New carpet sat under Fury’s feet, the Oval Office newly redecorated in the last month.Official news had run it as simply a seasonal change, a new change for America becoming a new country ‘in the face of overcoming disaster’. It was a pretty choice of words, of course, but it was just that— words.Anyone with a brain knew that it was far more than that and anyone with the requisite clearance knew that with so many figures in the White House recently — several with partially unverified affiliation — that the whole White House had been through a sweep for bugs or other types of espionage equipment.Better carpet than the last two sets at least. Fury had to admit that much. Worse coffee than the Triskelion, though. There was no accounting for taste there but this wasn’t a simple breakfast meeting in the first place.Eighty years old and I still gotta sit still for this. Light filtered through the south windows, a thin October gold that made the entire set-up look far more like a photoshoot than it had any right to be. With the fireplace going strong, it certainly didn’t help that image in the slightest, but it wasn’t Fury’s place to criticize that either. No, the man who had all the critiques was sitting right across from him, rocking a little in his chair while the Vice President of the United States sat almost a dozen feet to his left in a wing chair; manila open on his lap as he didn’t bother to pretend he was still reading it.
Bush had the same report open on his desk and had been reading from it for about ten minutes longer than he needed to, a loose smile on his face while Cheney held a pen the VP wasn’t writing with.Neither had said a word past a simple greeting since Fury had walked in and found a seat.He knew these games. He played these games himself. The general just wasn’t a fan of being on the other side of them.“Alright.” The president finally broke the silence as the man turned a page. “Alright, Nick. So, if I’m reading this correctly… there’s this kid shows up outta nowhere. Got some kinda… strange green space ring and a… a green lantern.” George Bush glanced up at Fury with an eyebrow held high. “Really?”“Yes, sir.”“So, the name’s not just a branding thing?”
