Hey Peaches! We're shifting back to Ilya and Shane who aren't really in a good place. Shane learns some things about Ilya that causes him to experiment with just the nicest girl who's definitely not Jennifer Lawerence. Can our boys survive the incredible tension? Can we?

Sorry I’m all over these comments lol but Shane is implied as having autism according to the author and I’ve definitely noticed some hints in the episodes. Re: the restaurant scene - Liquid courage definitely helps create the comfort and social skills for people w autism

& supposedly the cutaways of Ilya in the shower is what Shane was imagining in order to *support* himself while w Rose

The club scene is diabolical. I personally have done something similar. When I found out an ex was at a party I was at I would pull a guy that may or may not be hotter than him and make sure that my ex saw me with the guy. Enjoying my life and having completely over him. With him in my rearview. The last 2ish minutes of the episode are supposed to indicate that even though Shane is with Rose, the only thing he can think about to climax is Ilya. It is one of my favorite scenes of the whole show.

So I’m not sure if you guys caught it, but they said their first names to each other at Ilya’s house and that caused Shane to freak out. Along with everything feeling so domestic. They cannot be boyfriends. This has got to be just hook ups or they will be destroyed. They think. Their entire nine year relationship has been about trying to avoid feelings.

It's actually not explicitly said in the books either that Shane's autistic and it wasn't even Rachel Reid's original intention but after seeing feedback from readers, she's purposely leaned into it and said that Shane doesn't know it but she does.

When Ilya panics, he tends to reach for physical/sexual comfort. The awkward post tuna melt scene was Ilya reaching to Shane for comfort and stepping over the first name boundary. Shane freaks out over 2 things: one, the intimacy of it all which he's learned usually comes right before he's iced out by Ilya and two, he's realizing that he's very very gay and he wants that intimacy and something real with Ilya. Ilya calls him Hollander after when he tries to convince Shane to stay as a sort of oh I messed up moment.

Oh interesting good to know!

Shane's also in a bunch of TV commercials. I think that makes him more recognizable.

as amazing as ep 5 is, the club scene in this ep is my favorite part of this entire series.

Almost 2,5 years has passed between ep. 2 and 4. The opening montage. And in that time Shane and Ilya hook up whenever they're playing against each other. At the end of the montage you can see that they think about each other a lot. At the phone waiting for texts. And Ilya even loses interest in hooking up with girls. Shane's arc in this episode is that he's constantly being reminded about girls. Hayden wants him to date a girl. Shane's mom pushing him about a swedish princess. And Ilya asking him upfront if he likes girls. And Shane clearly lies about liking girls, cause he hasn't yet come to terms with his sexuality. That's what made the conversation on the couch so awkward. Shane being reminded that him and Ilya can't be a thing, cause Ilya likes girls. When they were being intimate on the couch and Ilya called Shane by his first name, Shane completely succumbed to his feelings for Ilya by also calling Ilya by his first name. Shane's now completely in love with Ilya. But post nut clarity hits and Shane panics. Runs away from his feelings for Ilya. Trying to be with a girl, cause that's what you're "supposed" to do. But he clearly only has Ilya on his mind. Ilya's arc for this episode is that he's starting to long for Shane. He stops hooking up with girls. He wants Shane to stay longer. He even cares enough to have Shane's favorite beverage chilled and ready and even wants to make him food. Ilya got a little heartbroken when Shane panicked and ran away. And became jealous when he saw Shane with a girl. But Shane lives rent free in Ilyas head. That's why he didn't bring any girl home from the club. He had to beat his meat by himself thinking of Shane.

While the rivalry was loosely inspired by Ovechkin and Crosby, this isn’t fan fiction. Also, Ovechkin was drafted in 2004 and Crosby in 2005, both first overall. The reason they had their rookie season at the same time is because of the lockout in 2004. Also, both players are still playing; Crosby will be on team Canada for the Olympics, not sure about Ovechkin for Russia.

Speaking of fanfiction, the first book of this series (Game Changer) covers the story of Scott and Kip and it was written as a fanfiction originally between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes!

Well said ! Adding the details that they really only met up in hotel rooms or Shane’s apartment (in the book it’s not where he lives but a separate building) so meeting at Ilyas house and then the offer to spend the night is almost acknowledgment of something more. Also, Ilyas house is the only place Shane was able to get ginger ale in the whole episode!

The ‘energy’ shifted because it’s more intimate but they only know how to communicate through sex. It’s 100% on purpose

Sir, This is A Quark's.

The. ... the energy. Is when you realize you feel for the other person. And ... when you ignore it, you try to prove against it... but you still long for that breath in the suffocation. But you fellas got ep. 5 & 6 real soon, so let's GOooooooooooo!

Ugh. I tried to watch with you guys but you don't seem to get a lot of this show. I also find it really distracting when the one reactor is touching and playing with his facial hair the whole time. I wish you would get a fidget toy that you can play with of screen.

Ilya has given a lot of thought and planning to this sleepover, he has been meticulous, he got in all the supplies for Shane's favourite food, and he is the only one in the whole episode to give Shane ginger ale. But he makes it sound like just a casual last minute thing so as not to freak Shane out. By talking about girls he is trying to get Shane to open up about himself. Then the phone call comes, and while he cannot speak about it in the moment, he doesn't do his usual thing of just going straight for sex, he cuddles Shane instead. Shane is the one who initiates sex, and then it is incredibly intimate, then the names are said, and Shane freaks out. Ilya knows exactly what has freaked out Shane and desperately tries to reground him by repeating Hollander, Hollander. It is beautiful and heartbreaking.

The energy being off seemed intentional. That hookup felt more transactional than any previous. Also, using TATU for that last song was amazing, so many layers. Just the lyrics straight up. But also TATU was made to be lesbian cuz that would be better for marketing, even tho they are straight. Imagine faking sexuality cuz its monetarily beneficial! Not blaming tatu but that angle also lines up with the pressures they feel here about coming out.

Sam

You explained this perfectly

I think Ilya was genuinely trying to connect. He had meal prepped tuna melts, which is a thing he knew that Shane would eat, he bought ginger ale, so it would be at the house for him, he invited him to stay, he woke up from their little nap early and stared at him and then pretended to be asleep. Ilya is already in his feelings. He’s just shit at communication. That conversation was about trying to figure out if I was to drop this thing with Svetlana if this ends, yeah I could go get a girl, but I could also not cause I’m “lazy.” Could it be us maybe in some kind of way? He’s just absolute shit at communicating and Shane is absolute shit at picking up the vibe. And what everyone else says Shane is freaking out internally because this is boyfriend shit that they were doing and he wants it but doesn’t want to admit that he wants it but when he walks out that fucks with Ilya. And the other thing that I don’t think enough people bring up so I’ll say it as a gay lady. Yes, Ilya has been fucking around this whole time with girls, hooking up with other people because they were not monogamous. They didn’t have like a committed relationship. But what he didn’t do is walk out after saying we can’t do this anymore. I’m sorry I can’t do this anymore and immediately get a “legitimate” straight relationship, a person who can come to his games, who he doesn’t have to sneak in the back door, who he’s not as ashamed of. And so Ilya, who spends his whole life in relationships with people who should love him, but are ashamed of him faces it again with Shane. In that club, Ilya is trying to survive heartbreak and Shane is trying to survive the closet.
