a new documentary , "Jaws@50" with a lot of great stories and photos on the making of this first summer blockbuster!! :-)

Eileen

You guys would do a fantastic Brody and Hooper duo cosplay

Billy Alston

Richard was Dreyfus was 26 when production began on Jaws.

Adam, I have to ask…does this mean you haven’t watched The Wizard of Oz or Gone With the Wind?

Shennon

So... did you guys know this movie is rated PG?

Shennon

Ohh! Adam, we are the same age and I understand what you're saying about older movies but.... I think you should give some a chance! You liked this one 😉 I think you 2 should watch the Posideon Adventure from 1972 with Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine!

Adam I've seen you react to movies that are older than you are. You did a reaction to Halloween (1978), Also Superman is from 1978 again before you were born.

Zephyr (AD)

Wait, Adam hasn't watched "Casablanca"?! Gotta watch Casablanca. Or some great old school sci-fi like "The Day the Earth Stood Still"?

Ok but literally, 12 Angry Men is still that good. I happened to just watch it for the first time ever last week and it’s *great*.
